Scribblenauts Preview/Impressions Thread - You will say "wow." (see post #217)

Does anyone know if there's a rotate/flip option while placing items? For most it wouldn't matter, but for something like a ramp or a cannon, can you flip it left or right? Can you drag a rope to be as long as you want when placing it, and pick what its ends attach to?

Also of note in the new video is that "Crate" spawned the same object as "Box" seen in a previous video. But what of "Cardboard Box?" WHAT OF CARDBOARD BOX?

i'm not sure.. but when it is destroyed it better turn into regular cardboard!

I believe the "crate" was larger than the "box".

If they ever released this for the IPhone, it would be the most popular app ever. It could work very well on the Iphone actually, and it would sell very well.

Eh... Image quality is ass, but I'm pretty sure they're the same size.

I saw on CO-OP that this game allows you to summon Cthulhu.

Pretty much 100%'d my purchase decision right there.
That got me too. :lol

I mean, you would assume that this game couldn't possibly be deep enough to write anything, and you'd have to try a couple of times and get more vague to actually get the game to work. When he summoned Cthulhu to kill that lion, though...completely blew me away. It'll be interesting to see people posting about what is/isn't in the game when it comes out.

After looking at both I'd say they are identical. But that makes sense. Crate and Box are synonyms.

After watching the video, some cool things I noticed:

-Destructible environments! Probably only select types, like sand, but still. I think the tree blew up as well

-Maxwell seems to be able to do certain things even if he lacks the tools. He lit the dynamite without the need of fire, for example

-That level with the cop/fireman/etc. is actually 1-1. No wonder it looks so simple, haha.

-Train can run without rails

-"Triggers" during levels will probably be what makes later levels so difficult. Things like the starite dropping down a level when you get too close.

Haha, I was wondering if you could do that just today. That's excellent, will buy.

Can't help but wonder what a pair of wire cutters would do on the trip wire (Presuming it's even something that can be interacted with beyond "running past this point causes this action to occur")

As I was checking Facebook, someone I didn't talk to about Scribblenauts yet updated their status with the 'FUCKING JUMPED ON A DINOSAUR TO RIDE ROBOT ZOMBIES' blurb.

Congratulations Feep, you have now officially spawned a meme.

I think Trains can run without rails in real life too, it just ruins the wheels.

Crate and box being the same makes me cry. No sneaking under cardboard boxes...no cutting them into normal cardboard...worst game ever! ;(

On a more serious note, a guy in my office just got little big planet, and it made me wonder again how many simple physics effects will be available -- pullies, catapaults, ropes, weights, and wheels.

You can probably summon it by typing 'cardboard box'. It is confirmed that item consisting of more than 1 word works too (such as 'ice cube' or 'fishing rod')

I don't think anybody has mentioned it yet, but Post 217 needs to be a bullet point on the back of the box.

-Use time travel to jump on a dinosaur and use it to kill robot zombies!

Also...

I was just thinking about this and I realized that there is a great way you could do a downloadable demo of this game without basically giving away the whole thing:

Just make it only accept words that begin with a single letter. Say, A.

This. Jackson, please make this happen.

Never have I been so interested in hearing about people playing a game before, and never have I been so anticipated for new videos for something that wasn't an established IP. I am definitely pre-ordering this to show my support and improve the financial commercial backing for this game. Anybody who thinks they could spend at least 10+ hours on this game (although I think most people could spend dozens) at the price of $30 should definitely pick it up, given that it's at least somewhat revolutionary. This excludes the amount of fun that there will be when showing it off to younger members of the immediate and extended family. Shoot, even my parents will be able to spend hours with this game.

This really will be a true casual/hardcore crossover title, and I hope GAF supports it with as many preorders as possible. I'm just waiting for that next paycheck! So pumped.

Just watched the 1up video... UGH... SO GOOD. I NEED THIS NOW!

I was at Toy's R Us today and I spotted Drawn to Life there for $10. I already bought this game at launch back in the day, but I figured I'd get another copy for two reasons:

1. I'm ALL about supporting 5th Cell and everything they do now.
2. When Scribblenauts hits shelves and ends up consuming us all, Jackson will sneak in and arbitrarily make himself the emperor of the world, and I figure a sealed copy of Drawn to Life will be about the highest form of currency available.

So I played the demo at e3. Some thoughts follow...

* The game DID detect MOST of my nouns. There were a few esoteric ones that didn't (and I wish I wrote them down so as to remember what they were), but all "fair" words did seem to be detected...

* I have some issues with the use of certain items, but I suppose that's part of the game's "puzzles"... trying to get a cat off of a roof, and "STAIRCASE" was too small, "CATAPULT" refused to shoot the cat (or myself), and "ELEVATOR" didn't reach. Yeah, I know, puzzles... but when you get to name your own word, you get a bit annoyed when logical puzzle solutions don't work due to varying interpretations of the various words.

* "GIANT SQUID" works well... and it tends to kill elephants.

If you post the words that didn't work, I'm sure they'll make it in to the final game.

This is my only *minor* concern, which is forgivable for a game so ambitious.

I can only hope this game is expounded upon with adjectives in XBLA/PSN :)

Yeah, but then again, that makes things a little more difficult. If everything in the game went by your own personal definition of the item, it would probably make the game insanely easy.

And that's going to happen with most interactions, I suspect. Items will be of a fixed size, and physics may be very restricted going by what you say. If a catapault can't lift a cat, I'm guessing there won't be any seesaw/prybar/whatever related physics at all.

It's because catapult shoots rocks when you use it, like a catapult should. :)

And yes there's full physics in the game, which is insane for a DS game.

Why does it look boring?

I like Puzzle games, don't get me wrong, I just don't like the idea of having to type in every single thing I need to use.

Would be cooler if you could just say it, or draw it in, you know? Typing seems like...it's a game from the 90's I guess I don't know. Even LBP had a dropdown menu of all the little things you could add. I like that idea much better.

Again guys, just my opinion.

:lol awesome. I can't believe GAF is the fourth link down. Though if you just type "i fucking traveled through time" this thread is the first link.

So remember, everybody, if you're at someone's house and you want to tell them about Scribblenauts, just go to Google and type "i fucking traveled through time". Feep's post will be the first thing that comes up. (It's faster than logging into GAF and using its search =P)

But a dropdown menu of everything that exists would be too long, you know?

Ebola is in the game, which is awesome because it's my favorite disease, and those infected with it are none too pleased, wobbling around and looking quite ill. However, when I gave someone Swine Flu, they not only got ill like the Ebola-ridden bastard, but they splayed out on the ground as well. Am I to think that the weakass swine flu is somehow more debilitating than Ebola?

Also, the mean 'ol Loch Nes Monster scared by Big Foot.

This is your third or fourth reply to me. You're great. XD Catapaults should shoot cats as WELL as rocks, though! (Seriously, though, I assume you mean that it's classified as a "weapon" that shoots projectiles rather than an interactive physics object that shoots ANYTHING, and that kinda makes sense)

As long as there is SOME way for me to get a fulcrum under a plank and have it act as an impromptou catapault, I'll be happy. If there isn't, I'll probably still be happy. :P I don't expect everything to work, but I'll definitely not object to pleasant surprises!

Also, I'm looking forward to more of those videos dropping this week!

Ah. So you have an issue with the spelling/word mechanic, and would prefer a drawing/voice recognization mechanic instead.

Fair enough, I personally think it's a trivial issue and would lead to technological issues on the DS, but I can respect that.

Insane as shit, no doubt, for the DS. I'm floored. Do items have a simple 1-5 rating on many aspects, though (not a bad thing)? Found it strange that a few balloons attached to a whale while including a fan would make it travel on a horizontal plane. Was this what was used to compensate for the DS' limitations and should we expect this sort of occasional compensation due to inadequate hardware? A small price to pay either way, no doubt.

Just wondering what to expect from the final product, if possible.

Speech or drawing recognition for over 10,000 nouns is impossible with this hardware, not to mention the amount of work involved. And a drop down list is ridiculous for obvious reasons. Little Big Planet isn't even close to the breadth of items available in Scribblenauts, as ridiculous as that sounds.

Folders, keywords, icons, there are plenty of ways to include the option for people who want it.

I like the art direction and the idea behind the game, just not the method in which you access the mechanics.

I think when I said it looks 'boring' it might have been taken out of context a bit and I should explain, the input method may take more time or become more monotonous than the usual folder/menu method. That's all I meant.

I hope you guys enjoy it, that's what matters. It looks very innovative, and I'm not speaking ill of the game at all, simply voicing my opinion about the menu system.

Peace :)
