It brought us the greatest commercial ever.

Also as much as I love Ren & Stimpy, Rocko's modern was way more consistent in quality.

this too. actually, i think it's unfair to rocko that it gets compared so much. i understand it: rocko had the same kind of grossout humor in the first season, but it was toned down a lot in later seasons in favor of character-based humor. the premise of an episode could be fun just because of the pairing of certain characters. unlike ren & stimpy, rocko actually got funnier and funnier with each passing season too, something no other nick comedies were able to do with the exception of maybe the adventures of pete & pete.

i kinda wish john k wasn't so uh, passionate. he seems to hate writers, but damn could he ever use one.

I always thought that the Nickelodeon comics were actually more consistent than the show itself, partly because artists like Ken Mitchroney and Mike Kazaleh were pretty much free to put their own personality on the characters. It wasn't just John K who left during the split, a lot of really talented people left with him. The Games shows over-compensate, I think, as the excerpt in post #46 shows. It wasn't funny and weird, it just got weird.

One of the GOAT cartoons from the era of GOAT cartoons, in a GOAT channel's prime year.

One day when I'm settled down, I'll rewatch all of those episodes once again.

the husk episode was the episode that finally made me question if this was really suitable for kids when i was a wee lad.

in fact, i think it was the first time i took into account that cartoons had hidden innuendos.

I told you I'd shoot but you didn't believe me!
Why didn't you believe me!?

Stimpy's Invention is always the first episode I come back to when I want to watch the show again.

At the time it aired, I wasn't familiar with what was being parodied there.Years later I heard some Burl Ives kids songs and laughed my ass off because it clicked with me what they were doing finally. I mean, I always thought it was funny anyway, but I thought it was just random silliness.

Although I did always think, even as a kid, that the specific line "I'll teach your grandma to suck eggs" was possibly a Hobbit reference. Who knows.

All the Spumco stuff is great and the other half of Season 2 where Games finished various Spumco episodes for them. Pretty hit and miss after that.

The Adult Party Cartoon episodes that never got aired on Spike are all really good ("The Lost Episodes"). They really hit their stride with the revived show by the end.

People who liked the first couple of season of Ren and Stimpy should check out the New Adventures of Mighty Mouse, which had some of the same crew. I think Bakshi is kind of meandering on his own, and John K can be abrasive but they balanced out great. Well, until the fundamentalists at the American Family Association moaned, but that's another story.

There was an insane amount of talent who worked on Mighty Mouse. John K and some of the key future Spumco folks, Bruce Timm, Andrew Stanton, Rich Moore, Tom Minton, etc.

I'M FINISHED!

Um exCUSE me Sakurai but CLEARLY the best choice for Smash Bros would be my fav niche character HOWEVER you are clearly INCOMPETENT and
Bestest most greatest Nicktoon of all times x infinity! All other Nicktoons are garbage tier in comparison. Seriously, Ren & Stimpy is still the king of all Nicktoons.

All those quotes are real Burl Ives quotes from either songs he sang or movies (The Big Country). That's the best part.

Modern CGI is so underrated by 2D purists.

I wouldn't even consider myself a 2D purist. A lot of my favorite animated films are 3D. Making a 3D Ren & Stimpy to me is just missing the point. The series was predicated on the goal of trying to recreate and expand upon the qualities of the 2D animated golden age. Particularly Jones/Clampett style exaggerated expressions and sight gags.

The idea of someone re-imagining a JohnK cartoon in 3D seems almost mean spirited to me.

Golden Age and an era distinction not a qualitative assessment.

John K had a good commentary track on the Great Piggy Bank Robbery cartoon which was on the Looney Tunes Golden Collection, which you must watch to understand his cartoons, because his cartoons are steeped in it's influence. Seriously-- three fingered humans, painted stills of grotesque characters, BIG pupils, etc.

It's also worth mentioning that a lot of the intensely exaggerated expressions, non sequiturs and bizarre sight gags that are rampant now in web cartoons, popularized through animators like Egorapter are heavily indebted to Spumco's style.

John K sonned a lot of these fools running wild with the style.

Oh yeah, for sure. Mix Gilardi's .MOV series is almost 100% like John K's style.

I'm not a fan of MLP but this parody series was amazing.

lol yeah, I'm actually a huge fan of his parody series as well having never actually watched MLP outside of two episodes way after the fact.

sponge-bob is also clearly influenced by spumco style, but a more accessible variant of it. John K throws some bitter quips in his blog posts at SB every now and again.

does anyone know what's going on with Cans Without Labels?

No idea what's going on with Cans Without Labels. I read the latest backer update and the last batch of John K. doodles have been sent out.

I thought I'd bring this up since some dudes have expressed interest in seeing a Ren & Stimpy movie.

Life Sucks animatic 1.

Life Sucks Animatic 2.

Someone (I don't think it was John K.) came up with the idea for an episode of Adult Party Cartoon where Ren & Stimpy would chronicle the history of the world. With Ren obviously representing the nihilistic side. John K. liked the idea so much that he began teasing that it would be a Ren & Stimpy straight to DVD movie. This is going back many years ago and nothing has really come of it.

Another planned episode of Adult Party Cartoon was a sequel to The Great Outdoors episode featuring George Liquor.

I could watch the cartoon for hours due to the animation alone. John Kricfalusi is the greatest animator of our time. I'll support any future projects he decides to work on.

I'm totally a 2D purist.

While I respect CGI and the hard work of the animators who work on those films, I can't say I'm really a fan of it at all. I do love Pixar, but almost entirely because of the storytelling present in those movies.
