Games take 3-5 years to make and 100+ million dollars. I finished CP2077 the other day and the credits went on FOREVER.
So yeah triple A JRPGs that push the envelope are dead as a dodo. PlayStation 2 was the peak.
This is very true. If I remember right I think the Xenosaga series might be where stuff started to change. That did not live up to expectations, I think it was supposed to a long six game series? I think Tales of Arise was the last AAA try? I don't know if I should count Final Fantasy anymore. PS3 wasn't anywhere near the RPG machine that the PS2 was (IMO).
I would like to think there is still a sweet spot for making games. A good story, interesting fully developed characters, graphics can vary, and an interesting world.
Let me use Xenoblade as an example. Graphics were just fine, world was interesting BUT too damn big. Story...I really liked the first story but they always tend to go a little out there like most JRPGs do. Characters mostly grew on me.
A few of the Tales games are fine too.
Witcher, overall I like. Characters, setting, world. All interesting. CP2077 misses on all those things IMO but is pretty to look at, but the world is not functional. For a next gen game I expect the flying cars to work. I expect to see things that justify the millions they spent, all I saw was a movie star and world elements that weren't any better than the original Mass Effect.
For all the power that next gen is supposed to have, I still see the same games with no real improvement. Whats the point of ray tracing and all that jazz if the core game elements suck?
I seem to take issue with a LOT of indie titles. They mean well enough, and I like some....however, many run the exact same reveal experience (the walking, the running, visual of a town or forest then more walking/running) would it kill to explain minor character details?
The year is XXXX, you are introduced to ??? and you join them on an amazing journey with companions/enemies to save the world/end the world/stop an evil corp/whatever. Octopath Traveler does an excellent job with introducing characters.
I think that is all I ask.
