SEGA CD Suggestions/Appreciation Thread

I've had my JVC X'EYE for about a year now, and only own two games for the thing: Sol Feace, and Popful Mail. In an effort to expand, I just won a copy of Vay off of ebay. I want more games, but the only one I'm sure about getting is Sonic CD.

I'm curious as to how good Dark Wizard, and Shining Force CD are. What are any other good games? Aside from both Lunars which I've already played, I'm open to pretty much anything, in any genre.

One more question, is this thing region free? If so, throw some import suggestions my way.

Shining Force CD is an excellent game.

As for imports, my JVC X'Eye seems to play my Japanese copy of Shadowrun, so I'm assuming it is region free. I bought mine used though, so who knows what's been done to it.

some of my favorite sega cd titles (in no order):

sonic cd
ah-3 thunderstrike
jaguar xj220
chuck rock
lunar
final fight

Silpheed was pretty impressive at the time. Final Fight was nice also. The Secret of Monkey Island was of course the best game on the system, but you may prefer the PC VGA&CD-ROM version.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I'm looking into all of them.

Any of these games good?

Earthworm Jim
Spider-Man Vs. The Kingpin
Eye of the Beholder
Flashback
Ecco the Dolphin
Samurai Showdown

Any good, reliable place to buy Sega CD games aside from ebay? There's only a single copy of Final Fight on there.

I would suggest:

Dark Wizard
Earthworm Jim Special Edition (best version by far)
Ecco the Dolphin
Ecoo: The Tides of Time
Eternal Champions: Challenge from the Dark Side
Eye of the Beholder
Final Fight CD
Heart of the Alien: Out of this World Parts 1 & 2
Shining Force CD
Snatcher (Kojima's best game by far)
Sonic CD
The Adventures of Willy Beamish
The Secret of Monkey Island

Lunar: The Silver Star, Lunar 2: Eternal Blue, Popful Mail, and Vay would of course be on any SCD list, but you already own or have played them.

Dark Wizard is fantasy based strategy with hex based movement and graphic battles you can toggle on or off to speed things along. Long and fun. Four characters to play through.

Shining Force CD is the two Game Gear titles updated to Genesis graphics and arranged music. They play just like Shining Force 1&2 as far as the strategy goes, but they don't have towns or exploration. You go from battle to battle and the game tells the story between them. If you have the RAM cart you'll be able to unlock a third game.

robo aleste! awesome compile shooter in the vein of musha and spriggan. best reason to own a sega cd. i don't think it's expensive or difficult to find either.

I agree - Robo Aleste was my overall favorite Sega CD game, with Sonic CD in a close second.

M.U.S.H.A. was the better shooter than Robo Aleste imo - never played Spriggan.

A lot of good games listed so far, even some overlooked ones. Here's my favorite Sega CD games:

Sonic_CD03.gif

Sonic CD is, of course, my favorite.

SILPHEED03.gif

The original Silpheed is a unique, fun shooter.

Lunar and Lunar 2: Eternal Blue are the most popular RPGs for this system, and for good reason.

EWJ: SE. My second-favorite Sega CD game. Where hast thou gone, Earthworm Jim?

1.gif

Eternal Champions for Genesis: Average fighter. Eternal Champions for Sega CD: Great fighter!!

5.gif

Play as Cody, Haggar, AND Guy! Awesome remixed music! The best home conversion of Final Fight to date!

3.gif

The Secret of Monkey Island. Good converstion of the LucasArts PC classic!

2.gif

Popful Mail, a pretty good action/Adventure by Working Designs.

3.gif

A remake of the first 2 Game Gear Shining Force games, and a very good one at that!

4.gif

Snatcher, a cyber-punk text/Manga-adventure by the folks who brought you Metal Gear Solid.

3.gif

Heart of The Alien, a remake of the Genesis and PC classic, Out of This World.

robo_aleste.jpg

Robo Aleste. Great shooter by compile, creators of Zanac, MUSHA, and Puyo Puyo.

batman_returns.jpg

Batman Returns for the Sega CD. A lot like the Genesis version, but with some awesome driving stages added.

vilkyss.gif

Vay, another RPG brought to you by Working Designs. Not as good as Lunar, but definitely worth taking a look at.

dark_wizard_title.jpg

Dark Wizard. A strategy/RPG with a decent storyline and a great soundtrack.

specials-lotcompare_gfx19.jpg

Lords of Thunder. A great fantasy-styled shooter by Hudson.

keio07.gif
keio03.gif

Keio: Flying Squadron, a humourous side-scrolling shooter by Victor. Fun game, but very hard to find cheap.

Batman Returns for the Sega CD. A lot like the Genesis version, but with some awesome driving stages added

God - I remember Gamefan pimping the shit out of this game - if only because of the driving sections, stating it was worth the purchase for those levels alone. (IIRC)

they overreacted.

yeah i loved third world war and still pop it in every once and awhile. Even better the jap. cover had Bill clinton shaking hands w/ saddom

If you like Dragon's Lair-style gameplay, Road Avenger and Time Gal were both great.

Other than that, most of the games I'd suggest have already been brought up (technically Road Avenger already was, unless the game I'm thinking of is called "Road Warrior" or something). I've heard the Sega CD version of Eternal Champions is brutal, just to warn you, but really expansive and detailed. I think that if you work hard enough to get to the secret end boss fight,
you only get one round, one try, and if you lose, you don't get to retry without playing through the game again.

And Willy Beamish... that might be better as a PC thing. The Sega CD version had the most horrificly long load times I've ever experienced in a video game. Ever. Three minutes for some sequences/areas is NOT a joke. (Made it really hard to get through a sequence in the game where I was being chased, because just changing rooms would cue a minute-long load, then I'd suddenly appear with the person right behind me and usually lose. I think it was the bit with the old woman in your house.)

The Sega CD (and X'Eye) can play Japanese games with a loader disk. Keep in mind that some Japanese games play without a loader disk, and some won't play even with one.

There are FAQs with this kind of info floating around, but they're mostly talking about decade-old loader disks. I dunno how hard it is to find one.

You're talking about the CD-X converter(Not to be confused by the Sega CDX console).

I don't think they go for quite as much as they used to, but a few years ago they were going for between $150 and $200.

i forgot about batman! i disagree that they overreacted, the game was bad ass. thankfully, there was a way to play only the new 3d stages, so you didnt even have to mess with the genesis crap included on the disc. loads of fun, highly recomended

I recommend Eternal Champions CD, a fun 2D fighter that's got a ridiculous amount of characters and secrets. Almost makes you feel sorry for how bad it sold, considering the effort they put into it.

BTW the JVC XEye is not region-free from my experience. Just a warning before you go out and buy a ton of Japanese Mega-CD games.

Prize Fighter or something like that? Oh man, fun times. It had a whole bunch of live action video in it, it was just silly.

Glad to see those three listed. I would also recommend AMOK - my favorite "blow-shit-up" game ever. The draw distance hampers it, but the music, secrets and challenge all make up for it. Awesome game.

The original Thunderstrike is required as well, and Soul Star is excellent - Sega-CD was a shooter fan's dream.

android assault is a very good shmup.

The whole system have very neat game. I think what killed the system was more the premature 32X and the lack of segacd game in stores.

The only thing i would have liked more about it was the inclusion of more animation frame neogeo style.

Road Avenger and Time Gal were very fun representations of Dragon's Lair. Another game in that same vein was Cobra Command(?). I think that Time Gal was my favorite of the three however.

I bought the Sega CD when it launched, and unfortunately it had some problems a few years down the road. The connection with the Genesis was never quite right, and I couldn't trust the Sega CD to stay on during play. It really killed any enjoyment I got out of the unit, and I was also bitter about the cost of the unit and how far it dropped in price within a year or so.

My favorite Sega CD game was Sewer Shark. It was a bad movie (for the first time at home ever) mixed with an average shooter with impressive graphics. It was cheesy, fast-paced, and rote memorization, but it was fun. Sometimes games add up to more than their parts, and this was the case here. It always helps when the controls are responsive like they were.

Othe games I played that I didn't see listed were Cobra Command, Dracula, Joe Montana Football, and Willy Beamish. I bought WB because I thought the graphics were awesome. Man, what a letdown that game was. You thought KOTOR had long load times, and this game was one of those "do the wrong things and you die" types. At a time where I didn't have the money to waste on a bad game, thus ensuring that if I bought a bad game it got played plenty regardless, I played WB for maybe two hours over the years. Dont consider it under any circumstances. Dracula was a very visually impressive game, but the control kinda sucked. I liked playing it but I could never get very far. JM Football was a precursur of 3-d football games. I'm sure it looks and plays horribly, sports games rarely age well.

I'd agree with most of the suggestions listed. My stand outs are Shining Force CD, Dark Wizard, Snatcher, Eternal Champions, Popful Mail, and Final Fight.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Robo Aleste, pretty good shooter in the vein of M.U.S.H.A., There was a Lords of Thunder port to but I love my TurboCD/Duo version.

Snatcher: It's all about false faces.
SonicCD: For the intro alone.
Sewer Shark: Some of the greatest B-acting to grace a console. RE got nuffin on dis.
Spider-Man VS Kingpin: Holy damn hell, man, this had an awesome soundtrack, the first attempt at recreating a map of NYC and and freaking rampaging gorilla. I loved it for the cutscenes. Better than the genesis port sans the picture-taking.
WWF?"?: Can't remember the name, but it had cage matches.
Earthworm Jim: For the loading screens.
???: A Working Designs game where in the intro, a couple was getting married and then all hell breaks loose. I can't believe I forgot the name, but judging from what I played of it it was a good rpg.

Don't get the CD version of Flashback-- it uses grainy video footage for the cutscenes instead of actually rendering them like the cart version. Get the Genesis version if you can.

Final Fight CD was awesome! You should've seen the looks of my SNES-Head friends when they laid eyes on is beaut. The only thing about the game I didn't like was that the punching wasn't as rapid fire as the arcade version. I also played a lot of Bari Arm, which was like the Thunder Force 4 for the Sega CD. A rocking soundtrack and a pretty good difficuilty, but most of all a transforming robot. :)

Good suggestions so far. If you happen to like Snatcher, you might also wanna consider Cobra The Space Adventure. One of my favorite digital comics and one of the few Cobra
games to get the english treatment.

Even though it's based off the SNES release, I think the GBA version is overall smoother visually with far better extras (Alpha Cody & Alpha Guy!). I do pefer the audio in the CD version though.

Colorwise but animation wise, the GBA FF is totally lacking when compared to the Sega CD FF. Just compare the walking animations.

On a completely different note, how hard is it to rip tracks off a Sega CD? I know if I drop most of my discs into a regular CD player, I can play the music tracks on there with no problem. But if I toss the same disc into my PC, I can't get iTunes to recognize or rip the tracks.
