RPG series to play

RevenantKioku

PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS oh god i am drowning in them
So as I'm going through DQVIII, I realize, woo - I've beaten all FF games and soon all DQ games, main series mind you. Thing is, I'm blanking on any other big ass series. Sure, I've got Suikoden IV, DDS2 and Shadow Hearts From the New World to tackle through, but I think I need another series to jump on. There was something truly great about watching the FF and DQ series progress on their different paths.
So anyways, suggest!

How are the Wizardry games that Japan got, anyway?

Breath of Fire? dunno you didn't mention it.

also if you like SRPGs

Fire Emblem

Growlanser but the best Growlanser games are Japan only at the moment (and probably will stay that way). =/

There's more than 3 of them? I have the JPN PSX game and then Generations.

Good thing Fire Emblem was mentioned in the first reply.

Fire Emble. Any of them.

Stop wasting time. GO!

Console? PC?

Console! Blessed be that I'm a Mac user!

FFIV Advance and DQVIII come before anything else. Plus, I'm stuck in the first US release GBA Fire Emblem. Damn snow maps.

4 currently released, and a 5th game on the way. Growlanser 1 and 4 (and are the two best games in the series thus far) never got released in America and probably never will now that WD's gone. The only possible way GL1 might make it over to America is if it gets a PSP port.

If you have a Cube, and you want something lighthearted and different, you might want to check out Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. It's got a lot of fanservice moments, and the story is pretty simple, but the combat's fun, the music's spectacular, and the graphics are very well-done given the style chosen. It's not quite as kidzy as it looks, but it's still pretty lighthearted. It was one of my favorite games last year.

The problem with these threads is people already suggest stuff I've got, and played! I guess I'm a little vague though. PM2 was fucking tight though.
I need obscure!

Gotcha, I won't be much help to you then. Glad you enjoyed PM though, it did rock.

I guess you've played through Valkyrie Profile? I know it's not strict RPG, but I couldn't help but think of it with all the news lately. I haven't played it through, but I intend to very soon. I know it's not super-obscure, but it is semi-rare, or appears to be.

Grandia.

It's like Final Fantasy and Lunar COMBINED! The battle system, anyway.

But skip Grandia Xtreme. It's a dungeon crawl with little in the way of plot and personalities that proves too much of a good thing (Grandia's battle system) is a bad thing.

Played it through on the middle ranking, got, probably one of the not so great endings. Fantastic game though.

Brandon - Wizardry? I'm hunting high and low for that game, but all I'm stumbling across are the Japanese games of recent years.

King's Field, the Ancient City

I'm a bastard for even suggesting it

Wizardry is good fun, but you won't pry my copy from these paws

Check out the GC version. There's an easy mode, and it's so much better.

The Sacred Stones is the easiest of all of them. There's a place you can visit over and over to level your guys like crazy.

It's the PC Wizardry games, but with an added dose of Japanese SHYSTEMS and other zaniness (lol@party friend-o-meter)

Mostly, it's a 'classic' (that means old) hardcore dungeon romp. Reasonably challenging, and fun in a kick the door down, bash the monster, gain the level sort of way (rather more complex than that, but you get the idea)

grandia 1 and 2, 3's about to come out and it looks great (skip X, heard it's aweful). kotor 1 and 2. shin megami tensai: nocture isn't related to Digital Devil Saga 1/2 but they share a similiar style and monsters. hmmm, guess they're not too many huge serious other than FF and DQ. Oh, +1 to Fire Emblem respect.

The game is fucking hard to find. I've been looking for months and months even for a used copy in local stores (and we have a lot of game stores). I may have to resort to ebay.

The PS2 Wizardry (only the first came out in the US, I believe it has a sequel in Japan), is fucking brilliant, and one of my favorite GAMES (not just RPGs) on the PS2.

Brutally ironic how Wizardry 8(PC) and Tales of the Forsaken Land(PS2) both released within just a month of each other back in late 2001.

Of course most everyone will remember that week of December for the 'early' launch of FFX(Last minute schedule change from the previously expected Jan. ship date). Poor Wizardry just got bullied out of retail share.

I hope some of you can find a copy, game is a pretty kickass dungeon crawl.

YES. WIZARDRY. I haven't played the entire series*, but the PS2 one is excellent. The art's beautiful, the combat's fun and challenging, and it has this great, creepy atmosphere. Wiz8's the only other one I've played, but it had too many colors, which turned me off. Usually I'm all for rainbows everywhere, but I've got a big hardon for dank, depressing RPGs. Looks like the recent Japanese Wizardry's got all colorful, too. Bummed me out, but I guess it doesn't matter since they're never coming here.

*I tried to earlier this year, but, uh, I couldn't find anyplace to download the disk images from. And I wasn't really interested in paying for 20 year old PC software that probably doesn't work. So my Wizardry orgy never got off the ground. Anyone know if the console ports are any good?

I got mine from a Gamecrazy for $22 - the guy at the counter was like, NOOOO! and I said, oh, you wanted to buy it? He said, actually, he traded it in because his wife forced him to, and he didn't think anybody would want to buy it.. he was hoping he would be able to get it back at some point. :lol I felt really bad for him, but he wished me the best.

That PS2 Wizardry looks really cool and it's a freaking TRAGEDY that I have never even HEARD of it before this thread. BOLO IS NOT PLEASED

Play Wild ARMs and Breath of Fire games. Suikoden rocks pretty hard too. Combined and counting WA:ACF and Suiko Tactics, that's 14 possible games to play. 15 when WA4 hits.

First, go for Fire Emblem then you can check out Suidoken, Lufia and Phantasy Star.

That was possible in the first Advance FE too, it was just available in The Sacred Stones earlier.

Having played Grandia and finding it sorta meh (although the battle system was fun) your mileage my vary.

I'd say Chrono, though you'd might ignore my post since most of the GAFFers disliked chrono cross (it has it flaws I agree.. the biggest one being the characters but GAF dislikes it because they compare it with Chrono Trigger.. just don't compare it with Trigger and you'll be fine)

I just like the chrono trigger references in chrono cross.

I agree. As I was playing CC I found myself wondering why it was nothing like CT. Once I started treating it not as a sequel, but as its own game, I saw how great it is. And it is an amazing game.

Even if the ending sucks.
