RTTP: Outlaw Star!

Yeah, I always thought it unfair to compare Outlaw Star to Bebop, simply because the latter is one of the best anime ever produced, period. OS is just a fun romp in space, nothing wrong with that.

Ha! I was fascinated by Outlaw Star, to the point that I still name my wireless networks Gilliam II. But I never actually finished the series. I think i got the first two DVD volumes or something but could never find the last one while I was still interested.

How disappointed would I be going back to finish it now?

I name mine the Galactic Leyline

Best pair of EDs in an anime got to Outlaw Star.

It really gets unfairly compared to Cowboy Bebop, which is stupid because they're very differently-styled shows. OS owns up to the fact that it's very action and fantasy-inspired, whereas CB was always supposed to be noir.

Caster shells and the Kei Pirates' tao magic were brilliant, though. As were grappler ships. The OST for the show was great...I really need to marathon my boxset one day.

I think I read somewhere once that there are a lot of similarities between Outlaw star and Firefly.

Ahh here it is http://www.geekosystem.com/18-things-didnt-know-firefly/

There'll always be some comparison because both shows are contemporaries of each other, made by Sunrise, brought over by Bandai Entertainment, dubbed by the same company and feature outlaws in outer space. But they're so different thematically that there isn't much need to say one's better or worse than the other. Both shows accomplish what they set out to do, as far as I'm concerned.

I bought the first volume of Outlaw Star when it came out on DVD but didn't like it enough to keep watching after that. It must have been at least 10 years ago or more, but to this day I still remember a scene where the hero is sleeping in a bed, and this weird robotic sidekick thing which is composed of multiple separate cylindrical canisters is trying to wake him up, hopping up and down on the bed and yelling at him earnestly. He rolls over on his side and the canisters go flying. For some reason this was so hilarious to me I rewound it a bunch of times.

Or did I dream that. Now I wanna watch it again.

Hah you didn't dream that. it happened in the show.

When Melfina started singing (warning naked Melfina so NSFW I guess) at the beginning of the episode that Toonami played on Saturday, it was so weird. I remembered most of the lyrics yet haven't heard the song sice I first saw it forever ago. So crazy.

The show has a pretty slow start, but once it breaks into its regular format, it gets really good.

Also, because I didn't post the link earlier:
Outlaw Star - Breeze

And some others-
Outlaw Star - Flight (possibly NSFW imagery in video)

Outlaw Star - Asiatic (possibly NSFW imagery in video)

Outlaw Star - Crash

Outlaw Star - Change (possibly NSFW imagery in video)

Outlaw Star - Operation (possibly NSFW imagery in video)

I bought both of the soundtracks a while back, and I still love giving them a listen. Some are much easier to listen to than others, but still solid. Just don't listen to that freaking "Another Day" song... Ugh.

edit: I think the reason I love Outlaw Star so much is because it pretty much touched on just about every single scifi-fantasy trope in the run of the series that was around in the 90s anime scene. I was also a big fan of PSO, and this was a natural compliment to it. At least, at the time.
It was a perfect storm of all of the things I loved, for better or for worse, in the genre. Still love it.

edit 2: Which did you all prefer- the episode with the mind control cactus and giant bug, or the one with the mouse themed bomber/terrorist? : D

Agreed. I love the opening. It isn't particularly artistic or well animated, but it gets me pumped to watch the show. When I was a kid, the Toonami in my town never actually played the openings to any of its shows. But I had a Gundam Wing VHS that had a preview for it and played the song and I was pissed that I never got to actually see it until I was in college.

Honestly, this is one of the most underrated shows in anime. Oh it's well regarded, but it doesn't pop up enough in discussions about classics or favorites enough. It's pure, distilled fun. When I think of anime that are just a blast to watch, I think Outlaw Star.

Yeah, I always liked it because it got me pumped to watch an episode.

I loved this show when I was younger. I remember being so excited when I got my two-episode VHS tape because I got to see the show unedited for the first time; that opening sequence was incredible to me. I also remember buying the $45 dvd sets with eight to nine episodes.

Those were the days.

I watched the whole series a couple years ago and it still holds up. I'd say the only bad thing was hearing Melfina's voice. It was just so grating, ESPECIALLY when she sung. Other than that the voice cast is pretty damn awesome. It was such a trip seeing it the first time and hearing hot 90s Rogue voicing Aisha. Damn she was awesome.

When I saw Ron MacDougall again, I can't unsee the similarity between him and the older Robert Garcia from Neogeo Battle Coliseum

It's sad the series didn't go on for longer. There was such an incredibly detailed mythos they created, it's such a shame we don't get to see more.

I'm still in the process of backing up my DVDs for my HTPC. Might give the series another watch when I do.

Oh yeah does anyone know what the deal was with those ending songs? Like the story behind those images? I never ever understood them.

Did any of you get that Bandai "Anime Collector" figure set that came out around 2001 or 2002? I remember being so excited when I found out that they were making not only figures of Gene and Melfina, but the Outlaw Star itself! I still remember the day I got that set. My mom bought it for me without question because she knew how much I loved the show and talked about that thing. I still have them somewhere too.

I loved that set so much.

No real idea either, but searching it up says that the illustrator was Hikaru Tanaka. I can't really confirm that or not, but that's the only name I saw pop up.

I would assume it was mostly a matter of "your illustrations have a nice sci-fi/fantasy feel to them, would you mind us using them in the ending credit sequence?" I always loved to watch them every time it was ending on Toonami. I still catch myself sitting through the credits every episode when I rewatch it too, haha.

What did y'all think of grappler combat? I always thought it was weird, and still do. Here's a crazy awesome spaceship... with arms!
I really loved it. The idea of giving these massive ships arms to fight with was hilarious. It didn't really do much in terms of shaking up convention, because it essentially played out the same if you replaced it with mechs, but it gave it a nice visual identity for the combat.

I don't really understand. The original sequence from Wanted was already great source material for an animated GIF. I'm not sure why replacing the main character's head with a meme frog image and changing "FUCK YOU" to "GET OUT" improves things at all.

OS is the only anime I will ever own. And this is coming from somebody that generally hates anime.

Anyone have comparison shots for the R1 set and the R2 remastered set? I watched the first two discs this week and the first thing I noticed was how dirty everything looked. I suppose that could be the fact that I'm not watching this on a 21 inch SDTV from 1987 anymore, but other series I've watched on my HDTV that were on DVD's have looked significantly cleaner than this.

The R1 release came from a composite master, and may have crammed the whole series onto 3 DVDs for extra awfulness. I'll have to dig it out later and come up with some comparison shots. The downside of the HD-mastered R2 release is that it lacks any English language option or subtitles.

The R1 set is 6 discs. The HK set is 3.

I'd love an HD remaster but that's not happening.

I was really confused when I purchased the collection because the box actually says "the entire series on three discs" or something. Then, I opened it up to find six. I guess they meant volumes, but I thought something was wrong at first, haha.
