Neil Millstone's port of ScummVM is now at a playable state. Download the preview versions below which includes the demo of Monkey Island (fully working).

Wow, that's awesome! I take it this emulator uses the touch screen? :)

How do you use emulators on DS? You have to buy a flashcart first, right?

I tried it, pretty impressive. The guy obviously haven't implemented the rescaling code because the words are squashed together. Hope he will use the codes from PocketNES so the text can be readable. The gui(talk to, walk to, take, etc....) also needs to be totally redone because they are too close together. I hope he figures out how to:

1) Loading datas from flash cart, instead of loading everything to NDS 4MB. 4MB is too small for most games and there shouldn't be any performance problem loading data from flash cart. The port of PocketPC does it pretty well when running 200+MB games off of SD-Card/CF-Card(we can hope that he will take advantage of Supercard/GBA Movie Player) and the PPC only had 16 MB of free RAM space. I was playing Monkey Island 3 on the PPC, pretty surprised it ran well.

2) Seems that everything is running on ARM9, hope he gets sound working on ARM7.

That's actually really cool, as the DS has an interface that would suit these games very well.

The DS LCD screens really suck, though. :\

and some semi-related news, there are new versions of ScummVM for PSP and Xbox

Xbox too? Did they FINALLY make it so you can surpass the Monkey Island 2 protection? I bought that Lucasarts Classics collection with MI1-3 last year and have been waiting to play MI2 on my TV ever since.

Speaking of which, I hate how Monkey Island 1 uses MP3s for music; you can keep the game sizes very small without them and they take up no space on the memory stick.

quit your bitching, sure they aren't psp quality but they certainly aren't bad. Much better than anything nintendo used before. And its not like these games have fancy ass graphics or anything.

MI2, Full Throttle and especially MI3 had some of the most beautiful 2D graphics ever seen in games. MI3 ran in 640x480 and had amazing animation too.

In any case, these games are best emulated on PDAs, no question about it. Screens on those are much better than DS, and they allow for touch screen input. I also think the RAM on DS could be a problem, and the CPU speed as well, especially for stuff like MP3 speech decoding and MI3 emulation in general.

Dear Sam N Max Hit the Road

I've played you on the desk, in the kitchen, and now I'll admire your soft glow in bed.

Love,

Matlock

Ah - fantastic news!! I was talking about the PSP SCUMM last night, and everyone was saying that they'd prefer it on the DS with the touch screen.

I'll definitely be picking up a flash cart at some point - there are quite a few SCUMM games I've yet to play, and I could easily fit them into my DS time.

I just need any GBA flash cart and a Passme DS cart, right?

To all you people asking if you need some kind of flash cart:

No, the game magically appears on your DS if you eat enough ice cream on cloudy Wednesdays.

Well. In theory at least there's the ability to download games via wifi, but I don't think that's been cracked.

fuck that im a purist.

Lucas Arts better get their shit straight and realize im willing to purchase a 100 copies of an MI: 1 & 2 bundle just so they can turn a profit producing it on the DS :D :D

Are they doing *anything* on the handhelds themselves?
Well, they have an outsourced (to Savage Entertainment) most likely offline Star Wars Battlefront II port for PSP. And they keep letting UbiSoft make generic Episode III games. :/

This is awesome. Now if Brian provinciano can get busy and port AGI and SCI to DS. www.bripro.com

I want my space quest on the go. I still think Sierra and LucasArts could make a mint by doing official ports of these games.

I don't know much about homebrew DS, but I find it strange that even though the official SDK is available, most developers shun it's use, even though it would surely help them. Didn't the Xbox homebrew scene on the other hand embrace the official Xbox SDK?

i think it's illegal to use it?

Well isn't the official xbox sdk copyright of Microsoft, and illegal for homebrew devs to use? It doesn't stop them. They just distribute their work on IRC. It's strange that it isn't popular to do the same in the DS community.

I didn't know an official DS SDK was on the internet.

My take on the whole situation is this: Nintendo would probably be quicker to shutdown operations using official SDKs than MS is to shut down operations using the XDK.

It was only a matter of time, but I didn't think it would come this fast. Nice!

Glad to see that it uses the touch screen. I was actually worried about that.

Seems Ron Gilbert caught wind of this and likes what he hears:
The port of SCUMMVM to the DS is getting a lot of attention.

As the person that created SCUMM and along with Aric Wilmunder coded the original system, my hat is off the SCUMMVM team and contributers for this undertaking.

I am in awe.

Especially since I could never get anything to run from one version of the system to the next...

The full version has been released

Code:
    * Runs nearly all of Lucasarts' SCUMM games up to and including Sam & Max Hit the Road
    * Supports sound
    * Supports multiple games without reflashing
    * Supports using the DS touch screen for controls
    * Suports saving games to compatible flash cards
    * All games run at pretty much full speed

This is great!

can anyone recommend a flash cart and also a reputible place of purchase?

I'm very satisfied with my EZ Flash II Advance kit (and it was quite cheap). I suggest looking on the gbadev forums for recommendations

For now you could use GBAGI to play your precious Sierra adventures :)

http://www.bripro.com/gbagi/index.php

That's was kind of my point. GBAGI is neat, but too clumsy to play a full game, IMO. If he ported it to the DS, the touchscreen could make it something truly useful.

Plus, GBAGI is only good for, well, AGI game. I wanna play SCI game on DS, the point and click ones, eh?
