SciFi's Battlestar Galactica: Official Thread

Too dire? Oh man, it's just getting started, and still isn't even at a Freespace 2 level yet. I'd dare say Galactica is better than 24 or LOST, but I have a soft spot for serious-tone scifi drama. The final ep is just...damn.

I sort of talked about this before when applauding the season finale, but the music towards the end is just awesome. Can't wait for the OST (although I see there is one already for the miniseries).

Belfast: I agree that a movie is basically not filling me with optimism (Firefly is such a bloody well designed universe I hate to let it go), but I don't think the real depression will set in until *after* we watch it. (probably doubly so if the dynamic duo over at paramount greenlights another Star Trek trashfest movie).

ManaByte: Was that the Zak episode? If so
I think the finishing touch is what will always make that episode stand out in my mind, where Adama seems to be all appreciative but then slams the engagement ring back on her finger before leaving the sick bay. Basically the ultimate way to illustrate "forgive, but not forget".

The opening theme for the US version is much much much much better than the one for the UK.

Holy frak. If they don't do a second season after that finale (I read the reviews), SciFi will face a backlash that would make the canning of Farscape look like nothing in comparison.

I like the dire-ness! They went 180 degrees from the classic show's cheesiness, and it works. My only complaint is more of a gripe than a legitimate issue; there are almost too many strong characters.

In a perfect world, we'd get Firefly and Battlestar. However, given the Scif Fi executive braintrust, we are more likely to see both left to rot whilst Chupacabra 8: Devil Hamsters gets the greenlight.

"You Can't Go Home Again" aired in the US tonight, and I thought the second half was better than the first half. I loved how it ended especially in light of the previous episode.

This show needs to die. This is all my room mate watches.

I'm about to indefinitely suspend his TV-watching privileges (on MY fucking TV!) :p

I started watching this recently and am really enjoying. I like how everything is very dire and desperate. I never watched the original or even knew anything about it. Good times!! Now I am obsessed with this and 24:):)

If you're watching the first season in the US DO NOT go into the Enterprise Cancelled thread because God's Hand went and downloaded the first season and spoiled the ending for everyone without spoiler tagging his post.

I hate that it's so much earlier in the UK, I have no self control so I went and d/l the first season too. :(

I have 3 eps to watch left. Great stuff, but my wife won't watch it with me, she says it's too depressing.

After hearing all the talk about this series I decided to start watching it. Since SciFi aired the first five episodes back-to-back this week I recorded them all and downloaded the mini-series so I could watch it all in order. I love the show so far and I'm glad that it will be coming back. I won't be downloading the other episodes, I'll just watch them on Friday nights. It's good to see that it being broadcast in October overseas and being available on the internet hasn't hurt the series' ratings here.

IGN FilmForce said:
SciFi Channel posted yet another solid night of ratings last Friday with a sizable portion of that due in part to Galactica. The episode, You Can't Go Home Again posted the highest ratings for the series to date, 3.2 million viewers. As a comparison, UPN's Enterprise, only managed 1.8 million viewers on the same night, leading some to speculate that both shows are trying to carve out an audience from a very finite number of viewers.

Tonight's episode was great! I can see why Baltar is the fan favorite in the UK. I loved the look on his face when he ran up the stairs at the end of the episode :lol

No more Mr. Nice Gaius! :lol :lol

Was I the only person totally confused by today's episode? Was the blonde Cylon girl actually there or are we supposed to assume that the Cylon ship that Starbuck brought back is somehow connected (by giving off a holographic image of her or something)?

A model of Number 6 was actually on the ship. Gaius pissed off Number 6 by yelling at her about the reilgious stuff and she sent the model of the ship to fuck with him until he "apologized".

i have never watched battlestar galactica before...

so...

is watching the miniseries... really a prerequisite to watching the show? or does the show give enough background from episode 1 to just watch like that?

(would it be like watching StarGate SG-1 pilot before watching the stargate movie?)

The miniseries is the first episode really. The first episode of the show picks up pretty much immediately after.

The always begin with a "previously on Battlestar Galacitca." So even if you miss an ep or two, they'll fill you in on the important stuff. Like the Cylons having a plan.

Mini Series spoilers.
Basicaly the cylons attacked. Mankind is running away towards earth. Gaius the scientist helped the cylons and is now insane, constantly seeing the cylon number six, who he helped. Agathon is trapped behind enemy lines. Colonel Tigh drinks and the President has cancer. That is essentially the mini series. If you love Scifi this is the best show in ten years. (Firefly aside r.i.p.) Watch it.

It's no more a big deal than watching sg-1 without watching the movie. Either way you don't miss that much.

There's some stuff in the later episodes that haven't aired here in NA that might be a little confusing without the miniseries, but it's nothing you can't get later after you watch it.

Hate to be picky, but it's cylons. Cyclons sounds too much like the aliens in Battlefield Earth. :|

Yep, just watched the whole thing and I"m just blown away by the quality of the show. Hell, I didn't even know that the old Apollo from the old show could act that well. Damn Hollywood and their typecasting. And that cliffhanger...just...wow. Anyways, bought the miniseries on dvd, and Ron Moore, in the commentary must've made 30 comparisons of his new show to how things are done on Star Trek.

I hear there will definetly be a season 2, though to be honest, I'm not sure how much of the material will last beyond a second season.

COCKLES

being watched
It's ambigious at the moment. Baltar could be insane. Or it could be a device implanted in his brain. There's a great episode later on in the season directed by Olmos, where he makes great use of No.6's legs in a under the table sweeping shot. Yeah...I can't blame Gaius for betraying mankind with those wrapped around me, imaginary or not. :lol

Galactica Returns This Summer

SCI FI Channel announced that the second season of its hit original series Battlestar Galactica will premiere this summer, with 20 new episodes.
The channel added that the entire ensemble
cast
will return for season two, including Edward James Olmos, Mary McDonnell, Katee Sackhoff, Jamie Bamber, James Callis, Tricia Helfer and Grace Park.
Also resuming their roles are executive producer and writer Ronald D. Moore and executive producer David Eick.

Galactica will resume production in Vancouver, B.C., in March and will again anchor the channel's SCI FI Friday block of prime-time original series.

The series, which premiered on Jan. 14, has been averaging over 3 million viewers per episode and has quickly become SCI FI's highest-rated original series and has received unprecedented critical acclaim. Galactica airs Fridays at 10 p.m. ET, part of the channel's successful SCI FI Friday lineup, which also includes Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis. Galactica ends its first season with a finale episode on April 1.

Its good to hear the entire cast is back, but what about the writers though ? Let's hope they come back as well .

btw i watched the miniseries as well as every episode and it's pretty good. Not up to TNG or SG1 quality.

The thing that bothers me the most is that it's more about the people than the story. A soap opera in space, so to speak.

What this means is that plots/story arcs feel a lot longer and are made to be a lot longer than they really need to be.

They should make the series like 5 seasons long. 4 seasons to get to earth and the event of earth being a super power... season 5 is earth vs the cylons! defeat!

Even if it's just sending a super virus to the core of the cylon's activity... it should take them about 15 episodes to have one made and delivered.

No, please not another Galactica 1980. That series was Battlestar Galaxitive.

Uhuhuhhhh

Yes! we found earth! *all actors suddenly morph into andromeda actors*

Now let's not visit earth! We must now allow the cylons to know they're there!

*cue non textured cylon CG characters, fan uprage and cancellation of the show*

I just finished watching the entire season.

I'm speechless.... I really don't know how to express my fondness for this show after seeing the season finale handled as beautifully as it was.

It would make more sense to let people watch the prologue (where the cylons make their first attacks). I mean... dam, that was the most awesome 2 (however long it was) hours of television i saw that whole year.

OMG that was hilarious! I remember going, "OMG how can they [SciFi] get away with showing that?!" I've never seen full out masturbation on TV before. D= Hahaha

Baltar: "So, what... can I do for you?"
Starbuck: "Well, for starters, you can zip up your fly..."

:lol

I feel kind of stupid asking this, but is Ellen a Cylon? I didn't quite catch the part at the end where Baltar said he would, "never tell."

Baltar didn't tell us.... that's what he meant by I'll never tell.. 6 asked him what the results were and he said, I'll never tell..

BTW what's the deal with 6 on the planet... was she having some kind of emotional response during the conversation about Boomer staying with the guy on the planet? I wonder if she's the 6 that is in contact with Baltar... it seems like emotionally the humanoid cyclons are all over the place... and I still have no inkling as to what their planet wide experiment on Caprica by letting the co-pilot and "boomer" run free is...

What was the point to tonight's ep anyway? Besides the fact that Baltar now is telling everyone they are green, Ellen might be a Cylon.....

DarienA, I'd love to explain some of it, but you really need to just keep watching. Lots of questions regarding the Cylons get some very unsettling answers (and even better, a whole new boatload of questions).

Without spoiling things down the line, think of your own answers to the following questions:

1. Who's side do you think Baltar is on now?
2. Doesn't Ellen seem like the perfect red herring? (Honestly, I hate the character, but well, you really need to keep watching)
