Holy shit!!! Congrats Jackson!

I haven't read the whole thread so there may be an answer for this but where will the difficulty come from in this game? If you could summon any object wouldn't in make it extremely easy?

FuzzyDunlop said:
well a doctoral thesis is usually an essay although you could consider it an "idea".

Green is definitely a noun. Want me to use it in a sentence? (hint: just did)

pate is actually the crown of the head, and a flagella is a tail, only if youre a retard and failed high school bio.

Looks like i got you on quark though eh? Personally id love it if when you created a quark the whole game crashed because you created energy and violated a fundamental law of thermodynamics

Yeah, I guess I didn't think about a golf course green :lol Well, then it's probably in the game as well.

I guess pate would summon a scalp then, but then again it might consider that word too "mature", and flagella, well who knows.

I wonder if Jackson's crew actually knows that a single quark can't exist by itself? You hear that Jackson? Make the game so it spawns a quark cluster/group or you might KILL US ALL!

No. You still have to combine objects in useful ways. Just because you can summon god, it dosen't mean he's going to climb a tree and get a starrite for you. Also, if you want to get achievements and such you have to summon par or under.

The more complex levels have things like unbreakable ground and switches that move the starrite and other hazards we haven't seen yet.

Yes, if you play it with the intention of finishing the levels in the easiest way possible, this game won't last you that long

The challenge of the game is set by yourself.. how far can you push your imagination to find new and creative ways to solve the levels

batbeg said:
This with your post in the Gamespot thread... as has been said, pay attention to the rules. The game isn't promising you everything in the universe, it's supplying a set of rules you have to adhere to. It just happens those rules allow more creativity than any other game, ever.
blah blah blah read the rules, i know. youre about 10 posts too late on that one guy. although im flattered and mildly turned on that you keep tabs of my posts

You still have nothing to say for the fact that it will probably give synonyms instead of what I actually ask for. for some things its acceptable (ie "car" and "automobile"). flagella and tail is one i just came up with. im sure bigger stretches will be made.

FuzzyDunlop said:
what happens when you write something intangible, like "love". or what about large objects, like "".

note that just because these may/may not fit in the rules do not necessarily mean they won't be in the game, it just means you shouldn't expect them to

Africa - proper noun
Flagella - (firstly it'd be in the game as flagellum, unless it was going to spawn a few), though since it is at a microscopic level, they could technically insert it as a blank object if it makes you happy :P, not sure how you'd expect this to be implemented in any way other than just dropping a microscope for your character
Pate - this is the top of the head, now i'm not sure how far 5th cell are planning to take things into the 'body parts' realm, since it is E rated.. so i don't know
Green - if it is the colour, it is not a concrete object... if it is the part of the golf course/referring to a grassy valley, then i'm not sure (this is a better question regarding how it will deal with big objects - better than your previous suggestion of 'africa')
doctoral thesis - most likely looks the same as "thesis" which will most likely be in the game as a stack of papers
quark - same as flagella really.. if they were going to implement either of these, they'd have implemented things like protons, electrons, atoms, etc.. i just don't see how they can noticeably add things like that to a reasonable scale
time - I'm not sure what kind of time you referring to, but the only 'time' i can think of is not a concrete object, but rather a unit of measurement.. so if that is what you mean, it'd be like writing "centimeter" and expect to see something

etc etc. im sure for pate it will give the same result as head, and flagella the same as tail. time is probably a watch. ehh. If im wrong i will eat my words, buy the game twice, and recommend it to all my friends.

I'm basing my responses on this:

So I'll restate the rules here...

Concrete Objects Only
No Proper Nouns
No Copyrighted Words
No Adjectives
E-E10 rated words only - this means No Vulgar/Offensive/Lewd/Drug/Alcohol related words

Other than that... it works

As you said at the end, since the team may not want to implement the exact meaning of those objects, they may end up just putting them in as close-as-possible synonyms in order to have them at least listed.. although they may just come up as objects that use the same base word, for instance, i'd expect flagtellum to come up as a whip rather than a tail

It's actually pretty easy to keep up with the posters that sound as retarded as your typical IGN/Gamespot forum poster, because there's only a handful of them on GAF.

What I love is you have this self-assured "HA! I beat you bitches!" when you have neither played the game, nor had it confirmed whether or not the words you've mentioned are in or not. You think it'll just always give you synonyms? We've already had it confirmed there are tens of thousands of words in this game, so there's no point in operating on "it will probably give synonyms". All previews and impressions point to the game being surprisingly sophisticated and precise.

Can we write "golf club" and "golf ball" and start playing golf? How about "tennis racket" and "tennis ball" to hit a starite out of a tree? Will there be such interaction between such items?

Probably.

The racket should be able to hit the ball anyway.

how about you reply to my post, rather than continuing a useless and unnecessary argument.. unless that is what you came here to do

I don't get the appeal of trying to "stump" the game with abstract nouns. Maybe Jackson's wording was too...confusing, for people? If you can hold an item in your hand, or at the very least touch it, then it's probably in the game. Intangible nouns like "green" (unless golf green makes it) and "time" you obviously cannot touch and therefore would not be in the game.

You know those types of people who try and find loopholes in hypothetical situations? You know, the guys who say "I WILL BRING A HOLLOWED OUT BOOK FULL OF SUPPLIES" when you ask them what 3 books they'd bring on a desert island? Yeah, that's the impression I get from those sort of people who try and make those arguments.

I will say that most likely things on the molecular and microscopic level will exist in some fashion. People have successfully spawned ebola and the swine flu, for instance.

Ugh, it's like you try to spew the most meaningless crap imaginable. The games mechanics are that it will produce the written objects, therefore until we have irrefutable evidence that it is substantially incapable of fulfilling this, the game has you beat. The benefit of the doubt should automatically be given to it, but even if it's not, there are already plenty of impressions abound of people trying to stump the game only to find it has everything they attempt to stump it with. For example, Joy*Stiq produced a stanchion, a lutefisk, and a narwhal in their attempt to find words which they wouldn't have implemented. The only word they didn't get was "plum-bob" which they have since been assured will be in the final product.

Of course, I doubt a lutefisk will actually show up. It'll probably just be a goldfish. And a narwhal? Ha! It'll probably just have an average whale.

Of course, your posts will definitely show a sign of ignorance.

It's difficult to know how you'll be able to interact with the fish, that Joy*Stiq article mentions Santa eating their lutefisk. I doubt you'll be able to chop down a tree with it though. If you can, I'd have to buy a second copy out of principal.

Jackson, were you there at the E3 booth?

EDIT: I kept looking for someone that had "Jackson" somewhere on their nametag, but no dice. There were also few people with "5th Cell" on their nametag instead of "Warner Bros. Interactive"

i dont see how the can do it either, which takes me back to my original point that i feel like i'll be disappointed. a great puzzle game, sure, but im skeptical when the developer says "you can summon literally anything". im also skeptical because everyones acting like its the second coming of christ. Overhyping always leads to people being disappointed for a large number of players and im calling it right now.

and no proper nouns my ass. whats Cthulu?

First of all, I would have expected an actual response to your question to be more important to respond to than to someone who you believe was flaming you.. secondly, you can edit a post.

See? Easier than you think

I gave my opinion on the first part of the next paragraph, not much more I can add - we would have to wait for Jackson to clarify, if he wants to.

It is fine to be skeptical, I was simply answering your questions

I did say at the top
"note that just because these may/may not fit in the rules do not necessarily mean they won't be in the game, it just means you shouldn't expect them to"
but i'd agree that it didn't stand out that much since it was in your quote box

Hell yea im ignorant of the game. I wish I knew less. Now that I know god can wield a shotgun im not gonna be impressed when i do it myself.

i think it will be funny if i get more enjoyment out of the game than you. if you dont get your hopes up you can never be disappointed.

Im done; im not going to intentionally read previews/reviews, or impressions. you on the other hand wont be as impressed since you probably read and will read about cool shit you can do.

You can go the Mythbusters route and strap the herring to some TNT. That's pretty weaponized if you ask me!

...what? So because I now know these words produce the objects they represent, I won't get as much enjoyment out of the game? Even though the enitre concept of the game is that words produce the objects? Did you seriously just say these were effectively spoilers for the game?

I... I... Thank God you're actually going, my head was about to literally explode here.

Awesome stuff if you do enjoy the game, though, I'm pretty sure when Scribblenauts is released it'll bring world peace and we'll all forget about strife. It's going to be beautiful.

OMG JACKSON. IF IT'S IN THE OED IT BETTER BE IN YOUR TRITE, PROSAIC LITTLE GAME. IF I TYPE <CLOWDER>, I BETTER GET A GODDAMN CLOWDER. IF YOU DON'T KNOW THAT WORD, YOUR GAME'S DUMB. DUMB, DUMB, DUMB.

MOTHERFUCKINGFUCKFUCKSHITRAGE!!!!

On average, let's say you can have six objects on screen at any given time, a low-ball number from what I've seen. Based on conservative estimates on how many different types of objects are in the game, let's estimate the number of combinations at 50,000^6, which is equal to 15,625,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 (1.5625 * 10^28) possibilities for unique circumstances.

And you're getting spoiled on a few of them? Awww. Such a shame. :D

i'm wonder if writing down the names of any neogaf posters will spawn objects...

testing scribblenauts must've been wonderful and terrible at the same time.

I guess I can hide my dictionary to prevent spoilers, but the real problem is all the words I already know! Aardvark, macaroni, stapler, tortilla, it's maddening!!!!! The game's ruined!

And so ends another saga of "Derail the Scribblenauts Thread". Here is a clip from the next page's saga. "This is going to be offensive to people who don't have imagination, I can see this getting bad press, and I won't be a part of it... Shame on all of you"

I think one of these days we'll have to have a sobering conversation about the number of items on screen. Tools and the like seem to take up maybe 1/8 of the limit, but I've seen most "AI enabled" critters take up around 1/4 or more.

On the flip side we've seen screenshots with a ton going on. Maybe they lowered the amount of items onscreen for the demo, or maybe in the early levels you don't get as much to play around with, or...well...who knows, I guess.

But out of all the things that make me hesitant, that's definitely the biggest

What's really great is that people were probably expecting Uncharted 2 to win or something, something that pushes technology and graphics and all that
but plays like shit
, an exclusive, first-party, big-budget title. You could also put God of War 3 or Halo ODST in here or whatever.

And it goes to Scribblenauts, a game that rewards imagination. It personally wasn't my favorite game of the show (heh, it was Bayonetta, which is kinda the sorta thing I was just railing against!), but I can at least see why people are excited over it.

I don't think I'm going to use the stock Ninja VS Pirate battle. The fun will come by arming said Ninja and Pirates with unconventional weapons. Ninjas with flamethrowers and Pirates with ray guns.

Also, curious to see who would come out on top between a Ninja Werewolf and a Pirate Zombie.

Typing "Anihawk" should spawn the Metroid Prime Samus model with animated sparkly lines around its whole OR.........

a female dog!!!!!!!!!!

Of course I don't mean that.

What the heck happened in this thread.

Anihawk: Jackson is Jeremiah. He was at the booth and is in a bunch of the E3 videos. Click his tag for his full name.

Everyone else: Cthulhu and Einstein are proper nouns. Some proper nouns and memes are in the game, but not ALL proper nouns are supposed to be in the game. Pretty much all concrete objects ARE supposed to be in the game.

I just read the comments under E3 09 Editor's Choice awards from Gamespot. It really seems Scribblenauts came out of nowhere (under the radar for even most DS owners) and robbed the awards from the heavy hitters. Transforming from an unknown title to a game that won several awards from major sites and beating out the major titles overnight is really something to be proud of, taking in mind that the sites is probably under the pressure that they knew they will get the backlash from the console gamers but they went ahead and award it anyway.

It almost seems like a scenario where the teacher announces that the person who got the highest score for the paper is the newly transferred small kid sitting at the corner everyone barely know, and not the nerds who've been constantly acing the previous exams.

5th Cell really made everyone's jaws dropped with Scribblenauts at E3. Some of the developers are probably raging at this moment that their sequels lose to a lesser-known (pre-E3 at least) 2D game on the DS :lol

Another award to the list:

http://www.crispygamer.com/features/2009-06-11/the-crispy-awards-e3-2009-edition.aspx
Best Nintendo DS Game: Scribblenauts

It's not easy stealing the show from a cel-shaded Link driving around a cute little train in all of his elfin glory. But that's exactly what the inventive, cerebral Scribblenauts did.

I'm at a convention in Jersey right now, and a few days ago I made this flyer just for fun to hand out at my booth. I figured I'd post it here in case anyone else wants to do some rogue advertising.

I feel like I caused the Comic Sans, since I made this flyer before the box art came out. X_x
