Is it really necessary that he does? Most singing I see in movies uses a different voice than the actor. I mean, if Michael J. Fox isn't expected to sing as well as fictional nobody Marty McFly, should we really expect Sacha Baron Cohen to match one of music's most well-known voices? Surely there's a lot of recorded audio material for them to work with.
Not really necessary, but most of the musical biopics have the actors recreating the musicians' magic. For example, Val Kilmer in The Doors, Jamie Foxx in Ray and Joaquin Phoenix in Walk the Line have done a spectacular job, and most of the anecdotes of people in the recording room felt disturbed by the pitch perfect emulation by these actors. Granted, Johnny Cash and Jim Morrison maybe slightly easier to pull off than Freddie Mercury simply due to Freddie's incredible range. If they simply use recorded stuff of Queen, then critics will point this as SBC's shortcoming as an actor.

Did anybody see Control? The actor used his voice and it added so much more to the movie I thought, even though he couldn't replicate Ian very well.

Honestly within the era of Queen they're working with the vocal range of Cohen won't be so much of an issue (he sang plenty high in Sweeney Todd) so long as the performance is good. Queen is way better live than in the studio (IMHO) because Freddy and the band pour so much raw energy and charisma into their shows.

If they were doing stuff off of Innuendo or The Miracle or something Cohen would be fucked but they won't be touching any of that.

If he does pull it off, at least they can follow it up with a Queen + Sacha Baron Cohen tour.

I can't think of anybody better to play him.

I wonder who they will get to play the rest of the band though. Likely unknowns.

I know - they could get Brian May to play Brian May!

Wow, I like it. I'm a big fan of anything SBC does after Da Ali G Show and this is so crazy that it might work.
I think he will do good, he's a very dynamic and interesting guy.

I'm not sure if anybody can elaborate on this, but apparently there was a script floating around for the past couple years about Mercury. Supposedly it took place over the course of one day before the Live Aid gig. From what I read it was a hot script that never got picked up.

I just saw this... I squealed I'll admit it.
From what I read the movie would possible lead up to the 1985 performance dubbed the greatest live show ever by many people. I thought about it and I'm for ending the movie without a sad third act. I would rather see it done as a celebration of Freddie!

I like how in a thread about Freddie Mercury, people posted pics of both Ali G and Borat, but not Bruno, the gay character.

I'm just excited they're making this movie at all. I also think Sacha could do either a really great job or just waste it. If only Daniel Day-lewis was a little younger he would be perfect. Even if he did it today it would be great.

I think most my excitement for this movie all lies on who is hired to direct it.

Bruno looks nothing like Freddie Mercury?

Wow, after years and years of hype, it's finally becoming a reality. I cannot wait to see SBC do this. Huge fan of both Queen and Sacha.

Work is now fully under way for the much-vaunted feature film on the life of Freddie. Peter Morgan has delivered a first draft of the movie, which everyone is very excited about, and Sacha Baron Cohen is chomping at the bit to get into the role, in a way which certainly would delight Freddie ! The whole team now working on preparing for a shoot later this year, and a release in the late Autumn of 2012. We are also laying the foundations for WWRY THE MOVIE, and again, we already have a great script for it from Ben.

IT'S HAPPENING PEOPLE!

Probably because Ali-G and Borat were massive hits.

I always thought this guy looked more like Freddy Mercury.

Seriously though, go to Google Images and search for "Bennet".

I found this hottie:

And there's quite a few more.

Calling it: Huge turn of events, Sacha wins an Oscar for this and everyone starts to appreciate his talent as a serious actor. He gets into more serious roles but still does the funny stuff on the side.

At least it's not Russell Brand.

He's too busy preparing to be Mr. Meeker in Rentaghost, isn't he? (if anything he's more a Timothy Claypole, and barely fit for THAT role).

This (Cohen) is a great choice. I'm also really happy when Russell Brand isn't in something, so this works out doubly great! :lol
