Make sure to dress appropriately

Joking aside, my wife and I took a trip there years ago around this time and were shocked at how "cold" it was. It was in the 50's and 60's in July.
I'm from Wisconsin and always assumed all of California was warm - especially in July, but we ended up having to buy sweatshirts as we had brought mainly shorts/t-shirts.
We did go to Napa one day and that was certainly hot as fuck, but that was well outside the city.

Have a great time!!

Some of that....and whatever my friend wants to do.
Well it's worth doing the night tour of Alcatraz, if it's available. That might be a seasonal thing though, not sure. If you have an interest in science, the Exploratorium is kinda cool. It's geared towards kids but there's all sorts of stuff to try out even as an adult. I went when they were serving booze there for an "adults night" and had a blast.

Golden Gate park is big, cool to see. They have a bunch of nice walking areas and the California Academy of Sciences in the center. There are often people with RC boats and those tiny sailboats on the little manmade pond thing in there. If you start in the end facing the center of the city, on the opposite end is Ocean Beach (what a name) with a nice view and the old bath houses. They also had fire pits you could sit at and light up a fire at one point, not sure if that's still available or not. Don't expect to swim anywhere in the ocean though, it's cold as fuck.

It's worth seeing Pier 39/Fisherman's Wharf, there's a lot of touristy stuff there. That should satisfy your souvenir and gimmicky restaurant needs. Make sure you try Trish's Mini Donuts.

Right now the Stranger Things Experience is going on, I haven't done it yet, but the gf and I are going out there to check it out one of these weekends.

You can go to Ghirardelli Square and get a free chocolate and do a tour. There's Twin Peaks which is a weird drive up, but it's a beautiful view of the city, especially at night. The Stinking Rose is a unique garlic themed restaurant, worth checking out.

I'll be honest, I don't live that far from SF, but I haven't been there in like a year due to COVID pretty much having everything closed down. When I was looking up a lot of cool smaller bars and restaurants, most of them seem to be shut down now, which sucks.

Japan Town

How is Japan Town? I live on the East Coast and haven't heard much about it but I was really impressed by SF's China Town when I went a long time ago. I'm interested in going to Japan but it seems like they will never reopen to general tourism.. obviously not the same thing but there are some incredible parks around the Bay Area that I'd like to visit also.

I stayed at the Zephyr hotel a few years ago. really nice!

We basically just walked to the wharf and ate there. Lots of good restaurants there!

I wasn't impressed with it. It's just shopping/restaurants, almost like a mall. But it's clean and condensed into one area. I like San Jose's Japantown better.

Chinatown has a lot more flavor and it feels less "produced" if that makes sense.

Ehhh. I've lived near it most of my life and can't think of anything to recommend. I probably take it for granted, but at the same time, it's just not that great.

Definitely bring a jacket/hoodie because once the fogs roll in, it can get super cold.

For eating, there are too many places in different neighborhoods to list. All depends on what you're looking for. Yelp is big here so this app will be your best friend. But some hot spots are the Mission District from really good Mexican foods to michelin star restaurants, North beach, Russian Hill, Marina district, Chinatown, Japantown.

For places to visit, all the major obvious spots are good. Checking out the sea lions at Pier 39, Right now it's good time to check out Whales where you can even see them from the Golden Gate bridge or from Chrissy Fields even. Right by Chrissy Fields, they just opened up Presidio Tunnel Tops so I would definitely check that out(I think they may have opened parts of it and will fully open next week). Also check out Sausalito after you cross the Golden Gate.

Avoid the Tenderloin unless you want to experience real life The Walking Dead.

Might as well use this same thread. Will have a 2 night layover in October. Plan to do some nice museums and restaurants. But now trying to figure our where to stay.

Got this from our concierge:

Please find attached two additional recommendations for your trip to San Francisco. Both of these properties have a more modern and youthful vibe.

However I want to make you aware that these hotels are closer to the infamous Tenderloin and Market Street regions. I was recently in San Francisco and would recommend avoiding these areas and staying nearer to Nob Hill if possible.

Last time I was there was some 6-7 years ago. Is Market even worse now? Back then it was a druggie zombie land, but not threatening

I stayed in the financial district not to far from union square. It was pretty clean there. I could walk out if my hotel and catch a trolley down to the riverfront pretty easily. I used Hotwire and got a 4/5 star hotel for 130 a night.

I would recommend going to Tartine to try the bread. It is amazing. To sit down they require a vax card.
