Saga Frontier

I tried playing this seven years ago and failing horribly (nonlinearity kicked my ass lol.) Now I'm buying it again for shits and giggles (and because I downloaded the music and love it.) Any tips to make me suck less at it, given the game IS confusing?

Beating all the quests in SaGa Frontier will be one of the most frustrating tasks, ever. Prepare for some hard times.

And look for my username!

I played through the majority of Saga Frontier (and Romancing Saga II/III) without a FAQ. It's definitely doable but takes awhile.

heh, well, I played through some of RS3 without one... but dear god I wouldn't want to try figuring out what the hell to do in saga frontier without a FAQ for sure.

SaGa Frontier music definitely kicks ass.

In fact, the entire game kicked ass. Though I didn't care for its sequel or Unlimited SaGa too much.

Start with one of the more straightforward characters. T260 would be a good bet; you could also do Red. Blue and Lute are probably bad picks because they have really non-linear quests.

Oh, and get Gen on your team whenever you can, 'cause he's pretty awesome.

....I still love this game, dammit

Someone told me that Matsuno (of OgreBattle, FFXII fame) did a SaGa game...any truth to this?
Don't think so. I could be wrong but the only titles he's done for Square are FFT & FFT-A, Vagrant Story and now FFXII after they gobbled Quest up.

I love Saga Frontier, played it for weeks on end when I got it, so long ago...

It's crucial to start with an accesible character and get to know the world that way, makes finishing the other stories a lot more enjoyable. As mentioned above, T260 would be my first choice. Then you can go on to the other characters.

I made it through most of the game without help, but Asellus's quest with the semilinear event triggers was too much.

Amelia, Red, and T260G have the best quests, as they are more linear and easy to follow. My personal favorite, however, was Lute's, as his only goal is to get strong enough to beat his final boss, who he can challenge minutes into the game. Consequently, he was the only character that I was able to experiment with enough to actually create an original fighter (Swordsman with high holy magic skill to get the Light Sword spell which made one of the most powerful swords in the game, but was only learned by my magic users in other cases).

Red/Alkaiser and T260G are also some of the most fun characters to use because of their very cool abilities. They also have decent stories.

Bleu is cool late game, but his quest is repetetive if played late in.

Riki is the worst character in the game, due to the fact that most of his forms are very weak. A Plot twist at the end made it almost impossible to win for me.

Asellus has a terrible quest with a promising story that has some very unsatisfactory endings possible.

The developer's room is cool when you beat all seven quests, but it is not worth the sheer repetition, as you will repeat about half of the optional quests every time.

That said, the fluctuating level of challenge actually provided some very satisfying battles when I conquered an enemy that should have been too strong for me and found weapons that were far above my general party strength. I do have some very good memories of the game, including the awesome 5 character combo hits against Red's final boss.
