"There's a reason no-one has done this before and we are figuring that out," said Xbox marketing boss Peter Moore.

"If we knew what we were getting into, we might not have done it," he admitted at a recent Xbox event in Amsterdam.

I don't fully understand the issue, other than simply making enough machines. The distribution logistics should be all in place from Xbox. And even if you stagger launches, you still end up having to feed all global territories simultaneously in the end.

any number of factors can cause you grief with new product

Silicon not reaching budgeted yields = less machines you can make

time estimate to manufacture out long = less machines

Plant problems slowing production

lemons off the line at greater than budgeted rate

Any of these problems FUBARs your transport.
you have to transport them from the manufacturing plants, OK if there on the same continent it only takes day. Intercontintenal transport either takes weeks or is quite expensive. 747s are about $40000 an hr. So a china to LA trip of 8hrs = $320000 and it might take 20000 xboxen. So $16 a box. So any problems that put you behind costs you money

If you sell 5 million but 2.5 million happen in two months at the end a year u know that u can produce 420000 a month. that covers you because you can build inventory to back load the year.

If you want to produce even 2.5million in a 1/4 of the time you have problems esp if anything flagged above pops up.

I'm probably the only one that thought they were doing some kind of ice cream promo with 360.
You and me both, man. You and me both. They should totally give everyone who buys a 360 a voucher for a free container of Ben & Jerry's. :D

While what you say is true, doesn't that also imply that they won't be able to meet the targeted speeds/spec that they should be on paper?

I assumed it was some previously unannounced off-road racing game that would make launch day.
