The Padres have a PR problem on their hands after a mixup during the national anthem for Saturday night's game against the Dodgers.

There were 100 members of the San Diego Gay Men's Chorus on the field to sing the anthem, but a woman's voice — believed to be that of Friday's anthem singer — was played over the PA system while the men stood on the field.

The Padres issued a one-paragraph statement during Saturday night's game to apologize for the incident:

“This evening, during the pregame ceremony, a mistake was made in the Petco Park control room that prevented the San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus from performing the National Anthem as scheduled. We apologize to anyone in the ballpark who this may have offended, and have reached out to the Chorus to express our deep regret for the error.”

On Sunday morning, Bob Lehman, executive director of the San Diego Gay Men's Chorus, issued a lengthy response calling for an investigation into the matter:

"What should have been a night of joy and celebration at Petco Park last night, instead turned into a nightmare raising serious questions about homophobia within the San Diego Padres organization and its relationship with the LGBT community.

"Before the start of the last night’s San Diego Padres game, 100 volunteer singers of the San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus took to the field to proudly sing the National Anthem. Instead, in front of the large crowd gathered for the LA Dodgers game, the San Diego Padres played the recorded voice of a woman singing the anthem.

"No attempt was made to stop the recording and start over. No announcement of apology was made to the singers or their friends and families in the stands. No attempt to correct the situation occurred other than to force the 100 men to stand in the spotlight of center field for the song’s duration and then be escorted off the field to the heckles of baseball fans shouting homophobic taunts including “You sing like a girl.”

"This incident followed several days of troubling comments and behavior within the San Diego Padres organization. Three days before the game, San Diego Padres representatives aggressively sought to prevent singers from performing the National Anthem unless they purchased a ticket to the game—even if they did not plan to stay for the game—which was not part of any previous discussion or written or verbal agreement and would have cost the small, community-based non-profit thousands of dollars. The demand eventually was rescinded on Friday following repeated complaints made by SDGMC and San Diego Pride to San Diego Padres management.

Some of the allegations in the article is troubling like the booing and hurling of homophobic slurs by some fans but I'll withhold judgement until it is corroborated by other people. This incident happened during Out At The Park event, an official San Diego Padres event promoting LGBT Awareness.

Seems like a totally innocent accident IMO. Like, wow, what a super unfortunate and not at all intentional mistake.

I don't want to point fingers but this story wouldn't exist if those gay people had stayed home. Just saying, you know?

Errr...who are these "representatives" and why would they try to fuck up their own sanctioned event?

Apologize by having them back asap.

Why even invite them in the first place then?
Just to embarrass them?

Horrible, horrible act, I certainly never expected this in US Pro sports.

forget playing the wrong file, why would they play anything at all? the point of having singers sing the anthem...is to sing the anthem.

100 People Chorus. That's a lot of Microphones, wires and tech you need to amplify their voice through the whole stadium. A recording is not uncommon in this circumstance.

You still play the song over the PA, sometimes with backing

Also, this.

Yo know what's a good way to say " I'm sorry " ? Invite them back with their families and have them sing the national anthem. And don't screw up this time.

^This. It's not like there aren't enough games in the season.

Seems like a big goof up honestly. But man those fans were assholes.

That this happened, that no immediate fix or apology was made, and that there was what seemed like attempts to block their presence, makes SDP look super dodgy.

Where are you getting this information?

For an event intended to promote LGBT people, something like this would have, to anyone with sense, logically lead to the singers not being able to perform.

They tried to force the singers to buy tickets to the game before this thing happened?

Either the Padres are cheap or they're assholes. Maybe both.

This combined with the anthem seems like petty revenge.

Well, I don't think that is entirely unreasonable based on the quantity of individuals on the field. I'm also not positive how it would cost them "thousands of dollars".

The fact they were all on the field and assisted by management leads me away from that logic.

They were on the field yes, but as the end of the paragraph states, only after they forced the SDP to back off with respect to the tickets.

Also, I'm not exactly knowledgeable about ticket prices, but if there are 100 tickets purchased, the tickets could each be as cheap as $20 and thus cost them thousands of dollars.

And 'mechanical failure' is exactly a perfect excuse to give yourself plausible deniability.

No worries. Padres are bottom of the barrell. Unless you are seeking a particular viewpoint, I'd be shocked tickets would be going for much higher than $5. Due to that reason, I could see them being cheap when they are talking about realistically 100-200 individuals from the organization showing up.

I think the act itself is largely falling on a particular person if there was malice. I seriously doubt this was a collaborative effort from the top.

$5.00 tickets? That certainly does make it clearer why they were as desperate as they were.

I've always found it really weird that there are singing groups exclusively for gay men.

I imagine part of the reason was because many male-only choruses were established by religious organizations and you cannot be a member if you were an out gay male for obvious reasons.

Did this the day before Milk's birthday, and weeks away from Pride month too. Shameful behavior all around from the team, and they have to do a lot to make up for this (they won't)

I mean, it could well have been an accident, but I'd still question the judgement of an entity not capable of realizing during something as usually long as hell as the anthem that this would be a real problem if not rectified.
