Rumor: Titanfall also 720p?

Got inspired by these recent events...

I'm assuming that you don't have a mid range PC, because it can do most of your points. What is the better Kinect Experience? Better sound compared to what? I don't understand you last point at all, live service being shared isn't a bullet point you can add on what makes the XB1 version more appealing, unless you mean that it make it easier for you to transition to the next console.

Only thing I can really understand being a reason to get it on XB1 is the fact that your friends will be there. Besides that there are just much more benefits to getting it on PC (where my friends and I will be playing).

Yes the "live service" benefit for me is it will make the transition easier and also I won't be getting rid of my 360 anytime soon so I can share 1 account between the two consoles.

I did say this is the reason I am upgrading. I do have a good high end PC but not many friends game on there and don't want to bother with updating drivers and other tedious task that PC Gamers must deal with.

Taking into account what that customer likely already owns (a 360, a television, and probably some sort of mobile device like a smartphone or a tablet), the xbone doesn't exactly make a great case for itself. If a resolution jump as large as 720p to 1080p doesn't matter to said customer, how much will better lighting/textures (or media/connectivity features he already has on his mobile device) matter to him?

That remains to be seen :P

Full disclosure: I am one of those customers that owns all of the things you mentioned, and thinks the Xbox One jump is more than fine. Is it apparently as a big a jump as the PS4 is, based on current reported specs, or compared to modern PCs? No, of course not. But I wasn't expecting that anyway. And I'm personally interested in more things than just resolution by itself. And as I mentioned earlier in this thread, I'm apparently blind and can't eyeball resolution differences as easily as other folks can anyway (though I can easily notice plenty of other graphical differences)

A cross-gen title that already has underwhelming graphics needing to make extreme graphical compromises doesn't bode well for the rest of the console cycle. There's probably going to be a lot of disappointment on launch day with regards to visual fidelity, even with PS4 early adopters.

This is under the assumption that 1080p->720p automatically is seen as an "extreme graphical compromise". I'd argue that the "extremity" of that compromise will vary from person to person. It's a compromise, no doubt (more pixels are more pixels regardless of my personal feelings), but again, it's certainly possible for other factors outweigh that for a given individual. I'm not saying "720p >>> 1080p, it's more filmic yo!" or anything like that, but it just means that for some people, other features and visual tricks can be vastly more important (and noticeable) to them.

I guess in a couple months we'll find out if more people are like me, or like the rest of GAF, lol.

I really hate this misconception that PC gaming is "difficult", most shit is automated these days, I don't even need to restart to update graphic drivers!

Is this dude joking? I feel I've lost sight of who is serious and who is not anymore after yesterday lol

He's been serious, He doesn't understand no one would watch those channels if there was also an ABC FullHD that happened to be 20% cheaper.

It's not really about being 720p, it's about being 720p for $499 when it looks like you can get 1080p for $399

He has lots of friends that work for Microsoft. He has always had a soft touch when it comes to criticizing things on a MS Console but has always freely blown up about the slightest thing on a Sony or Nintendo one. It took a LOT fan feedback to get him to finally talk about and begrudgingly criticize Microsoft on his podcast after E3.

The game will be just as amazing wether it is 1080p or 720p. Sorry but graphics do not make a game.

Everyone who has tried this game at the big industry shows love it. Also this game has taken home the most awards. It is the best looking game coming out for next gen and I am not talking about graphics.

Sony fanboys are finding everything possible to knit pick and bash the Xbox One but truth is the reason the PS4 is 399 and not shipping with a camera and only 4gb of ram is because MS won the last gen so Sony had to do what they can to win back gamers.

Lol, 4gig of RAM.

Graphics are not the be all and end all, but why spend $500 dollars then?

Just get a 360 if graphics are of no consequence.

Also MS have fucked themselves, no need to nitpick.

Wow, I don't even know what the hell is with the media anymore. Sure, let's just keep aiming for th e lowest common denominator on brand new consoles after 8 years.

It's a bad example as quality between HD channels wildly varies depending on bitrate and what kind of encoders they're using. I find that FOX looks better than NBC despite FOX being 720p and NBC being 1080i.

That's quite funny. I actually thought he was being serious until he mentioned skyping with the COD Dog lol

Did you actually see the video he claimed was Xbox on the left, PS4 on the right? It was fucking great, the left was lower then 320x200 resolution, pixels were about 1cmx1cm - subtle but awesome.

The problem isn't that it's 720p specifically, or whether or not resolution is the most important factor in determining graphical fidelity, but when your new 500 dollar next-gen console can't render what are effectively pimped-up previous-gen games running on engines more than a decade old at atleast 1080p/60fps, then it's either drastically underpowered or (hopefully) lacking decent developer tools. Plenty of people have attributed current end-gen stagnation to aging hardware and constant compromises between resolution/framerate/effects, or that x86 will allow developers to optimize more quickly and more cost-effectively. If neither of those are true and next gen is just this gen but with share buttons then people are in for a lot of disappointment.

Again, 720p isn't probably the only place where this apparent power difference will rear its ugly head. If it under-delivers on resolution for one game, it's likely to under-deliver on lots of different things for other games.

This game will run and look better on Xbox one. Titanfall will not run at 720p on 360.

The reasons I am upgrading to Xbox One:
  • 64 Player BF4
  • Virutally No Load Times
  • Better Graphics
  • Friends are going to Xbox One
  • Better Kinect Experience
  • Better Sound
  • Live service can be shared between consoles
The game will be just as amazing wether it is 1080p or 720p. Sorry but graphics do not make a game.

Aren't you contradicting yourself in those comments?

In my defence I wasn't actually looking at the screen at that point, I was listening to it while I was browsing Gaf. I watched it again when I realised it was tongue in cheek. I love subtle humour.

terrible
a downsampled from 4k/70mm film 2d 720p video =/= an upscaled 720p render of a 3d game, the only thing they have in common is scaling blur.

When's the last time you saw jaggies, pixel crawling and shimmering in a movie, twitter man.

This sums up perfectly why you can't compare TV at 720p with video games at 720p.

Is he a journalist/reporter? Because most reporters try to find out the facts.

And plus what's wrong with wanting you're game/show to looks it best? I don't get it.

What's wrong is that the game won't look its best on the console he's a fanboy of. Cognitive dissonance at its best.

It isn't that we hate Microsoft. But we live and breathe this gaming stuff. Gaffers are gaming sharks compared to the mainstream. And we know when we smell blood.

good on you man, no one is trying to convince you not to buy one. If you like the system buy it and enjoy it, that's all that matters at the end.

Why would anyone defend 720...? Especially a gaming journalist. There is no question about it, 1080 looks significantly better than 720 upscaled to 1080.

Garnett usually defends MS while saying that he's just playing "devil's advocate", but I don't buy that, he's certainly biased.

Well I guess the nice part is if I get a Ps4 I can justify a vita.

I'll wait and see if there's a Black Friday deal on one.

If you asked me 6 months ago whether I'd ever get a Vita, I'd laugh at your face. I just bought one 2 weeks ago after the recent revelations and the free PS+ games. I can't tell you how happy I am. I haven't turned on the PS3 in 2 weeks to play GTA.
Also, bought one now so I could get the OLED.

I just cannot get my head around the "720 is fine" opinion of some people. It's defeatist mentality from the start of the next gen. You'd think there wasn't another, significantly more powerful gaming console coming out at the same time,,,,

What ya talkin' about? 720p is the sweet spot!

It's probably not the best time to be the guy defending Garnett, but I really don't think it's fair to call him a fanboy. You don't stumble into running the best gaming podcast around for as long as he has if you don't project some level of objectivity.

I will say that his show DESPERATELY needs a new Shane, but instead, he surrounds himself with people who either love the same things he loves or people who love everything.

And yeah, the tweet was dumb on several levels...at face value...weak argument...wading into troubled waters...etc.
