Sounds more like seeing you can change on your TV than anything else. Nothing about an app on a tv inherently gives a better picture.

Depends. Likely DRM related.
Try Nvidia Shield. That will give you the best picture, and you can disconnect your TV. Apps will likely be updated long after TV ones are abandoned too.

I guess using a different DNS like Adguard should get rid of (most) ads
