Sega Dreamcast - Appreciation and Emulation Thread

Hey guys, I have an issue and thought this would be the best place to try solve it.
I have a black SEGA Sports Dreamcast and when I plug in my Agetec (NA) arcade stick into the A and B slots the VMU makes a beeping noise but does not come on. Nothing is registering when I move the stick or press any buttons. When I plug the arcade stick into the C and D slots the VMU works but nothing is registering when I move the stick or press any buttons.
I guess it's safe to say my Dreamcast needs to be replaced to get my arcade stick to work? Or am I doing something wrong?
The controller works fine, just the arcade stick won't work. The Dreamcast is a NA system, the arcade stick is almost like new and the games say they will work with an arcade stick as well.
Any suggestions?

the ps2 and gamecube ports were slammed for bring shitty rushed ports by Acclaim after the dreamcast died.

Fresh new Dreamcast controllers still feel good, the one I dug out of storage a month back still has that new quality feel and the stick and triggers are still springy.
Depends on the game, a lot of them have very simple gameplay and a lot of the sega stuff is arcade focused, made for 10 minute bursts.
Graphically I say yes, it's not as blocky and eye cutting sharp as a ps1 game at it's native res, also using a VGA adapter on a dreamcast makes some games look great and crisp.
If the DC ports died the vmu would not react at all, so I don't think it's that... though that does sound weird, can you try it with a regular controller to see if that works ok?

What about PS1 games makes them unplayable to you? I'd guess the graphics. If that's the case, of course it is personal, but the DC is officially the point where 3D became "good enough" to me. All advances since have been nice but unnecessary
Also, there are tons of great PS1 and Saturn games, stop being a baby.

I don't think there's anything wrong with seeing the ps1 era graphics as dated. They even remake last Gen games for HD.
The ps1 has great games, but they're from a different era of early polygonal 3d. The controls, design, and gameplay can also be seen as dated.

DC SoulCalibur in 1999 was mindblowing. Both series have better looking games in their franchises, but the fluid 60fps really helps them age well.
As for holding up, I like SC1 more than its sequels, but DOA2 has definitely been surpassed by its sequels.

SC1 remains one of the best 3D fighting ever made maybe the ultimate fighting game

I don't get any picture on my CRT TV when using a SCART lead. I think it may be because my TV doesn't support RGB. Is there a regular SCART cable I can use that doesn't require an RGB-capable TV? The S-Video cable works but the picture is nowhere near as good as the SCART when I hooked it up to my previous Trinitron TV which unfortunately stopped working.

I have an oddball pick, but I think Vanishing Point is one of the better looking racing games on DC. And I love the visual style of the Daytona remake. Holds up great.
There are SCART cables that carry composite signal instead of RGB, but that would be a downgrade from S-Video. You won't get any better than s-video unless you have an RGB SCART or VGA capable set.
I don't disagree with anything you said, unless you think dated and unplayable are synonyms.

The hardest thing about going back to DC games isn't the graphics. They're mostly fantastic for the time......it's the lack of that second analog stick!
Yes. PC and keyboard are essential accessories for some of the games IMO.

I have no idea where my original DC keyboard has gone but I do have a near brand new mouse, I still need to try it with quake at some point but I played through that earlier last month with the controller, i'll buy a new keyboard first.

bought my DC keyboard for PSO clan, kept it for Typing of the Dead. still use it!

Heads-up: The Demul team has released a new version. It's looking good.
Same, used to hook the ol' white box to the phone line and dive into RAGOL. Loved those lobbies, miss them dearly.
Keyboard still gets use for TotD but should be replaced soon. It's 10+ years old and it feels it.

it was brutal
i blamed lag for my terrible losses but really, i wasn't on that level. i checked the shenmue passport disc here & there (100 man fight leaderboards, and tomorrow's weather!) but PSO was like 99% of my online use.
there's all kindsa stuff i learned later that i didn't try to do online, sadly...it still blows my mind that Samba de Amigo had DLC.

I remember sonic adventure had dlc, Halloween and Christmas decorations aswell as some Reebok sponsored time challenges. This is a launch game we're talking about here. Great stuff.

I'd always wanted to try out Typing of The Dead, however I never really got around to picking it up. That and I only really have one keyboard and no real good place to store it outside of it's original and highly beat up packaging.
Last night however, the lady friend presented me with a second DC keyboard, a copy of typing of the dead, and two extremely awesome customized cardboard boxes to keep them in. :lol

I figured it out, I'm an idiot.
I needed to plug in the arcade stick before turning on the system, which I did. The problem is because I haven't played my Dreamcast in a while the settings for the time and date popped up. I had to restart my Dreamcast again after putting in the date and time.
Indeed she did!
