Truthfully Russia is more or less a Failed Democracy. It never really managed to get free of its Soviet Past and now people look back on the Soviet Union as if it was an amazing time because they were powerful and feared and people think their lives were so much better off.

Russia is falling backwards. There are plenty of people who don't want to go back to the Soviet days but they are drowned out by the Elderly etc. who do and you can't really fight the system because if you pose a big enough threat its off to Prison with you. Its similar in Ukraine with the protestors. Vast Majority are just old folks who long for the glory days of the USSR and are ready to throw their kids and grandkids futures under the bus to relive the USSR once more

My politics lecturer joked that the LD party was neither Liberal or Democratic. They were the first independent political party set up in Russia, back in 1990 when the Soviet Union still existed, and Zhirinovsky has been in charge of it since the beginning.
