RPGs with the best plot/characters ?

Jeez. Lotta love for KOTOR. I thought it had a pretty weak ending myself, kind of like Return of the Jedi. But I loved playing through it though. Final Fantasy games to me really hit the spot. FFX was great imo, so obviously we wouldn't see eye to eye there. IX was very likeable as well and had a great story. Could never get into VIII though. Didn't like anything at the start of that game. Hopefully XII rocks though. Been awhile since X and 1 good FF game in a generation isn't enough.

Ultima IV, VI, and VII
Betrayal at Krondor
Albion
Baldurs Gate 1 & 2
Fallout 1 & 2
Planescape Torment

Console stuff:

Final Fantasy IV
Phantasy Star 2
Paper Mario

I am seeing a lot of BOF3 love...It's kinda shocking after the latest threads (never played it, don't know anything about BOF series in general). I would like to know your opinions :)

WHat do you think of BoF4?

I didn't like 4. The Gene combinations in 3 was better. I liked 3's characters (Scias rules though) and I like how you start out as a child and grow up. I also thought the music, setting and overall story was better. I played 3 probably 4 or 5 times while only playing 4 once.

I loved it.. it's one of the few PS1 games that I can still pick up and play. It's so charming, because of these little details.. like sentences without periods at the end. You wouldn't think that would be a big deal, but to me, at least, it produces an unusual effect. The speech seems more natural, but also more "acted." I was charmed by the story from beginning to end, and there are a lot of great moments that I can still remember five years later. In fact, I feel like playing it again..

The DQ games have always had awesome stories... not the deepest/most sophisticated but probably the most well-told. Phantasy Star series has a great mythos surrounding it, with #2 being the pinnacle game for storytelling in the series. I liked Xenogears story a lot, there was just so much going on it was overwhelming...

As far as plot/characters go...

Phantasy Star II and IV
Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy VII, VIII, and X
Skies of Arcadia Legends
Grandia I and II

I'd say that Earthbound Zero (which I'm playing now. I never played the SNES game) has an interesting setup, even though the plot and characters are somewhat...lethargic?

Final Fantasy VI, VIII, IX (no need to comment on FFX...I felt the pain...)

How are you going to have a characters/story topic and include FF games, yet not include Final Fantasy 4. best story and (at least as good, if not better than VI) characters in the series.

*listens to Saturn Valley Theme from Earthbound* :D

Best badguy in the world, one of the most epic battles I've ever seen in a 2D RPG, and he wasn't even the final boss :lol

In terms of the most developed character arcs, I'd have to go with FFVI; its characters definitely left the most lasting impression on me. I haven't really been enamored with any of the RPG plots I've played through, but plots are a tougher sell to me than characterization, emotional content, general atmosphere/feel, etc...

The Baldurs Gate Saga
Fallout 1
Planescape: Torment
Everquest -especially the Kunark expansion

Final Fantasy IV
Final Fantasy VI
Chrono Trigger
Earthbound

Shadow Hearts
Shadow Hearts Covenant
Skies of Arcadia (the characters)
.hack series is really cool IMO
Digital Devil Saga

Seems that like the Gymnopedies and Elliot Carter my esteemed college Sonarrat and I disagree again. I played it, and found nothing all that extraordinary or charming about it. No sir. I didn't like.
