Rogers launches fastest Internet modem speed setting for residential market: 5 megabits per second
TORONTO, May 25 /CNW/ - Rogers Cable today announced the launch of its
new Rogers Hi-Speed Internet Extreme service, with a modem setting of 5
Megabits per second download, and 800kbps upload. This is the fastest
residential internet modem setting available in Rogers areas. The service is
available to Rogers customers throughout Ontario and New Brunswick and will be
launched in Newfoundland later this year.
The monthly fee for its Rogers Hi-Speed Internet Extreme service is
$44.95 per month (unchanged from the current Rogers Hi-Speed Internet service)
and customers will need to purchase a modem from Rogers for $ 99.95 with an
introductory rebate offer of $20.
"Rogers continues to lead the way in providing its customers with the
best products in market, and today's announcement is yet one more. This new
5Mbps residential service will give customers the fastest internet modem
setting available in Rogers areas," said Edward Rogers, President and CEO,
Rogers Cable. "Our research clearly indicates that speed is the most important
factor in choosing a high-speed Internet Service Provider".
With the launch of this new service, Rogers Cable now sets the benchmark
for residential high-speed Internet services. Rogers also offers the following
services:

1. Rogers Hi-Speed Internet (modem setting of 3Mbps download,
384kbps upload) is $44.95 per month (modem rental is part of monthly
subscription fee).

2. Rogers Hi-Speed Internet Lite (modem setting of 128 kbps download,
64kbps upload) is $29.95 per month.

3. Also available for business customers are three Rogers Hi-Speed
Internet Business services, ranging from $34.95 to $79.95 per month.

Yeah, this is just a near duplicate of the Shaw Hi-Speed Xtreme I plan which is 5/1....except that Shaw sells the modem for 60 and the plan is cheaper in certain situations (ie: if you have cable or cable internet services already).

Good to see the both sides of the Cable plan keeping the pace, tho.

Hrm... I have the normal 3Mbps account, but this sounds interesting.
Would the 5Mbps really make that much of a difference? I usually get around 150k on most downloads, though I often hit around 200-300 on the usenet.

Verrrry tempting.

I worry about them flagging my account for excessive bandwidth usage though. Not too long ago they started sending out emails and shutting people down for downloading too much.

Somehow I managed to stay under the radar even though I pull down around 50-60GB per month. I'd probably lose control and hit over 100GB with a faster speed :)

With the new plan, usenet speeds are exactly the same, but they do up your "theoretical" bandwidth per month, so I think you're allowed to hit 50-60GB without the sass. My BT is sure a lot faster, though.
