[RUMOUR] FairGame$ has been cancelled. [Update: Pachter says he "misspoke"]

Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest.

Pachter has never not been a clown. I won't suddenly take his word when he's spent the better part of 15 years gassing up Xbox and bullshitting about PlayStation only to get proven wrong time and again (at least whenever he said stuff publicly).

That said I won't be surprised if Fairgames has been cancelled. I also agree with Pachter's opinions on current SIE upper management, or most of his sentiment anyway. Regardless, I'll wait until Jason writes up an official report (if he does, assuming this is true) before giving any real belief to the game having been cancelled.

Astrobot ? Returnal ? Investing in Stellar Blade and Silent Hill 2 remake ? Spider-Man 2 ? Miles Morales even ? GT7 ? Countless other experiences and GOTY nominations every year ?

Returnal was pre-current SIE and approved under Layden's reign. Astro was probably approved under Layden too, but maybe could've been Jim. Stellar Blade & Silent Hill 2 would've fallen under Jim Ryan's reign. Spiderman 2 & Miles Morales under Shawn's (tho, Spiderman 2 has its issues). GT7 was under Shawn & Jim's.

FWIW, when I personally speak of SIE's current leadership, I mean post-Jim Ryan. Although some of the things like the initial GAAS plan, probably came from above him, and those people are still currently at SIE.

Boohoo, a remake-focused studio was put on something else.

What do you mean "boo hoo"? It was dumb as hell to put Bluepoint on a GOW GAAS. They don't have the experience in making GAAS titles, and you can't just suddenly "get" that experience in 2-3 years especially if you want a competent GAAS with an IP as big as God of War.

It was a terrible management decision and should be called out as such.

Marathon is next.

What the fuck were these guys thinking. Did they just wholesale outsource their thinking to resetera? Enjoy your billion dollar hole.

Edit: I'm frustrated with Marathon, it looks freaking incredible and should have been a damn single player game.

Playstation is doing so badly. They should fire the Japanese guy and Hermen Hulst... and Druckmann. And bring in Shawn and the guy who made the first PS1.

With all their nonsense like Concord, Marathon, and all that... With that budget, we would have had enough for Japan Studio, Bloodborne 2, and Gravity Rush 3. We'd have had more games.

People just wanted Factions 2. The first game was fun.

But no as the managers wanted billion dollars, not just mere millions. They wanted to create a new Fortnite and they'll still try until they are gone. They are believers and it's not their money or their IP.
Even if Factions failed, one could say it was worth a shot, and it would still promote the franchise and TV show. But I think Factions F2P or $19.99, on all platforms including Xbox Day One, would definitely have longevity.

There are still many Sony executives, most American C-suite morons, that are STILL working for the company after this absolute disaster with the Live service slop. That should tell you everything you need to know about Playstations's bleak future and American corporations in general. Sony needs to fire them all and move the headquarters back to Japan, this disaster would have never happened if they hadn't moved the gaming division's HQ to California

And for everyone that's gonna gloat about profits, these are short-term gains in exchange for the brand's reputation and future. They're fleecing gamers now but how long do you think it's gonna last? The frustrations are gonna built up and they'll implode like many other game companies have the last few years

Here's the quote"

"They didn't buy people who know how to make live service games. And then they turned all their console developers into live service developers, which resulted in Concord being shut down. and the studio being shut down. Uh, which resulted in Jade Raymond being let go and her game cancelled. Uh, they are bad managers. They don't know what they're doing."

Sounds like he is making this shit up as he goes
Sounds like an analyst missing the forest through the trees imo.

Lack of technical expertise isn't the issue with these games. The issues are social retards who don't know their audience making too many decisions, hubris preventing management from course correcting on time, and misplaced fear in calling out the real issues from people with voices loud enough to be heard. IMO of course.

He was talking 1st party though. PS1 had some decent games made by 1st parties but not many.
It had tons of superhigh quality exclusives, and we back then, in mid/late 90s didnt even understand whats first or 2nd party, what mattered was- if game is of high quality and if its only avaiable on one platform.
For example all those bangers from square, konami and namco, they were all on same lvl as exclusive from sony first party like gran turismo to us- customers :)

The photo that ruined Western games forever.

Probably the only company pic I've ever seen where the lead is up front and centre with a 5 ft radius around them. Such an odd pic you can barely see anyone behind her. Hardly anyone else is even smiling. They look miserable.

GaaS worked for most studios, modern Sony is just bad at doing multiplayer games.

I agree, but I quoted someone specifically talking about 1st party. Outside Gran Turismo, all of PS1s heavy hitters were 3rd party.

Wait wait...have we even seen recent gameplay footage of this?
Was it just the CGI gameplay trailer from 2023?

Said it a week or so ago in another thread. Fairgames is cancelled and the team is doing support on Marathon. That's why the studio head left months and months ago.
This makes the most logical sense to me after she left.

Sounds like a win for Sony if that is the case

I have lost all respect for Sonys leadership after this gen - they have not delivered anything really besides Helldivers 2 (which seemed like something they barely believed in..)

They have fucked up so bad so imo they should have lost this gen - Xbox saved them by being even worse though
Aside from H2 (which was already based on an existing franchise), all their other new GAAS have either bombed, cancelled or studio shut down already. Never mind even releasing one game, some of them didnt even show one pic or preview video. Even Bungie started going down the tubes the second they bought them as D2 tanked and Marathon is the next biggest laugh behind Concord. By the time Marathon releases, all Sony got out of them is 4 years of D2 DLC and 2-3 waves of layoffs. That's the GAAS overseer studio they bought. The studio that's supposed to know what to do and guide SIE how to make MP games.

All Sony had to do with all that cash to burn is either pocket it or funnel it to what they know best - SP games. Expand their current studios, or buy up SP studios if they were that gung ho about spending money during those low interest/inflation years. But the COD and Fortnite money is too big to ignore.

For whatever reason, Sony has never been good at MP/GAAS. And similar to the PS3 days they repeated the exact same mistake. Too many at once. And too many shooters. PS3 had Resistance, KZ, Mag, Socom, Warhawk/Starhawk, 1-2 of those big battle PC ports. I probably even missed some. Way too many all on top of each other. Every other big company has had successful shooter IPs, but some reason Sony's never stick.

If Sony's master GAAS plan shown years ago came through on time and released, they would of had the exact same situation..... H2, Concord, Fairgames, whatever game Deviation Studios was making, Destiny, Marathon, Factions 2. And maybe even some other shooters I forgot. All at the same time. No other game company floods so many shooters. I dont think even UBI does even thoigh many of their most popular games have guns.

You mean GaaS worked for A FEW studios in a worldwide market, many of which started to quickly deteriorate after some years. Gamers saw the writing on the wall many years ago but not these greedy morons that are paid millions to supposedly keep their ears to the ground, they thought flooding an already saturated market with a dozen more GaaS slop would be such a great idea. And let's make these games woke too because apparently gamers love that shit!

Executives are detached from reality in general but American ones are the worst of the worst, absolutely delusional people that have no connection or understanding of their customers

Hoping for the game to be canceled which undoubtedly would lead to a lot of firings is an odd choice instead of just wishing for a good game, especially when it comes from a place of not liking GaaS. We'd never have seen something like Nightrein if the fans had a vote in something coming out.

That sentence makes no logical sense! Each point, many of which are far from supportable in fact, do not follow on from each other.

Also, the big laugh here is him calling out Sony for bad management despite him handwaving off Phil Spencer and team's decade and a half of serial incompetence which has led to the Xbox Brand being at its lowest ebb since the OG Xbox era!

Truly embarrassing.

For anyone really chomping at the bit for some hot news about Fairgame$ (whoever the hell that could be) a rumor coming from Michael Pachter sounds like some Monkey's Paw shit.

Also, I know the name was changed, but I'm still typing out the dollar sign in "Fairgame$" the same way I still say "Twitter"; because neither of these shitty things deserve any sort of a rebrand and because the pure spite of using their original names is fun for me.

Here's the quote"

So looking at the actual quote regarding Fairgame$ itself, it sounds more like hearsay than anything else. That's without the lack of confidence in anything Michael Pachter has to say. There's been a wealth of negative news about Fairgame$, aside from last year's rumor that the game was testing well internally...a rumor that slipped out not long after Concord crashed and burned at that time.

Yeah, it's extremely easy to believe that Fairgame$ has quietly taken out back and shot, but anyone could with even a cursory glance of news about the game. No one needs Michael Pachter's input to come to that conclusion.

This is going to be the saddest PR damage control campaign in the history of entertainment. Just shut the fuck up and move forward. Ignore it happened. Literally just memory hole everything.

Do not let the retards responsible for digging a billion dollar hole try to dig you out of it. Get the hell away from them immediately.

Get the fuck rid of Marathon too and move on, all of that shit and those people are fucking cursed. My Lord, it's like Sony has a horrifying viral infection.

Oh come on. Everyone knows this game is doomed. They aren't doing anybody any favors by crapping this out when it's overwhelmingly obvious the market doesn't want it.

These people already got the privilege of working a well-paying job for several years on some "make work" project that has zero value to anyone. They should thank Hermen for Sony's Paycheck Protection Program.

They need to re-hire Jade Raymond asap.
Whole PlayStation division needs a total restructure, this shit is like a virus it will just keep repopulating if you don't flush the entire system.

Hulst should hire a non woke consultant agency to perform an company-wide exorcism on PlayStation.

He needs to go too.

Without knowing much about it. People were hoping it was a failure from the announcement just to tank their live service push. It's delusional to think there wasn't an agenda behind it. Sony is screwing the pooch in execution of things, but they weren't wrong in the direction they were taking their shot.

People shat on another hero shooter coming out when Marvel Rivals did great. We've had other super hero properties come that tanked so we know character familiarity only goes so far. Even good ones like Guardians of the Galaxy couldn't move the needle much.

There's clearly a demand and excitement for extraction shooters yet Marathon is having issues.

Listening to these forums mean jack shit when it comes to what people beyond this bubble want. Damn near no one talks much about the highest selling games year after year here, no do they mention mobile much at all except to shit on it. Sony is screwing the pooch in execution of things, but they weren't wrong in the direction they were taking their shot.

And what if it was BluePoint's idea?

Besides, it's not like their games sell millions, no matter how amazing their remakes are.

They just need to admit PC is great and has it's own way in the industry. Otherwise, they'll keep devaluing themselves.

I feel all their hardware people do a fantastic job, I'm on Series X now but fondly remember how awesome my PS5 consoles were hardware wise.

It's everything else that is horrifying. (Obviously not everything!)
