Rumor & Speculation: Nintendo/Apple alliance?

Finally...

Please search next time you want to post a thread.

This topic comes up every week, about twice as often when it's near a major conference.

Not really much of "nintendo" in that rumor...

but i think it would be interesting to see a apple / nintendo collaboration

if it ever came to be... they would be a problem indeed.

why don't Nintendo fans think Nintendo's cool and why do they want to be thought of as cool so bad? if Nintendo fans don't think Nintendo's cool, why would anybody else.

I wonder if anyone thinks you're cool ? Because if GAF doesn't think you're cool, then you aren't and you should stop posting here.

Sure, the companies design similar looking products (well, actually, the Revolution looks like what Apple has been designing for the past five years with the G4 line, I guess), but don't they have completely different sales philosophies?

Apple has long been charging premiums on what they have marketed as cutting edge technology (whether that is true or not I guess you could debate). Nintendo, with the Revolution, is looking to grab a whole new genre of gamers ("non-gamers") who normally would be out of the whole gaming spectrum due to cost and usability.

There are obvious places where a partnership would make sense-- and this is pure conjecture based mostly on the fact that the Revolution looks like an Apple product-- but on the whole, does it really benefit either company as far as complementing and fleshing out each others' product lines and philosophies?

No way will this happen, especially with Apple switching from Power PC to Intel. I think it's just Apple wanting to take a stab at the living room as well and the Mac Mini is the perfect size. I could see it working if it was done right and for the right price. Here's what I would like to see out of the new Mac Mini:
1. Plays the newest games (both PC & Mac?)
2. Has DVR-like functionality
3. Has BluRay read/write support
4. Has web browsing
5. Has video conferencing (this could really sell it if done right)
6. Wireless keyboard & mouse
7. Retails for around $500

It would be cool to see Apple get some exclusive games as well. I believe Halo originally started as a Mac game.

It's Apple announcement time and so here is Joystiq's wild specualtion:

This would be great if true.

Imagine if Apple controlled the DRM/downloadable aspect of revolution? Wasn't there one big iitem still to be announced?
I wouldn't mind, Apple's great at developing User interface. If Nitnendo could get Apple to design Revolution's virtual Console interface that'll be great.

But that's not gonna happen

imho last thing nintendo would ever do is a partnership with a big name like apple, we all know what happened when the last time they toyed with an idea like that. (super happy bastard child playstation perfroms demi on nintendo's markets share)

nintendos console ship has sailed in the USA. They're a kids market now... not mainstream with broad appeal of ages (ie. PS2, iPod or xbox)

apple doesn't need iTunes Mario version.

The problem with an alliance is the general stubborness of both companies, particularly Apple. This is the Apple that refused to give HP price protection on their version of the iPod and ended up charging ultimately lower prices than them while moving straight into HP-domain like RadioShack and WalMart. This is the same Apple that showed off the iPod nano the same day as the Motorola ROKR phone.

Quite frankly, if they wanted to pursue a partnership, I hope it's Yamauchi that oversees it.

What would be the point for Apple, or Nintendo? Because I'm really not seeing how Ipod to Gameboy or Apple computers to Revolution connection provides any benefit to anyone.. including consumers.

Maybe I should have said starting at $500, like they are currently. I don't think it's unrealistic to have all of those features minus the most current top of the line video card in a year or two for around $500. The point is neither Sony or Microsoft has been able to sucessfully execute an all in one box. Apple could come out on top if they did it right and it was the right price. One of the biggest impacts of Apple switching to Intel is that it's supposed to lower the price.

Apple does want a piece of the living room, but I doubt it includes partnering with Nintendo. It will be more for DVR + Front Row + iTunes + iPhoto. Not games.

if anything.....

Apple and Intel will work together on an entertainment box of some kind to take on Xbox360 and PS3 or next-next Xbox and PS4.

Apple and Nintendo ? no way.

FIXED

With any luck it's just some collaboration, like Apple helping with case design or marketing know-how? Or as has been mentioned, some iTunes User Interface lessons etc.

I think even if this isn't the case, Nintendo would be nuts not to blatantly rip off iTunes. Was it some patent a while ago for the Virtual Console that revealed they were going the whole 'genre > developer > franchise' route for selecting games? That lends itself well to the iTunes 'way'.

Apple would never succeed in the games market because it doesn't have the distribution channels. They wonder why they only have 2% of the PC market when (at least in Australia) there's only about 5 places i can buy them from! It's no coincidence (again here) that iPod really took off only when it was available from every tom, dick and harry.

Apple seem to be really good at dealing out and dealing with shortages tho :)

yeah it won't happen, but it would be cool and really good for nintendo in the west if the rev download service just was itunes full stop. So you could do song video etc as well as games.

Also, I hope a ferrari appears in my garage.

The next gen Mac Mini I could see being a console competitor though, if it has the current Mac Mini features, DVR, Downloadable games service via GameTap or something, iTunes, custom controllers, and plays new PC games like the Phantom was supposed to.

They could make major waves.
