Russian President Vladimir Putin has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Yes, you read that correctly.

A Russian group called the International Academy of Spiritual Unity of the Peoples of the World said Tuesday it had written to the Norwegian Nobel Committee nominating Putin for the prestigious award.

Its letter was received on Sept. 20. Putin's nomination missed the Feb.1 deadline for this year's award and will be considered next year.

The patriot group, whose members include current and former lawmakers, said Putin should be recognized for his efforts in averting a US military strike in Syria by brokering a deal for President Bashar al-Assad’s regime to hand over its stash of chemical weapons.

Ruling party lawmaker and well-known crooner Iosif Kobzon said Putin was more deserving of the award than US President Barack Obama, who received the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize.

“Our president, who is trying to stop the war and suggest a political solution, is more worthy of such a title,” Kobzon was quoted as saying.

Obama is “the person who initiated and approved such aggressive acts as Iraq and Afghanistan and who is preparing for intervention in Syria.”

Putin is a better candidate than Obama was when he won.
Except Putin has actually initialized a war, while Obama was a new President who had only just inherited some - and suggested that he was going to end them.

The truth is, anyone can be nominated for a nobel prize. Someone's just got to write a letter nominating them. You can't nominate yourself. Winning it, is a whole other story though. I remember seeing a Maxim article years ago suggesting that you should have a friend nominate you for a nobel prize then you can spend the rest of your life saying "I was nominated for a nobel prize." to girls in bars you want to impress.

Gotta say, if we are just looking at his actions recently, its not a bad selection. I'll have to second Dennis Rodman for his diplomatic work though, probably won't happen until he writes the tell-all book in a decade.

Not just anyone can nominate:

Qualified Nominators

According to the statutes of the Nobel Foundation, a nomination is considered valid if it is submitted by a person who falls within one of the following categories:
• Members of national assemblies and governments of states
• Members of international courts
• University rectors; professors of social sciences, history, philosophy, law and theology; directors of peace research institutes and foreign policy institutes
• Persons who have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize
• Board members of organizations that have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize
• Active and former members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee; (proposals by members of the Committee to be submitted no later than at the first meeting of the Committee after February 1)
• Former advisers to the Norwegian Nobel Committee )

That's still pretty broad, though. I assume this group counts as a peace research or foreign policy institute.

Putin to become first person to win both the Nobel Peace Prize and the somewhat less well known Ruthlessly Crushing all Dissent and Democratic Opposition Prize.

You fucking serious?

Did Georgia suddenly unhappen or have I missed something?

1) Georgia attacked Russian peace keepers killing 60 and starting the war
2) Russia limited the counter attack and did not overrun the whole country which it could have easily done. Wikipedia says the conflict cost 250 lives which is nothing in a full scale war.
3) Putin wasn't president then.

Yes you have missed something.

He left two months earlier.

I was wrong on that account.

edit: in any event it's only a nomination.

We have a Putin defense force on Gaf? lol.

Yes, very peaceful. I especially like that whole anti-gay law he passed and hasn't really done anything about the increased physical violence against gays that that law has caused.

How the hell did Obama win? Why does this go to actual deserving people like Bill Gates? 0_o

Barack H. Obama, the 44th President of the United States, had been in power for less than eight months when he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009. Among the reasons it gave, the Nobel Committee lauded Obama for his "extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples". Emphasis was also given to his support - in word and deed - for the vision of a world free from nuclear weapons.

Even before the election, Obama had advocated dialogue and cooperation across national, ethnic, religious and political dividing lines. As President, he called for a new start to relations between the Muslim world and the West based on common interests and mutual understanding and respect. In accordance with a promise he made during his election campaign, he set in motion a plan for the withdrawal of U.S. occupying forces from Iraq.

During his first year in power, President Obama showed himself to be a strong spokesman for human rights and democracy, and as a constructive supporter of the work being done to put effective measures in place to combat the climate crisis. This is in line with his appeal: "Now is the time for all of us to take our share of responsibility for a global response to global challenges".

The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced the award on October 9, 2009, citing Obama's promotion of nuclear nonproliferation and a "new climate" in international relations fostered by Obama, especially in reaching out to the Muslim world.

The Prize has meaning but it is a politcal award. President Obama had a very high approval rating in Europe, especially compared to his predocessor.

Also, remember the notable "speech in Cairo," a couple months before the Nobel winner was announced:
PRESIDENT OBAMA: Thank you very much. Good afternoon. I am honored to be in the timeless city of Cairo, and to be hosted by two remarkable institutions. For over a thousand years, Al-Azhar has stood as a beacon of Islamic learning; and for over a century, Cairo University has been a source of Egypt's advancement. And together, you represent the harmony between tradition and progress. I'm grateful for your hospitality, and the hospitality of the people of Egypt. And I'm also proud to carry with me the goodwill of the American people, and a greeting of peace from Muslim communities in my country: Assalaamu alaykum. (Applause.)
We meet at a time of great tension between the United States and Muslims around the world -- tension rooted in historical forces that go beyond any current policy debate. The relationship between Islam and the West includes centuries of coexistence and cooperation, but also conflict and religious wars. More recently, tension has been fed by colonialism that denied rights and opportunities to many Muslims, and a Cold War in which Muslim-majority countries were too often treated as proxies without regard to their own aspirations. Moreover, the sweeping change brought by modernity and globalization led many Muslims to view the West as hostile to the traditions of Islam.
Violent extremists have exploited these tensions in a small but potent minority of Muslims. The attacks of September 11, 2001 and the continued efforts of these extremists to engage in violence against civilians has led some in my country to view Islam as inevitably hostile not only to America and Western countries, but also to human rights. All this has bred more fear and more mistrust.
So long as our relationship is defined by our differences, we will empower those who sow hatred rather than peace, those who promote conflict rather than the cooperation that can help all of our people achieve justice and prosperity. And this cycle of suspicion and discord must end.
I've come here to Cairo to seek a new beginning between the United States and Muslims around the world, one based on mutual interest and mutual respect, and one based upon the truth that America and Islam are not exclusive and need not be in competition. Instead, they overlap, and share common principles -- principles of justice and progress; tolerance and the dignity of all human beings.
I do so recognizing that change cannot happen overnight.

The prize has meaning, how much is entirely subjective. I think Obama was deserving of the award, I'm sure there were others more deserving but the reasoning behind choosing him doesn't strike me odd anymore. It did come out of the blue and it was almost as if there were some thinking he could walk on water. Obama came into a tough set of problems, made healthcare a primary large-scale item, and got bogged down by opposition to his administration within -at most- 36 hours of his inauguration. How soon was it, in January 2009, that Mitch McConnnell came on TV and said the republican objective was to basically attack and block the administration? GIMTO? "Not in my backyard." "Kenyan Socialist..." "Rise of the Tea Party..." Bradley Manning was 2010, the cablegate leaks, and now the Snowden leaks; remember what was going on back in 2009. The (global) economy was teetering on the brink.

The Nobel Peace Prize committee means well. There was the hope a positive change could come. Not a magic carpet ride to utopia but significant steps toward better relations. It was probably too much false hope but I maintain a waning optimism.

I'm not going to defend the decisions of the Nobel Committee, its open to individuals to decide; this is just my perspective.

The Nobel comity is really weird, I was reading on their website about the time Hitler got nominated and the guy had to formally withdraw his nomination because no one got that it was a joke.

How so? This is a man who is totally ok with killing his own people if they don't follow his agenda. And don't get me started on his global politics.

Hold up. You mean like ordering drone strikes on your own civilians?

As for his global politics...how many wars is Russia currently engaged in? How many wars has Russia started over the last decade?

Putin doesn't deserve one but there is a bit of merit in saying that Obama was the worst choice for a peace prize in recent history. (Edit: Except for the EU)

Well, that part is pretty much right. But the Obama superfans on NeoGAF don't care.

But hell, would Putin even want the award? It's not exactly held in high standing these days.

Looks good on the shelf. That's good enough for him. I imagine that's how it started anyway.. Putin says he wants a Nobel Prize for his bookshelf, people make it happen.

Are you kidding me? New START would like a word with you. Ending the "Great Recession" is also a huge foreign policy crisis.

Uh, that's your counterpoint? The new START? Wow. At best it's largely irrelevant since both sides wanted it mostly for cost savings. It doesn't limit warhead sizes and many of the "limits" were not actually reached by either side anyways (namely, the number of nuclear capable platforms). Have you actually looked at the treaty? The White House has a nice blog post that even plays up the good points (http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2011/02/02/new-start-treaty-signed).

The cognitive dissonance is amazing, but you did put it in quotes so maybe you meant it ironically. Yeah that's going swimmingly, what with the slow to negative inflation adjusted wages, terrible population to employment ratio, and widening income gap (GINI). Who is actually seeing this amazing recovery that's coming any day now and is constantly being threatened by every flutter in the financial sphere "just as it gets started?"

Well..since they gave Obama one the award kind of lost it's meaning. After that you can easily hand them out for shit and giggles.
