Funny, i was just on Google Labs a couple nights ago looking for new betas. It would be really great if they let you download scrollable maps to PDAs. i like how clicking on each step in the directions shows a little popup of that area. It would be extremely cool if you could actually take a virtual trip with this.

Edit: i emailed them with the suggestion to make the maps useable for PDAs with a "save for PDA option. It's already possible, it just requires too many steps to do it. Mapquests and others have a similar option, but the resulting maps are so small it's just not worth it.

I read the thread title and thought that Mapquest was closing down.

That was close.

yeah, I'd originally titled it "Mapquest is dead", but thought that'd be too misleading.

I really love this interface, being able to zoom in a drag to different destinations is cool.

I've been playing with this all morning and everyone seems to love it.

looks like google has another hit on its hands.

Holy shit... I typed in masturbation and one of the hits was the local strip club in miami! Teh awesome!
It's pulling the data for local places from the Google Local directory. Funny and somewhat scary how all this information is coming together.

Not funny or scary, just cool.

Scary? How so if anything so far they've worked on replicating and enhancing many of the services currently offered by yahoo... email... phone lookup... mapping, etc....

Yahoo does have real time traffic for Wash, DC right though.. so that's pretty cool too.

Very functional, and a nice interface. The local search is a great feature...now, if they would just implement something similar for GPS-enabled cell phones, I'd be happy. (Oooh, sounds like another thread.)

The only objection I have is that the output doesn't scale well for printing, and the route isn't highlighted in the printed output. (Well, to be fair, I've only tested it with our laser printer here, and it doesn't show up on black and white printouts. There wasn't any route on the color print preview, though, so I suspect it would be missing on a color printout as well.) Since my primary use of Mapquest is to generate printed directions for business trips, it's a dealbreaker until Google Maps implements something similar. Can't wait to switch over, though... :)

Fuck that is totally kick ass. Can't wait until they put Canada on the map!
The GTA is on it fine at least. I'm pretty sure the rest of Canada is on it as well.

It's cool and all, but why not allow for some sort of more specific address input? It doesnt accept quite a number of the ones I put in even though it seemingly should.

Your browser is not supported by Google Maps just yet. We currently support the following browsers:
IE 5.5+ (download: Windows)
Firefox 0.8+ (download: Windows Mac Linux)
Netscape 7.1+ (download: Windows Mac Linux)
Mozilla 1.4+ (download: Windows Mac Linux)

We are working on supporting Safari. Regardless of your browser type, you must have JavaScript enabled to use Google Maps.

We recommend you download one of the browsers above, or you can try to load Google Maps in your current browser.

come on google. some safari support would be nice.

Toronto works fine :D Thank you Google.

It's a great site. I just typed in a location where I'm heading to today and it worked great. Concise and quick.

Holy crap. Thanks! This is sooooo much better than Mapquest. Entering addresses is easier, draggable maps are awesome, and it's so much faster!

You're right! MapQuest is so dead.

Damn, this rocks. Anyone checked out the Keyhole Google Beta? Imagine this map tool integrated Keyhole! Now imagine pulling it up on your GPS enabled 4G cell phone and getting directions. It's inevitable! OMG!!!!1

they call me "Man Gravy".
great tool. I don't know what problems -jinx- or Meier were having, it's accepted every address I've tried and the route is highlighted when I print it out. I agree that a big problem is how poorly the map scales when you print it, but I'm hoping they can fix that. Otherwise, this tool trounces the piss-poor Mapquest system.

The draggable maps are definitely nice. I do like the lack of advertisements(compared to mapqueest). The local search is also nice, and I could see using google maps to find something locally.

But, as it stands now, I'll still use mapquest for directions.

I've been using Yahoo Maps for 2 years now...

I'd only say goodbye to all of them when one of the two happens:

1. GPS System in my car
2. GPS add-on for PSP (PLEASE, SONY, PLEASE)

Vancouver, Montreal, TO, Winnipeg (????) all seem to be there.

Edmonton and Calgary, no. Didn't bother looking into anywhere in Saskatchewan or in the Maritimes.

Whoops, my bad. I clicked on the maps, and noticed only USA seemed to be populated. This is even better now! ;)

Keyhole is great fun I actually took a tour through my life... city I was born in, towns I've lived in, schools, high school, college, first girlfriend, military bases I was stationed at... wow... I keep saying I'm gonna pick up a yearly subscription to it.

Wow, that's great. On Mapquest, a few or the roads around here in Greater Vancouver were missing or wrong, and it looks like they've fixed it.

Google is slowly but surely attempting to take over the Internet. And everyone said Microsoft was the only one trying to do it. Ha. Pretty soon there will be a Google web browser or something.

When you print in firefox, it doesn't highlight the route. In IE, it works just fine. This is surely something they'll fix.
