San Andreas PC: Getting a controller to work on it?

I've been bugging people at SA and Gamefaqs about this too but haven't gotten any fruitful responses yet. Has anyone managed to successfully map all the controls of this game to a pad yet? When I try to play it with an Xbox controller I lose my right analog stick and D-pad (goodbye aiming, gangs, and finishing certain missions to get out of LS), and my PS2 controller loses both sticks (presumably because my adaptor sucks.) The game's a little complex for me to play with a board and mouse, so I'd really love to know if there's a solution

Which controller are you using? My Logitech Rumble Pad 2 worked perfectly with III and Vice City on PC, so I assume it should work well with San Andreas.

Just buy the xbox version.

The allure of no loading and a draw distance to die for (once I drop $200 on a new video card, anyway) is too great. I'se must preservere.

And I'm just using a normal Xbox (with a joyboy 9)/PS2 controller (with a generic adaptor). Haven't had a PC pad in years

True, I agree that will be cool. I wonder if you need a controller app to remap your sticks and buttons. I'll see if I can find the one I used a while back.

I certainly don't want to dictate your preference, but I am confused. Based on GTAIII (I didn't play the other 3D GTAs), I would think that a keyboard and mouse would be much better for control, considering all the shooting, etc.

Keyboard and mouse sucks especially for driving and flying.

After getting another PS2 adapter, I found out that turning on the analog solves the right stick problem, but now I have to figure out the d-pad...

alot of problems with gta sa pc and ati catalist 5.5 drivers. game keeps freezing on me, and the heathaze is messed up.
hope theres a fix soon

I'm considering going out and getting the PC version. The XBX version, I can't read the fucking minimap. I keep crashing into shit trying to see where the goddamn icons are when I'm driving. I can't believe they let you turn it completely off, but don't give an option to make it bigger.

I refuse to sit 2 feet in front of the TV to play the damn game.

I've been playing fine with mouse/kb so far. Driving isn't so bad, but I can imagine flying will be an annoyance. I love having mouse look to turn the camera while I drive.

However, I think I'm gonna have to get the Xbox version, because it runs awfully choppy on my stone age machine. I'm over the min requirements just barely and I have to play on low detail at 1024x768 with 3 bars viewing distance. It dips to around 10 fps during a drive-by or big firefight.
