The rollercoaster that turned the Griswold’s nightmarish vacation into a dream is shuttering its creaky, wooden doors.

Colossus, the iconic staple of Six Flags Magic Mountain, will cease thrilling riders on August 16. Officials didn’t give a formal reason for the shutdown.

"Colossus, the king of wooden coasters, ends its 36-year reign on August 16," Magic Mountain spokesperson Sue Carpenter said in a statement. "Six Flags Magic Mountain will announce exciting future plans for the park we think our guests will love at a later date. In the meantime, don’t miss your last chance to ride Colossus."

The imposing ride has been a theme park beacon since June of 1978, when it was deemed the fastest and tallest wooden coaster in the world. Boasting two drops greater than 100 feet -- the first coaster in the world to try that -- Colossus greets visitors when they pull up to the park, its 4,300 feet of track taking up over ten acres of land.

It’s been a hit in Hollywood, too, most memorably as the final ride taken by the Griswold clan in ‘National Lampoon’s Vacation’ (and less memorably – but no less awesomely – as a backdrop for an epic fight scene in the made-for-TV cult hit “KISS Meets The Phantom of the Park”). Colossus also appeared in episodes of “Knight Rider,” “The A-Team,” and “Wonder Woman.”

It hasn’t always been a smooth ride, however. A mere six months after Colossus opened, a woman died after being ejected from her seat. Colossus was shut down and overhauled with new height and weight restrictions, though for years safety concerns lingered.

August 16th will be one hell of a dark day for ride geeks...

Aww what is this? That sucks.

I remember they put the cars on backwards for Halloween. It was a lot of fun - until it stopped. Then the bar or something would smack you right in the nuts.

I got to ride this coaster years ago the one time I went to magic mountain. Hopefully after its torn down, a newer version of Colossus will open up in its place. Six flags San Antonio had to do the same thing with the aging "Rattler" a year or two ago, and the new Rattler definitely has most of the elements of the original, but it feels new (and more smooth so no whiplash ).

Wooden rollercoasters as we knew them pre 2000 are being torn down one by one for newer steel/wooden hybrids that will last longer and will be easier to maintain.

I feel as if I was part of the "problem" as to why it shut down. A month or so back, I had gone to Magic Mountain with my husband and two friends. My husband and I road in the front cart and during the time we were riding it, it was going backwards. Not a pleasant experience by the way, I do NOT recommend it!

Anyway, so I'm happy as a clam, having fun and I feel myself start to float off the ride. Generally this is intended I would presume, but when my husband reached over and slammed the restraint down so I wouldn't go flying off, I thought something was just a tad bit off. Afterwards he told me he saw me flying out of my seat and pushed the bar down in hopes I wouldn't be ripped away.

I wasn't too phased by this since I was having the best time of my life that day. So I casually go over to the attendant and mention that my restraint bar came loose during the ride and that my husband had to make sure I didn't fly out. Guy said I needed to tell him which one, so I pointed in the direction of the car, but that wasn't good enough, I had to go and basically stand next to the seat I was in. After that I left, but I suspect I spoiled the riding fun for others with my safety concern.

Just glad that they took my concern seriously at the time and didn't just ignore me.
