Scribblenauts Preview/Impressions Thread - You will say "wow." (see post #217)

I was under the impression the DS mic worked on syllables/syllable lengths to recognise words. I don't think that would work well for Scribblenauts.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong though.

Is Jackson still lurking around? I'd be interested in finding out the changes they've made (if any) for localisation. At a base level, a Brit means something very different to an American when they use the word 'torch'.
Let's not even get started on 'thongs'.

Oh yeah, so that when we wonder what object a word brings up we just type it in the Scribblepedia to quickly check it out, rather than typing it directly in the game to quickly check it out which could prove to be a far more tedious process.
I guess you never processed my sentence fully. The 'Scribblepedia' will just keep track of the words that you have already used (wish if I understand, the game is already doing) and just shows you the picture of the word and maybe a description.

Is the design document for this game the dictionary?
Yes, it actually is a big part of the GDD if Im to understand. This game probably has the biggest GDD in the world. :lol

I'm also interested in how stuff like 'porcelain' is handled. It's a noun, and it's not technically abstract, but it's most often used as an adjective. Where does that fit in? Do you just get a vase, or a sink, or something? Does it just not work?

I was wondering that too. Along with words representing multiple objects, such as "marble"--do you get marble rock or a playing marble?

For words representing multiple objects, you are given an option to choose which one you meant. So, assuming both marbles are in the game, a screen will pop asking whether you meant marble (rock) or marble (ball).

Just put in the pre-order on Amazon! Hope that helps you guys out a little bit. Time to go on blackout on this one, while still telling everyone I know who owns a DS about it.

an example from the video on gametrailers would be
Fan (person)
Fan (tool)

i found it neat that they went through the trouble of making a fan (person) when an object representing the word already exists

Man, if I was in contact with CS professors I would totally forward some videos to them, that's a good point. I was computer engineering so most of my professors leaned towards the electrical/embedded system side, but there were at least a couple who might love it. I'll post if anything comes of it. :D

Every single time I start a level I'm going to spawn three or four fanboys who will shower me with fame and praise when I finish a puzzle.

Can't remember if I said that one already or not...

This is the first DS game I've seen that makes me consider purchasing one.

Listening to Anthony Gallegos on the recent Rebel FM talking about what he was able to do with Scribblenauts was pretty damn awesome.

If you spawn gaffers they will probably go around and complain about bad art, sharp knees and generic art direction (like they always do with any game).
The only way to get rid of them would be spawning Bishop and a banhammer.

Or if you spawned Jackson, in which case they run away and buy five copies of Scribblenauts. Each.

hugely creative, quite cool technical feat, but game? thats a stretch. it certainly doesnt look fun to me :/

i'm afraid i'm the only one though (dont hurt me)

Don't worry, it'd be silly to expect that everyone would enjoy any one single game. :) I hope a lot of people will enjoy it, however.

By the way, for those who also preordered on Amazon -- do you not get a confirmation email until it actually charges you? I'm using an old email address but I thought it forwarded...I might need to figure out how to change my Amazon account email.

At least this game makes it easy to determine who does and does not have an imagination and/or inner child.

my inner child plays other genres :P

op_ivy said:
yeah, preferably ones with space marines. anything wrong with that?
Nothing 'wrong' per se, it just means you don't have an inner child, you have an inner teenager who doesn't have an imagination.

Because you don't have an imagination.

EDIT: removed
Hey, I'm trying to foster an attitude of niceness here. ;_; The game's not for you, but you can enjoy other games, right? And everyone here can spawn their zombies and Jacksons and get along, right? Riiiight?

*spawns flamethrower just in case*

*edit* Okay seriously. Good thread, carry on Halo wars elsewhere, guys. :|

:Motorbass said:
you can use those in the game.

so i can write space marine and watch the action unfold? awesome.

please dont respond to this, i'd like to leave with the last word

Jokey665 said:
responding because you don't want me to...

you are begging me to quote your avatar, arent you?

(i lack the imagination for anything more creative i suppose)

OK, legitimate question time: Can you spawn more than one of a single item at a time just by making it plural? i.e. the balloons + fan solution to saving the whale, instead of writing "balloon" repeatedly, would one be able to just write "balloons" and get multiple?

Or would writing a plural on some words end up with essentially different object (i.e. "Bee" yields a bee, "Bees" yielding a hive)?

Or some combination thereof?

If it's not already in, 'Banhammer' should be. You hear me, 5th Cell?! :lol

Yes, I would love a Banhammer :lol
Oh no, someone spawned by mistake the evil GAFfer Jocchan!

Now he'll start polluting the game with bad photoshops and unfunny jokes!

Spawning Bish + Banhammer...

Yeah, it worked!

We want PC Port!
This would be so awesome, mods and such. People could add extra words.

Besides my continual begging for a PC port, I just saw the movie Idle Hands and would love being able to type it in and a Hand starts crawling around killing people. I want this game, but I don't have the money for a Ds D:

GARDAMMIT!

Bar a few exceptions, I doubt plural words are going to be considered.

It's not like they would have many words left to add.

Someone needs to make another photoshop ad thread (like Ani's back when) with a focus on Scribblenauts a couple weeks before release.

Speaking of advertising, Jackson, will there be any sort of in-store demo available for Scribblenauts? I'm guessing that most places that have a DS sitting out (like Wal-mart) have some special demo cartridge stuck in it. If there was a way for stores to have Scribblenauts actually playable by people wandering through, I'm -guessing- that might help store sales.

Maybe they can put one in the Nintendo Channel too

Just the free mode, or like 5 of 220 levels?

I wouldn't even buy the game, then. I could just live off of that demo forever.

I don't really care about the levels, I just wanna spawn shit.

A demo on the Nintendo Channel wouldn't work. Even if they included a dozen out of the 220 available levels, people would just have fun messing with objects. Kiosk demos, on the other hand, would be much more useful thanks to the inherently limited time each customer would have to try the game.
EDIT: beaten.

Everyone would just paste screenshots of post #217 and call it a day :P
