RTTP: Pilotwings Resort (at New 3DS speed)

SI_3DS_PilotWingsResort.jpg

MY STORY
I was thinking back to the 3DS launch, where I was so excited I sat on a children's toy and got my picture in the local newspaper.
Why would a grown man do that? For Pilotwings! And for fun. I had waited some 15 years for more Pilotwings and here was a new game. Good times.

WHAT'S CHANGED
So here we are, on the eve of the Nintendo Switch launch, I thought I'd revisit memory lane and play Pilotwings Resort again but this time on my Luma enabled N3DS.

Pilotwings Resort, like most games created by the talented folks over at Monster Games, runs at an unlocked framerate. This means that, with Luma unlocking the full speed of the N3DS for games that were made before it existed, the game runs at a better, smoother frame-rate than it did on the Original 3DS. Even with 3D enabled, things are as smoother than the were originally. This makes the game more responsive and even more enjoyable.

RTTP
So there's no better time to play this classic game. IMHO it's the best in the series.

FAQ

You realize when you overclock a device like this where you can't control the internal temperature increase from increased clock speed you will shorten the life span, right? Wanted to warn since I adore my 3DS and incoming New 3DS (tomorrow! New Pikachu Edition, my first New 3DS).

I'd kill for a Pilotwings 64 similar to OoT or Star Fox port.

I bought this at launch because I got caught up in the hype before realizing I don't really enjoy Pilotwings games that much. Still played it a lot because there wasn't many other games I wanted and I felt the need to validate my purchase...

Is it even considered overclocking when you are running at the actual n3ds clockspeed?

Is it even considered overclocking when you are running at the actual n3ds clockspeed?

Yeah, I think it's more akin to the PS4's "Boost Mode" than real overclocking. He's just running OG 3DS software at the N3DS increased clock rate, which the hardware is designed to handle for N3DS-only games.

I fucking loved this game! I am hoping against hope we get a Switch Pilotwings someday with multiple islands (along with my two other Nintendo favorites, Wave Race and 1080 Snowboarding).

Is it even considered overclocking when you are running at the actual n3ds clockspeed?

Yes, because the New 3DS doesn't use the same exact internal chips to achieve higher clock speeds. It uses hardware designed to run at those faster clock speeds on chip and in the internal design of the system to allow proper cooling and heat transfer. Also, the New 3DS has different CPU altogether and more RAM, not just faster clock speed. I'd probably argue the RAM would make even a bigger difference.

The game is being played on a New3DS, though. Luma is just forcing an old game to make use of the higher clock speed. (Preventing the New 3DS from underclocking?)

OP, said overclocked New 3DS. I guess I was thinking 3DS overclocked. Regardless OP is overclocking said hardware.

I'd kill for a Pilotwings 64
I've recently played this, too. It's good but I think it has aged quite badly. i don't think we'll see it in any form on any VC going forward.

I'm not overclocking so I've edited the OP. I'm simply allowing the game to run at N3DS speed rather than being limited to O3DS speed.

Anyway. Great game!

I enjoyed it but I also played a bunch of the plane mode on Wii Sports Resort so I wish that they used a different map. Though the different means of transportation meant that some parts of it felt fresh.

what i wouldn't give for someone to rip this game off and stick it on psvr. Lots of fun memories with PW64 the Christmas after release...20 years ago, my god.

A good game but one that fell by the wayside very quickly due to its being very pick-up-and-play as well as other games taking precedence.

I loved the N64 game, like REALLY loved it. It's in my top 5. Maybe I need to block out some time before next Friday and give this a proper go.

I enjoyed it but it really needed a couple more maps. Only one (re-used) map really cut the legs off the potential. I'm shocked they havnt released it on eshop as a budget title.

Game is easily picked up for <$10 on eBay...around $15 on Amazon.

Thanks for the post OP. To be clear - just pop in Pilotwings Resort in the N3DS and it runs smoother/faster? I am not sure why you highlighted overclocking if you're merely using a N3DS. Just causes confusion.

Now I've got the Glider music playing in my head. =)

Played this game to the point of perfecting every mission and getting all collectibles.

The 3D is still some of the best on the system. Being not only well-tuned, but also a launch title, which means they didn't have the lousy, toned-down 3D newer games have.

Is there footage showing how well it runs on an OC'd New 3DS?

I remember how the game would jump up to 60 fps on the original 3DS if you flew directly into the sky so that none of the actual world geometry was visible.

I really liked this game. I even consider it the Wii Sports of the 3DS. It uses all aspects of the 3DS. Yet like Wii Sports, it should've been bundled with all of them. Many avoided it because they didn't wanted to pay $40 on top of the $250 for hardware.

Looks like it's a homebrew app that requires Custom firmware etc.?

You reminded me of this kid.

Game in question was super fun, if frustrating at times. Complete all the missions but haven't done much of the free flight stuff. Should give it a try with Clock+L2 turned on.

Game is a launch game through and through. Thin in content but enjoyable for the 3 hours it lasted (got the best medals in all events ). Worth the tenner I paid for it.

I think if it only took you 3 hours you've not actually got the perfect red stars, or unlocked all the content?

3 stars (not medals) as you say is a moderate challenge, perfect red stars is quite exacting and tough, especially on Platinum.

Huh. They must have just recently added it. You still cannot download Steel Diver for some reason.
Added to eShop in all regions bank in Nov/Dec 2012.

No, you'll need a N3DS running modified system software to have the game take advantage of the extra power in the N3DS. Luma is my recommendation, but there are others.

Love Pilotwings and now we have 3DS in the house. But $40 digital? Shew.
It's a great game, but if you're on a budget go for physical. There are homebrew ways of converting the cart into a digital installed version.

Its been there for a while—at least a few years. Wikipedia says Dec. 2012, but I find that hard to believe.

I've been patiently awaiting a discount or sale so I can dispose of my physical copy. I enjoyed the game, but I've never been a fan of the artstyle, and the mii-ish artstyle was a downground to the already lacking Pilotwings style in my opinion. Still fun regardless.

Sorry, I was just making sure to point it out. I'm far from anal or strict about these things personally. I like to think I'm much less so than people I have seen and read on here. I buy all my gadgets and games to use, but not abuse.

Can one comment on how they like this Pilotwings versus the Nintendo 64 version? I haven't played the 3DS version yet. I pick up my New 3DS from Gamestop tomorrow (PIkachue edition). Upgrading from original black.

and suddenly I need a new 3ds. Thanks OP had no idea it got better than the 3ds xl experience. also agree monster games did a good job here and while I prefer pilot wings 64 resort is still the goods.

Game was so much fun and basically what I wanted from a modern Pilotwings - except for the one island. Give us five islands and it could've been a real classic. It fills a niche too, arcade flying that's not military.

OK, can we let this go now? It's not overclocking. Please edit any quoted references to that phrase as I've edited it out elsewhere.

I've already stated above about this. I feel P64 has aged quite badly. It plays OK, though only has one difficulty, which is quite hardcore. Plus it doesn't look that great, and it's not easy to emulate if you don't have a real N64.

Wow!

£39.99 on the eshop, looks like I won't be returning to Wuhu anytime soon.
Physical copies go for £$€10 and can be converted to a digital, permanently installed copy if you know what you're doing on a modified 3DS.

You need to run modified software on your N3DS for it to get the extra performance.

Amen brother. It's one island and the little offshoot island though, you know? ;)
