[Rolling Stone] How 'Mafia 3' Video Game Scored Kick-Ass Sixties Soundtrack

Mafia doing what GTAdont.

Mafia 1 and 2 soundtracks were great too. Mafia 1's was simple but damn so good era licensed music.

NumberTwo

Paper or plastic?
I knew the soundtrack for this game was going to be incredible but actually seeing the tracklist I'm still floored. I can't wait to buy the soundtrack. I hope it includes all the songs.

Soundtrack is fucking amazing

I wonder if the game is going to be like real life where Proud Mary plays on the radio rougly every 15 minutes

I would have loved to see "Gimme Shelter" but the game takes place too early for it I believe

This is imo a faaaaaaar better soundtrack then GTA V's. Though I'm probably biased since I'm a huge fan of classic rock over modern hip hop and things.

I wish they got Frijid Pink's version of House of the Rising Sun though, imo it's better then the Animals, also the more popular version internationally.

edit - Also I have to say, yay to ""Li'l Red Riding Hood" by Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs," I love that song.

I still can't believe how awesome this soundtrack is. Like they went all out - the number of tracks, the incredible licenses, holy goodness.

This is my most anticipated game in forever!

Vice City and San Andreas were 12 years ago.

That's a long fucking time bro.

Yeah, the last time GTA was set during a time period.....

You say GTAdont as like Rockstar has never had great soundtracks before.

Would you like them to have a pure 60's soundtrack for a game that takes place during the present day?

There's like half of creedence discography in there.
Not a huge variety in terms of artists but man, that's soundtrack of the forever.

Really?!

That was the first time I heard it, and hrm.. it must be an acquired taste or maybe i'm just used to hearing The Animals version. Very different in tone.

Yea, I like it better cause it's a harder rock version with a psychedelic vibe to it whereas the animals version is a bit more tamer/by the books. I always felt the Frijid Pink version had more "soul" put into it.

The break at 3:04 into the song is what really makes it better imo.

Somehow missed out on Mafia 2 at launch, and bought a GOTY edition a year later. One of my best purchases in the previous generation.

Gears 4 releases pretty close to this, so I guess reviews will decide whether I get it day one, or not.

Well...I've never played a Mafia game before, but I guess this'll be the first one.

Awesome stuff!

Don't know how Mafia 2 aged, but I'd recommend playing it, it's a really good game. The only weird thing is, that the open world acts rather as a hub than a sandbox like in GTA.

Amazing selection of tracks going to spend way too much time idling in the car before leaving to start the next mission. Hoping a couple of tracks are cued to come on during big game events

BTW, The Wrap posted two tracks from Mafia 3's OST.

The original score for “Mafia 3” comes from composers Jesse Harlin and Jim Bonney.

“‘Mafia 3”s score was an amazing experiment in how to take traditional blues instruments — upright bass, upright piano, guitar, dobro — and make them feel cinematic,” Harlin said. “How do you take a song-based structure, throw out the use of lyrics, and still retain the ability to tell interactive stories?”

“As if that wasn’t enough,” Harlin continued, “I decided to try and incorporate something that hasn’t been used in game scores before and hired step dancers from the Tennessee State University competitive step team to record a bunch of body percussion for soundtrack. There are very few great sounding recordings of step dancing on YouTube; it’s much more of a live performance medium. So we had to figure out how to even go about recording it, then perfect it, then incorporate it into the score. From top to bottom, ‘Mafia 3”s score was one rooted in pushing myself creatively to give the game a signature sound.”

Vice City may have been topped. I know for certain I'll be spending a lot of my time just listening to these tunes. I hope the game is just as good.

Touches like this are so important when you are doing time piece games or even movies. Adds so much to have the proper sounds of the era. Was a huge part of what made Vice City so memorable.

Fantastic to see them go so in on the music of the era

I cannot find a 1967 version of Runaway by Del Shannon I only found a version by the Small Faces. Does somebody know which version is meant?

It's called Runaway 67, done in a different tempo

Thank you very much!

God I am so thankful for this soundtrack already. It is the same as it was with Mafia 1 and 2 which made me to a good part interested in that old music and my love for vinyl as well. Currently I am making a playlist with all the songs and it is so much fun to discover old music history. For example I did not know that the animals did a cover of "Paint it black". Interesting.

I guess that will make the game worth anyway. Cruising around the city, listening to this soundtrack. I am really looking forward to it.

Lol I am wondering if we will get the original 17 minute version of in a gadda da vida

"You Belong To Me" by The Misfits? Wtf

That's a cover released in 2003 in the shittiest era of the band. Give me a break

Rest of the soundtrack looks great

I started scrolling and... wasn't expecting such a long list. I am very happy though!

This is not the kind of game I want to hear music looping every hour, so this is fantastic news.

Weird. Definitely the first time I got goosebumps looking at the track list for a game.

Also the first time I kind of resigned to buy a game because of its soundtrack. Other than Beatles Rockband I suppose.

ooohh, nice.

tbh i don't know much about 60s music, even though i enjoy it. i recognize only a fraction of those songs. so the soundtrack is likely to have dozens of songs i have never heard but will really like. that alone is almost enough reason to buy the game heh. (also it looks awesome).

i kinda can't stand CCR though, not because they suck or anything, but because back in 98 or 99 when me and my friends were skateboarding in our indoor park, we only had a few cds there, so a CCR best of collection was often in rotation.. and because the equipment was shit, songs often got stuck on repeat... i swear we listened to Fortunate Son 30-40 times in a row, on many days. still don't want to listen to it.

Green River is a great swamp jam that'll fit great in the game. Also very happy they're using my favorite Sam Cooke tracks. Can't wait to hear Another Saturday Night while driving around.

Amazing. Mafia III sounds better every time I see something new about it. Really hoping it all comes together.

Well as i been saying for yeeeeears if someone would make a quality vietnam war shooter that it would have all the mood and soul needed to make one kick ass game, music being one of the reasons as the 60's is the era with the best music of any time..

Now, if someone would just put in some quality money and talent into make a vietnam game...it would be lovely.

Hate to say it, but the only reason people know house of the rising sun in these parts is because of five finger death punch

It's also the most played version on spotify
