Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.

Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is a complete 3D remake of the original Romancing SaGa 2, first released in 1993 in Japan.

Discover or re-discover the epic story of the wars fought between the imperial line of Varennes and the Seven Heroes of ancient myth, as well as all the unique and ground-breaking mechanics from the SaGa franchise, such as “Glimmers” and “Formations”.

This remake re-works the battle and character growth systems and adds in numerous new features, such as difficulty selection, Japanese and English voice acting, both original and rearranged music and much more! Last but not least, the expansive world of Romancing SaGa 2 and its various characters, originally depicted using 2D pixel graphics, has been fully updated to gorgeous 3D.

I bought a sex doll, but I keep it inflated 100% of the time and use it like a regular wife
Is this a good starting point to get into the Saga games? My other alternatives are Saga 3, Frontier and Frontier 2 which looks amazing btw.

This game (at least from the demo) was incredibly accessible. This series is similar to Final Fantasy, in that the games aren't connected at all story-wise and just share some elements. This game also seems far less convoluted than the more recent entries (Scarlet Grace and Emerald Beyond), and the game seems to give you good tutorials to let you know what's going on, unlike the original SNES game.

There's a demo on all platforms, and the progress from the demo carries over to the full game, if you wanna check it out yourself before committing.

They’re all totally independent (like FF series) so you can start wherever. Saga Frontier 1 is probably my favorite but it seems like Romancing Saga 2 is the one Japanese gamers are most nostalgic for.

And BTW when you say Saga 3, do you mean Romancing Saga 3? Those are 2 different games (this series has the most confusing names ever).

Saga 1-3 were released on Gameboy (released in the US as Final Fantasy Legend 1-3)

Romancing Saga 1-3 were on SNES. RS1 was remade as Minstrel Song for PS2

Saga Frontier 1&2 were on PlayStation

Very nice to know that the game is accessible. My first game in this series was Romancing Saga 3 and that one was a bit hard to get into, at least for me back when I tried it. I'll give the demo a go, thanks!

Yeah I know. I was referring more to the accessibility of the game, since I've always heard those are very complicated games.

I was referring to the remake of Romancing Saga 3 that's available on Steam. Didn't know Saga 3 was a different game, man that's confusing. :goog_relieved:

How did you spell SaGa two different ways in the thread title 🤔

Anyway, I plan to play this at some point. I still hope for a SaGa Frontier 3 game someday.

Ahh yeah for sure this RS2 remake seems to be a lot more accessible based on the demo.

E.g. they give you an indication of which skills are most likely to spark new skills when using them. You can see your magic/weapon proficiency experience after battle (either this stuff was hidden in the original, or it was random, not sure). And it gives you quest markers instead of making you figure out where to go (often by trial and error), for better or worse.

Just started the demo and I'm enjoying it. The game immediately seems more engaging than most other RPGs I've played recently. Not sure why, could be that old school charm.

PC port seems pretty good. Required some tweaks to get rid of motion blur, sharpen TAA and fix the VERT- scaling on ultrawide. Heard it runs really well on Steam Deck, which I have yet to try.

I usually write RPGs with battle formations/grids off, but I'm going to give this entire demo a shot. Have a feeling I'll buy this game really soon, if not eventually.

Game is so good, played like 4 hours today. I'm a huge fan of the original, so I'm a bit biased, but I'm loving this.

Tons of freedom, multiple paths to do the same mission. Great progression system that reminds me of Final Fantasy II.

Also, straight up harem simulator with hot anime chicks.

Make sure you get all those done in time for DQ3 remake in a few weeks.
Word. I'm like 70% through Metaphor, Ys Nordics hits tomorrow, Trails through Daybreak got put on pause after a week, and I still have Trials of Mana staring at me through its shrink wrap.

Don't forget to squeeze in Mario & Luigi: Brothership, made by Acquire!

I'm about halfway through. Really enjoying this, haven't played the original in quite a long time, so this feels a lot more fresh to me. I skipped the re-release. However, this definitely feels like an old school JRPG - lots of battles (though they can be seen now and potentially avoided), lots of fetch-style quests, and a complicated leveling system.

It honestly feels refreshing after Metaphor, having a story that leaves a lot to your imagination. You mean I don’t have to listen to each character give a 5 minute monologue before every boss battle? I can just go explore this sewer and figure out WTF it is for myself without my party breaking out into conversation and telling me what I need to do? WOW!

The battles do get a bit exhausting though. I think it’s made more bearable because you’re constantly sparking new abilities and leveling up all these different skills.

The battle system definitely starts off slowly, but ramps up at a good pace as you learn new abilities and level up weapon types. You eventually unlock better skills that let you hit multiple enemies at once and do big damage, as long as you have the right weapon/weakness combo. Fights where you don't have the right type of weapon, or have run out BP and are stuck using just basic attacks, those become a huge slog even later on.

Dungeons in this game are cool because they start becoming a weird balancing act of "how far into this dungeon can I get before I run out of BP for damage spells and healing?". The items to recover BP are pretty expensive / rare, which is great. And with permadeath being a thing in this game, the stakes are actually pretty high.

And while this game does have the modern trappings of quest markers for everything, there are actually a lot of zones you can't access without exploring for different exits that aren't exactly marked on your map. This makes a pretty good balance of old school adventuring with modern QoL features that I'm enjoying a lot.

This is gonna be my first Romancing SaGa game. Should get the copy in a few days, let's see how it goes!

Is this the first time that Tomomi Kobayashi's artworks have been so well rendered in a full 3D game? I have that impression anyway.

Edit: Ah, my bad, it's Yoshiro Ambe the chara-designer.

The demo is convincing me and I had absolutely no desire for this game when they released the first trailer. A very pleasant surprise.

Just hit the 30-hour mark, and finally got to the "final" era.

I love how in old school JRPGs, the games would typically give you the ability to grind as much as you wanted to, and would often give you more and more better stuff to grind on / against for as long as you're up for it. Case in point, this game's class / ability system is like that. In addition to the eight or nine starting classes, I think I've unlocked about 10-12 additional ones (some that even have M and F ability variants) that make for some wonderful skill and party compositions. Honestly, even though I'm near the end of the game now, I could probably spend another 20–30 hours grinding out abilities as I've largely ignored about half of the classes I've unlocked.

This game continues to be great.

Is GMG still the best price on this for Steam at 20% off? I totally forgot this was out already. This year is insane for JRPGs.

Finished with Veilguard. Gonna start this next.

Never played a Romancing SaGa game before, let's see how this goes.

The initial intro and art is extremely modern Dragon Quest-y, didn't realize this was going to be such a tropey JRPG.

edit:

Why yes, I would love to play as the lady with her tits falling out while receiving a golden shower.

edit 2:

Modern JRPG's have spoiled me a bit. I wish there was an option to 'auto battle' so the smaller fights can be done quicker with the CPU auto attacking on my behalf.
