Because of Adult Swim's cruel April Fool's joke and the flood of nostalgia I got from watching those great shows I decided to dig up the DVD I bought years ago and finally rewatch Outlaw Star. The show originally aired when I was like in 5th grade and I barely remembered anything, just that the gun shot magic, and there was an episode that didn't air because of boobs. I watched the whole series in English and the dubbing wasn't bad at all.

I really enjoyed it and I thought it wouldn't hold up. I mean it moves a bit slowly, but I still enjoyed every episode. It's not the greatest or whatever, but I just wanted to make a thread about it. Strange how one block of TV can affect someone so much.

What did everybody else think about this show?

Also the first ED is amazing and I love when Melfina sings the song in English.

Read the wiki and I just found this out :(

Morning Star Studio made preliminary plans to create a direct sequel original video animation (OVA) series to Outlaw Star, but production never began.

Also I see there is a spinoff, is that any good?

The OP is amazing. I feel sad for the people that never got to see it when watching it on Toonami.

I was lucky to catch the first episode when it aired on Toonami years ago, and I instantly liked it. Great series with fun characters. I'll always remember the voice that asks, "What does thy desire?" That is from Outlaw Star... right?

Always thought about buying this just to be able to finally watch a non-Cartoon Network version (I remember reading Kyle Pope's edit list). Really worth $40?

Yeah they keep saying it in the last episode.

Perfect timing for this. Just started watching this a few days ago and I'm halfway through. So far every episode is an enjoyable ride.

Agreed. I love the opening. It isn't particularly artistic or well animated, but it gets me pumped to watch the show. When I was a kid, the Toonami in my town never actually played the openings to any of its shows. But I had a Gundam Wing VHS that had a preview for it and played the song and I was pissed that I never got to actually see it until I was in college.

Honestly, this is one of the most underrated shows in anime. Oh it's well regarded, but it doesn't pop up enough in discussions about classics or favorites enough. It's pure, distilled fun. When I think of anime that are just a blast to watch, I think Outlaw Star.

Just like Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star also got a much-improved remastered release on region 2 DVD that Bandai never bothered to bring over. Very disappointing, because it's such a fun show.

Outlaw Star is like Bebop's retarded juvenile little brother. A shame because the animation and designs were great for the most part. Unfortunately they had to ruin with the typical anime BS of hyperactive cat girls and whatever other shit gives fat nerds their boners these days.

Great anime. In my top 5 actually.

Gene is a bad ass dude.

I named my GamerTag/PSN ID after the show and took the Outlaw part. ;)

A show from the days when anime was made with manly sensibilities, instead of the pedobait that now gets churned out.

I always really loved the idea of Caster Shells. There is just something awesome about a magic spell packed into a bullet.

I've had this show in my collection for a while.
I hug the DVD box sometimes.
Still a great OP after all these years. One of my favs.
I love shows in this genre in general.

Angel Links blows, and it is only barely related to Outlaw Star from what I remember.

Yeah. There's an Outlaw Star episode where two characters from Angel Links show up (Dragon Guy and Blonde Chick, Duuz was the dragon guy but I forget the other one's name) and do some stuff. It's almost like a backdoor pilot you'd see in a sitcom or something.

Anyway, they're in Angel Links, but the main character is some chick with huge boobs (it's pretty much her main character trait). Fred from OS shows up at the beginning of the first episode for like a second, but that's all the real connections.

I just saw the last two episodes last night on channel MNET which airs every Wednesday. By the way, the nude episode was shown too.

I tried rewatching this a couple years back and it didn't really hold up. Spotty animation was the biggest problem, especially in the second half.

I just saw the last two episodes last night on channel MNET which airs every Wednesday evening by the way. The series should be going back to episode 1 again next week. They showed the "booby" episode too!

Imagine my surprise seeing that hot springs episode at 13 when I got the dvd's. Love that episode.

I love how if you only ever watched Toonami's run, you'd never see how Gene got those bullets.
It was a wtf moment for me.

It was okay animation and setting were great storyline was cliched. I still prefer Cowboy Bebop of course but I wouldn't mind seeing a sequel.

I think it holds up pretty well.

It is really cool going back and watching the first episode to see how tightly it was planned from the beginning.

The opening song and the 2nd song in the ending credits are SOOOOOOOOOOOO good. Also I really enjoyed the show, one of my all-time favourites.

What did y'all think of grappler combat? I always thought it was weird, and still do. Here's a crazy awesome spaceship... with arms!

An amazing show with some really fun ideas. I liked the spectrum of content it covered, the likeable cast, and some of the music is incredible. Breeze gets me every time.

I love revisiting this series, and I wish they had made a second season... : (

Was a really fun show. There wasn't too much character or story depth there outside some pretty standard archetypes, but Gene was a likable lead and the world was really creative. Rare balance between magic and space western that's actually interesting.

It's not nearly as offensive as you're making it out to be.

I enjoyed Outlaw Star because it was one of the few series I didn't mind watching with a dub, the English VAs ranged from passable to pretty damn good.

Slightly off topic, Green Legend Ran is in my opinion one of the best when it comes to English Dub

I remember watching almost this whole series with my brother every night when we were younger on vacation in Florida once. I would love to watch it again. I remember trying to see if a Blu-ray existed or was in the works a couple months ago but I never found anything.

Ha! I was fascinated by Outlaw Star, to the point that I still name my wireless networks Gilliam II. But I never actually finished the series. I think i got the first two DVD volumes or something but could never find the last one while I was still interested.

How disappointed would I be going back to finish it now?

I always liked this one a bit more. Tsuki No Ie
Best pair of EDs in an anime go to Outlaw Star.

It gets really unfairly compared to Cowboy Bebop, which is stupid because they're very differently-styled shows. OS owns up to the fact that it's very action and fantasy-inspired, whereas CB was always supposed to be noir.

Caster shells and the Kei Pirates' tao magic were brilliant, though. As were grappler ships. The OST for the show was great...I really need to marathon my boxset one day.
