Smarting from a difficult financial quarter and earthquake damage at a major factory, Japanese conglomerate Sanyo has asked domestic employees to buy goods made by the company. Executives have been asked to buy about $20,000 worth of goods, while regular employees have been asked to buy $2,000 worth of goods. Sanyo, one of Japan's largest manufacturers of digital cameras, also lowered camera shipment estimates.

On Monday, the company reported a $170 million loss, compared with a profit of about $95 million, for the quarter ended Dec. 31. Revenue came to $599 million. Sanyo's earnings were hit by an earthquake in the Niigata region in October, which forced the company to suspend operations at its chip facilities.

Luckily I just got a new Sanyo HDTV (the one that's much talked about on avsforum.com) before they closed shop. ;)

Sanyo is a strange breed: very few of their products are of incredibly good quality, but most is lower-end, complete crap, and their build quality is sometimes horrendous. But they have the best remote control designs ever. :)

What do they make that's high quality? I'd be interested to know - I always like an underdog (Asus, Subaru, Tecmo)...

It's got HDMI, an HDTV tuner, great comments, good picture quality and it's a great deal. Available at Wal-Mart only unfortunately. It's incredible, I called today to their 1-800 line and the first option mentions for 1 to be pressed if you're a Wal-Mart associate. :lol

It's a little rough around the edges tough.

They also do many pickup heads and lenses for CD and DVD writers and readers. I think some PS2s have Sanyo lenses in them.

My Sanyo phone is a freaking rock compared to most of the other ones i've seen on the market. (ie, solid construction, great signal, no problems what so ever).

Oh yes they are, except that from what I have heard, the sound quality for some models is complete crap compared to others like Panasonic. Nothing can beat Nortel as for sound quality and telephones tough. ;)
