Sorry, couch potatoes -- the verdict is in: People who exercise regularly really do live longer.

Those who took on more intense exercise -- the equivalent of running half an hour a day five days every week -- extended their lives by about 3.5 to 3.7 years, the researchers found.
I run half an hour to 45 minutes a day 5 times a week. Though I drink like a fish.

In addition, recent studies have also found that exercise has payoffs for the mind, too. It has been shown to improve overall well-being, reduce stress and depression, and cut the risk of Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia, several experts said.
This is the biggest benifit I've noticed, it's a great way to relieve stress and anxiety.

OMG exercise is good for you?! Whoddya thunk that? ;)

Yep, I've been running on a regular basis running for the last 6 years it's great.

WHO WANTS TO LIVE FOREVER?

I run 4 to 5 times a week, 45 mins to an hour each time. All I'm getting is 3.5 to 3.7 more years? Shit! I'll take it easy and won't sweat the small increase in lifespan!

:lol

Just kidding. Once you get in shape, running is kind of like a drug, and you can actually learn to love it. When I skip for a few days, usually for recovering from an injury, I find I miss it, and I feel like crap that I haven't had my run.

No I think the jury's still out on scissors.

My exercise story: 4 years ago my BP was 120/80. After 3 years of playing volleyball 3-4 times a week for 2-4 hours a day my BP is down to 96/70. My resting heart rate is also down from 65 to 56. Of course some of that is likely due to diet - although I will say that my diet has only gotten worse over that span of time. I really have to make some changes there as my dad has become a type II diabetic (as was his father).

The way I see it you can have your three years at the end. I'll take the time now and not waste it running in circles.

no that is a norm. I run for 2 hours every morning at 6. I do it for boxing/kungfu. I'm trying to become a beast so i must have tons of endurance

You actually can over do it with your running, and most experts will tell you that it's a good idea to have at least one or two rest days a week. It'll help your muscles bounce back and prevent small nagging injuries.

Of course, it depends on how hard you are pushing yourself, distances you run, surfaces, etc. For me, I usually run 3.5-6 miles at a go, depending on the day, time available, etc. I prefer to trail run, but don't always have a chance to get out there, especially now that it gets dark earlier. When I trail run, it is much more taxing on your muscles, but is not as hard on your joints because you are not impacting on concrete if you run on the streets, for instance.

Take a look at a training schedule for a marathon, and you'll see at least one rest day built into any given week.

I've finally hit the breaking point to where I once again care about my physical fitness and diet. It's at the point where I actually FEEL unhealthy (not just out of shape-- unhealthy), so I figure it's time to change. First thing I'm doing to try to drop some pounds is cutting all this fried food from my diet. No fries anymore, no fried chicken, etc. Trying to cut it all out, and I figure that alone will make an improvement.

I also started using one of those elipticals over the weekend. Such a pain in the ass workout. It fucking targets specific muscles in your legs and I hate it :lol. I can go run a mile and get a killer workout cardio-wise, but my legs won't be tired. I went a quarter mile (THATS IT!) on the eliptical and my leg muscles felt like I just got done with six sets of squats at 250+lbs. But I have no doubt that once I get to where I can steadily go a mile and a half to two miles on that thing, I'll be doing pretty good as far as getting into shape goes.

so basically, if you spend the equivalent of 2 years of your life running and doing nothing but running, you get 3.5-3.7 years back. A net gain of not even 2 years? Doesn't really seem worth the effort of self torture =P

Damn... all of that running for not even 4 full years added onto your lifespan?
That sucks. By the time you're that old, 4 years probably feels like 1...

considering some of you are probably going to die in your 40's.. that's probably more significant than you think.

not pointing at anyone in particular...

I play volleyball A LOT, and I find that I don't really get enough of a workout from it. Unless of course, it's beach volleyball.
When I was bicycling 4-5 times a week to work, I noticed my endurance (and waistline) were a lot better than just playing volleyball. I love volleyball atleast as much as anyone else, but let's face it: It's not that intense of a workout compared to other sports and other forms of exercise.
