FFVII materia system is king.

Admittedly, I haven't played many RPG's, but FFVII's materia system is my gold standard. The way that magic could be improved by slotting it with intuitive supports was simple, effective, and allowed for fun customization that never got bogged down by an over-reliance on labyrinthian menus. I have yet to interact with a system that has felt as approachable or fun to play with as FFVII's materia.

Nothing has ever matched Persona 2: Eternal Punishment as far as I'm concerned.
