Columbia Pictures has set an untitled comedy that will star Sacha Baron Cohen as master detective Sherlock Holmes and Will Ferrell as Watson, his crime-solving partner.
Etan Cohen ("Tropic Thunder") is writing the script, and Judd Apatow and Jimmy Miller will produce.

The comedy is inspired by Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes tales. Though the thrust is different, the Baron Cohen-Ferrell pairing is the second major studio project featuring the supersleuth, as Warner Bros. is prepping the Anthony Peckham-scripted drama "Sherlock Holmes" with director Guy Ritchie.

The Col project reteams Baron Cohen and Ferrell, who played rival racecar drivers in Columbia's 2006 hit comedy "Talladega Nights," which Apatow and Miller also produced.

"Just the idea of Sacha and Will as Sherlock Holmes and Watson makes us laugh," said Col co-prexy Matt Tolmach. "Sacha and Will are two of the funniest and most talented guys on the planet, and having them take on these two iconic characters is frankly hilarious."

Baron Cohen, who most recently starred in "Sweeney Todd," has been filming "Bruno," based on his character creation, for Media Rights Capital, with Universal Pictures distributing domestically.

Ferrell, who just wrapped "Land of the Lost" for Universal, will next be seen starring for Col in "Step Brothers." That film reteams him with "Talladega Nights" co-star John C. Reilly, director Adam McKay and producers Apatow and Miller.

I have a hard time seeing Ferrell as a sidekick character without taking too much of the spotlight, but i'll wait and see

Since this guy did Idiocracy and Tropic Thunder (which is sure to be AMAZING. I'm seeing it next week), I'm sold. Sounds great.

I don't mean to alarm you but you have dogs on your face
It's being written by someone who works a lot with Mike Judge? Starring Sacha B Cohen?

Damn, I'm intrigued...

Sid and Marty Kroft were raping us.

I'm a big Will Ferrell ho so this is interesting to me. Plus I've been on the Sasha Cohen train since the UK Ali-G days. Cautiously optimistic, and fuck the inevitable haters.

Interesting Cohen is teaming up with Ferrell again, obviously they must be pretty close. Now if only we can get Larry David and Cohen in something....

I'm intrigued to see him as a #2, to be honest.

Even if this does sound like a horrible idea for a movie.

Although Doyle's stories were centered on the escapades of Holmes, Watson was the storyteller, and everything was filtered through his eyes, so arguably they are equals.

Sherlock Holmes is one of my favorite literary characters ever, if this is actually faithful to the source material it could be great and really funny.

Wouldn't be the first one.

See: The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes, Without a Clue, etc.

Exactly. Without a Clue was great fun:

I'm a big Sherlock Holmes fan and I loved it.

Hopefully this new one will be good too, and I'm sure it will about a billion times better than whatever Guy Ritchie is pulling out of his arse for his Holmes film...

I recently read a bunch of the Holmes stuff, and I was curious what the better TV/movie adaptations are. Can anyone here help me out?

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes TV show is probably the best and most faithful adaptation, recreating the written stories and even going as far as to re-use dialogue from them. Plus Jeremy Brett is excellent as Holmes.

Which books did you like? I just read The Hound of the Baskervilles, which I'm taking as Doyle's last hurrah at the behest of fans and publishers. I enjoyed it.

Have you seen The Private Life? It's quite good. Billy Wilder and all that, you know.

The Jeremy Brett ones are great and easily the best.

But you haven't lived until you've seen Peter Cushing do Holmes.

This one won't be faithful to the source material at all.

The one that's being directed by Mr. Madonna will be, however. That one is being described as a Casino Royale style Holmes reboot that spends a lot of time on Holmes himself such as his bare knuckle boxing.
