How do you even compromise on some stuff though? Like, there are people who want to take away protections from minorities and other groups like LGBT, why would you want to compromise there? Kim Davis was invited to that audience, there are those whose "compromise" puts people under others.

Where can I watch this? The live stream is off air and I missed it.

That moment when RBG hugged Obama a final time. I made an unnatural noise.

It's not just about compromising principles and policy, which I think is the distinction the President is trying to make. You can disagree 100% with someone without demonizing them.

Sure, but how long is the President going to make these calls for compromise and lament partisanship before rethinking his stance and beliefs on their effects on US democracy good/bad? Maybe it's rational and pragmatic for the electorate to grow more unanimous and he irrationally runs away from it instead of embracing and critically understanding what's fueling it.

Davis: I came to the SOTU to 'encourage' Christians
By Gregory Krieg | Tuesday, January 12, 2016| cnn.com

Kentucky County Clerk Kim Davis told a reporter on Tuesday that she made the trip from Rowan County to Capitol Hill for President Obama's State of the Union address to provide "encouragement" to "all Christians."

Briefly jailed last September after she refused on religious grounds to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, Davis, a born-again Christian, told AFP's Ivan Couronne her message was aimed at Christians "who want to stay and make a difference."

An aide to Rep. Jim Jordan revealed late Tuesday that the Ohio Republican's office had extended an invitation to the controversial clerk.

"Kim Davis used our ticket," a Jordan spokesman said. "Our staff heard from the Family Research Council that Ms. Davis and her family hoped to attend the State of the Union address and so we offered a ticket."

I watched the State of the Union address last night and while I believe we as a nation have come a long way the past few years, it is still very evident that we as a nation are still very divided, and to a fault. I also have an opinion regarding the SOTU itself.
First, it baffles me how we parade these folks in at the beginning of each SOTU. The announcement, at a circus performer level, introducing the President and his cabinet is absurd. We're unnecessarily putting these people on a pedestal with these grand entrances, that are beginning to equate nothing short of a WWE entrance. Yes, they are extremely high level officials but let us not forget, they're human just like you and I, and THEY work for us. Cut the grandeur and get down to brass tax.

Secondly, the total lack of respect and clear visual separation from all parties is saddening. I spoke to this a couple of years ago and I see no change. Democrats not supporting Republicans and Republicans not supporting Democrats. The total and complete lack of respect shown at these SOTU's and the smug faces seen throughout, is just down right sad. How can viewers of this nation have any faith that our government can get things done, when it is clearly expressed to the world, how uncooperative and uncaring folks are during a SOTU. Guess what, Republicans don't have all the answers. Guess what, Democrats don't have all the answers. Like all things in life, the answer/truth usually lies somewhere in the middle and compromises can be had.

Whether you agree with the President or not, he is correct about one thing he said... "change will not occur overnight". In my opinion, the real power of a nation comes from those who work together and stick together in the long term.
