this is oddly similar to an experience i had last year. i live in an apartment building. i was coming home from work and entered through a locked gate which requires a card. after going in, i heard someone on the other side, and somebody was saying they didn't have their key, and asked me to let them in. i am an optimistic person so i turned around and let him in the gate. he proceeded to follow me to the side door and as i tried to enter, he slammed the door shut, put his hand in his pocket to mimic holding a gun, and roughed me up, shoving me to the ground and stealing my wallet.
the thing is, this was 5 o'clock in the afternoon, and in a pretty nice part of town. imo it was a kid who saw an opportunity and decided to act stupidly. they ID'd him from security footage and eventually police arrested him trying similar shit on the other side of town. but it really scared me and to this day i don't hold the door for ANYBODY. you never know who is a murderer, or who is just a jerk having a bad day. plus if i let someone bad in, there is a possibility they might not hurt me, but will hurt someone else i live with. you have to be careful.
OP thank god you are safe. i know there is a desire to be nice and open minded, but for your HOME, safety first.
