As one of games media’s self-described SaGa Sickos, I had one question on my mind coming into Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven. Could a SaGa be rebuilt, explicitly for approachability, and still feel like SaGa? Or would sanding it down and making it friendlier turn it into a less daring and bold RPG that’s harder to distinguish from Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest? While some parts did have me feeling a little curmudgeonly, at the end of the day the answer is yes. Romancing SaGa 2’s remake is a fulfilling journey, giving fans of the original plenty to sink their teeth into, while simultaneously offering something that’s a lot more palatable for curious parties to finally set their fears aside and try something new. If it clicks, though, I implore you to dive into the deep end afterwards. Don't sleep on SaGa!

Only a somewhat thin SNES-style story holds backthe game slightly, and even that is a minor complaint. In a year filled with incredibly strong RPGs, Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven might still be one of the best.

Yeah, I'm in the same boat as you. I'll probably have to wait until early next year to play it, but I'm 100% getting this one.

Picking this up on the Switch and will balance it between Ys X on the PC. Will hopefully finish Ys by the time Dragon Quest III comes out. I'm also swimming in great JRPGs, but decided to backburner Metaphor so that I could squeeze everything else in this year.

Really looking forward to this, I watched a video from Nintendo World Report that really got me excited. The scores aren't too far off from what I figured, Saga games always seem to be pretty divided with opinions, but this one looks great if you know what to expect from the series. I will probably hold off playing this until after Y's X as I figure this will be the longer of the two games, but I am pumped to get into it!

I don't have the time for Metaphor, right now precisely because it is so damn long and dense, so this should be my seasonal JRPG.

From what I read it seems like characters have little personality, and the story is quite lean. Not what I look for in long modern JRPGs usually.

It's a non-linear game where, after the introduction sequence, you are taking control of different characters across the generations to fight the Seven Heroes. In that respect, it's almost rogue-lite in a sense.

Given that premise, only the antagonists (or NPCs) can have much in terms of personality, because they are a constant while almost all of your controllable characters may vary from time to time.

I wouldn't say the story itself is that absent. It isn't a dense narrative, but the different regions have their own local quests and there is an overarching structure to what you are doing.

Also don't forget the last remnant, it started life as a saga game then morphed in to something else entirely so it has some connections to the series (which only make sense after you've played a few games in the saga series).
