Yes its a reddit repost, but its definitely worth a thread in and of itself.... really interesting interview with Russell Brand, very self aware of the way he is portrayed in the media, and actually a really smart dude. Always love celebrity interviews where you see the interviewee in a new light

For a topic of conversation post some interviews where your expectation of celebrities were changed.

Paxman really is a mong in that interview, I just saw the first couple of minutes again, when trying to demonstrate how some people are famous for actually doing something and some people are famous just for being famous, he says "Richard Dawkins is famous for being an atheist" - the fuck? How is that an accomplishment?! And Russell Brand is a huge stand-up comedian, TV presenter, radio presenter, newspaper columnist, author, and actor (and I've probably missed a few things there) - those are obvious accomplishments. Paxman is trolling hardcore. No wonder Brand doesn't wanna live in England anymore, after how he gets treated by both the lowbrow tabloids and the highbrow commentators.

Paxman is trolling hard. Don't feed the troll, guys.

I'm usually not one to say something like this, but it's an absolute crime that they're remaking Drop Dead Fred with this guy. Rik Mayall, he is not.

The thing about American's who say he's not funny is that all they've ever seen him in is his shitty movies.

Check out

-His book 'My Booky Wook', the second best autobiography of the last ten years after Dreams from My Father by Barack Obama. Still haven't read the sequel yet...

-His podcasts. Greatest podcast of all time.

-His stand-up comedy.

Saying he's shitty just because of his recent comedy movies is like saying Robert De Niro is shitty just because of his recent comedy movies.

seems like a smart guy. Has more depth to him than previously perceived. does seem him a bit hyperactive all the time though.

i can't stand the way he 'elucidates' every sentence with his overly-convulted verb dropping. Such verbal-diarrhea. Doesn't make you sound smart Russell; just desperate to impress

I'm so glad we got rid of him yet I feel so bad for the US right now.

Yeaaaaaa...no. I don't think so. I cant comment on the book or podcast but I saw one of his stand-up specials on C4 and it was terrible.

Brand said that Dawkins is famous as a scientist and an atheist. He wrote that in his book, Paxman is just repeating it.

He's smart, but he sometimes uses words that he doesn't really understand and don't make sense in the context that he uses them.

Seen this interview ages ago. I remember thinking it was pretty good. Russell came off a lot more intelligent than people give him credit for.

YEah, i think for those in the UK this is well known. He's extremely sharp, his stuff for big brother big mouth was good, very creative with his synopsis of daily events.

Yeah it's a good interview, from when I saw it Paxman seemed a bit out of his depth in this kind of discussion though.

Haha! I was thinking the same thing - he looks to be completely out of his league. It's like watching Hitchens debate Maher

He is on point on the nature of celebrity and most certainly on point about the Daily Mail not giving a fuck about Andrew Sachs but masquerading their fervent disdain for the BBC as moral outrage.

I didn't really like him untill my sister made me watch Russell Brand's Ponderland and i instantly became a fan.

His book is REALLY entertaining.

I prefer Brand in that context, speaking naturally, instead of this try-hard vocab he put on for this interview.

That being said, he had a lot of interesting things to say.

I think a lot of men are threatened by Brand because women find him so sexually appealing, while still displaying a lot of feminine qualities.

I think Brand fits the definition of a pseudo intellectual, anyone that puts so much emphasis on the words longer than 3 syllables in their sentences are trying to hard to look intellectual.

This seemed a bit below Paxman, he rips apart politicians every week on Newsnight in this interview he seems to have held back.

Ricky Gervais has talked about this fame-in-modern day subject a lot particularly during Extras so i've kind of heard it before I guess but good interview anyway. I used to be really annoyed by the guy but now after this interview I do have more respect for him and am now indifferent towards him.

He gets to see Katy Perry naked, too lucky :(

Bro, you should see how she looks when she wakes up

He seems really sharp to me. I like his energy, but his voice is annoying and he looks like an idiot. Despite his best efforts, though, I somehow still like the guy.

Love that show. Here's his bit about how he used to fuck all the students he was teaching in his 'english as a foreign language' class:

It's not just Americans who think that he's rubbish. I remember watching Russell Brand once on Have I Got News For You, and he stood out like a sore thumb.

Also, he hit the nail on the head about the overblown media reaction to the answer phone incident. It was quite clearly private owned media trying to push their own agenda's in an attack against the BBC. I can't stand Daily Mail and pretty much all Murdoch owned news outlets.

Unfortunately his real talent (radio and television presenting) is being wasted and instead he keeps doing shitty comedy movies. Hopefully he realises this once he gets hollywood out of his system.

This interview is one of the funniest things that he has done.

Such wordiness!

Also, this should be watched again with the transcription turned on.

I saw a long interview with him by piers morgan on itv the other day, if its still there on itvplayer then its worth a watch, it was pretty interesting.

Here it is

I imagine uk only.

Yeah I remember watching that, and it was the first time I'd even heard of him. The guy is a compete twat.

Is it really that terrible that a share of the UK media are catering to an audience that don't want to pay the license fee?

Not that I am against the BBC or paying the license fee but I can see how some people who don't use a lot of the BBC's services think that they are being overcharged on their licence fee.

My partner used to work in the show business industry and has made tons of contacts and happens to be still friends with tons of people; musicians, comedians, stand up comics, rappers; of course we're talking local Canadian talent, not worldwide celebrities; but a big eye opener was when I met lots of those people and saw that how they are in 'real life' is COMPLETELY different than their public personas. A comedic duo that I completely hated turned out to be completely decent and normal, even super stern and serious (and one of them is a huge super hardcore gamer) while in the medias, they are acting like goofy guys all the time.

It was interesting to get some perspective; we all know that celebrities are normal persons too, but it's pretty shocking to see that each and everyone of those local celebs I met were 'characters' they played, pretty much. One of the local rapper guy is super huge here, and one time we went out to eat in a restaurant, and he had fans approaching him for photos and autographs, and it was hilarious to see him switch on and off his personality when they were fans around; he would be completely down to earth and he then he would switch to this loud jerseyshore type party guy when teens would come around.

I asked him about it, and it turned out that he was never much into the party hiphop bling bs, but it happens that this kind of persona worked and made him sell tons of records; so thats why he maintains this 'character' because this is what people expect when they meet him.

he actually think it's cheesy as fuck, but damn.. Dude is one of the biggest star in that kind of music locally and runs a huge studio and he's producing lots of artists now.
