Ya, I know that firsthand. I have lived here for 15 years. :p I just want to try a big bowl pho challenge for once with some friends, but I'm having a hard time finding one. Google and Yelp isn't much help.

Have you tried Pho Big Bowl in Ballard? I don't know if it has what you're looking for (I've never been there), but it has big bowl in the name. They have to live up to it somehow, right?

I had an amazing barber in Southern California but I've found myself missing him ever so much after getting my first blind haircut today.

Any suggestions?

No problem, Rudy's is another one to check out. Although IIRC they have those in Cali too, they are from here.

Don't have any specific barber recommendations, I get my hair cut at Regis Salon at Northgate mall. Happened to walk in there once and the manager got me, and she is the person in charge of training all Regis employees nationwide on how to cut mens hair.

My hair kind of sucks, and isn't anything special, but I've had even experienced barbers/stylists make it look like shiat.

Hey Seattle GAF, I drove down with the girlfriend this past weekend and we're in town until Friday (then going to Sasquatch next weekend). We're doing all the tourist stuff in Seattle, got the City Pass and all, is there anything else we definitely need to do while we're down here? We're from Calgary and are both 24 if that helps.

We're staying at the 6th Ave Inn and would prefer not to drive much at all.

Go eat in the a International District. Hike in Golden Gardens, visit the Ballard (Hiram M. Chittenden) locks, and I am sorry to tell you the weather is going to suck all week.

I voted against it, partly because of "the children."

Partly because of crime.

Philosophically I am on the side of completely open laws regarding the sale of alcohol.. but practically? I'm not. Seattle removed liquor stores from certain locations, changed their hours, removed the sale of Malt Liquor from certain neighborhoods, etc. These actions did not make it that difficult for responsible people to obtain what they wanted, they did, however, lower crime in the neighborhoods where these actions took place. The crime wasn't displaced somewhere else.

Hard alcohol IS more dangerous in the hands of the irresponsible.

It's also far more accessible when you privatize it's sale, more likely to be stolen, or sold to someone underage or intoxicated.

That's true? Interesting. I just viewed California and didn't think it's situation with alcohol was significaltly worse then WA or OR. I was more concerned about revenue to the local governments.

I'm all for privitization, but voted against the bill because it heavily favors the big box stores, pretty much eliminating small local shops from springing up and supporting craft distilleries.

I don't buy the safety argument one bit, and I'm a father with a little one at home.

This park became extremely popular with homeless people, and the area became rather drug-addled, Meth and Crack dealers walking up and down the street through that hood.

Lake City was the worst neighborhood in all of Seattle crime-rate wise.

The liquor store then closed for remodeling; they were actually going to make it even bigger, and continue to have it be open until 10PM.

Until the SPD noticed a dramatic drop in crime in the area.. so instead, they abandoned the re-model, and even went as far as to make the nearby liquor stores (Northgate) close an hour or 2 earlier.

The drop in crime continued to persist.. Lake City became a safer place, and it's responsible citizens simply had to go a mile or 2 before 8PM to get their liquor bottles.

Seattle continued to do that elsewhere; but even before that had removed the sale of 40 OZ Malt Liquors and other cheap alcohol popular with "bums," which also helped crime..

Never knew anyone that stole beer from a grocery store? Bought beer from a grocery store where a friend worked? Now that becomes liquor.. a single bottle of liquor is far easier to hide/steel, it also contains far more alcohol than say a 22 of beer.

It increases access for everyone.. it's just the bottom line. Liquor will be sold in more places, that are more accessible.

And liquor causes crime.. increased liquor drinking = increased crime. It's just a basic fact.

At UW: Breaking: Person Found Dead Outside Mcmahon Hall

A male student was found dead on the south lawn outside McMahon Hall this morning.

The UWPD and the Seattle Fire Department responded to a call at about 10 a.m. and are currently at the scene. UWPD Cmdr. Steve Rittereiser said the student appeared to have fallen from a balcony. The cause of death is still undetermined. No further details are available at this time.

Pend Oreille Road was closed off between Stevens Way Northeast and Mason Road but is currently being reopened.

I lived in Mercer Hall, but I had friends in McMahon when I was there. Always wondered about stuff like that happening.

That all sounds true, but experience has taught me it's not. if anything, broader distribution will keep nexuses of alcoholics forming in any particular area. Secondly, homeless scum drink malt liquor, not hard liquor - this is true in every state and even true in Scotland, where I am from originally (via California). Ultimately it was an illogical and pointless waste of economics and practicality. The very people funding the NO measure were malt liquor, beer and wine interests backed by Churches. Totally ridiculous to have common foes fighting this. It was an absurd waste of government too. It will have hiccups, but eventually it will be completely normal.

Clarity: I mean Homeless Scum as a category, not a catchall. As in the opposite of Homeless Nice People. Or Unintentionally Homeless. or Jobless and Homeless.

Homeless Scum are a real and easily identifiable category. And they drink Malt Liquor almost exclusively.

i visited your city on this weekend. i quite liked it. we went to RN74...delicious burgers, cocktails and waitresses, then walked to The Alibi, which is deliciously divey and played 80's hard rock and hair metal that i oh so love. then we went to Noc Noc which was filled with transvestites and new wave muzak.

great vibe, i liked it.

I've been to Seattle for a total of one day in my entire life, and that was for the grad school interview so I don't know anything about the districts in the city.

I'm flying out this summer to look at apartments and could really use some recommendations for areas/apartments to look at. Since I'll be going to UW, I'd like to stay within a reasonable distance of campus.

Also are there any areas I should avoid?

Congrats, I may be joining you, decision is not final I am still in limbo with the stupid changes to the graduate out of state fee waiver they made this year :/

If you're going to be at UW, you should be looking for a place North of the Ship Canal. Neighborhoods include Greenlake, Roosevelt, Maple Leaf, University District, Wallingford, Fremont, etc.
