Sega Dreamcast - Appreciation and Emulation Thread

And I'm pretty sure Power Stone is worth $50 (2 being more $80-100), so those two games alone cover the cost you cited (and paid, I assume blah, didn't see that last post) - at least, if they're both CIB.

There still a slim chance that I can buy it, apparently the other buyer hasn't responded in a while but I'm not holding my breath.

I went with the Power Stone collection on PSP...seems great to me and it's quite cheap.

Ended up getting that Dreamcast deal! I want to keep Grandia, Power Stone & Skies of Arcadia and sell the dreamcast with Spawn and/or Seaman. I'm not sure if I want to sell Seaman yet, not interested in playing it but it's a fun novelty item. How much should a dreamcast with Spawn and Seaman sell for? 20?

These Sega prices are getting CRAAAAAAAAAAY. I should of got Illbleed back when it was 40-50, now its in the 80-100 range. effing Sega and their stupid awesome consoles that didn't sell well...

p.s. does anyone know where I can get a USB GD-ROM drive? I wanna mod a Dreamcast to play fro ma flash drive.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
I'm amazed at what folk are paying for the likes of GunBird/GigaWing on eBay.

Mars Matrix has gone up quite a bit, too. I don't think it's a good enough game to justify the prices. Not when you could be buying Border Down or Under Defeat instead.

Ah, I love Mars Matrix, personally, especially compared to the Giga Wings etc ;) Love the currency/shop mechanics.

But I got it on release or on clearance, like most of my DC collection, so I can't really judge value in this current market.

I just booted up Giga Wang (RIP xoxak) on Friday for ChronDC. The port has some legit nice, newly-done art and music. But man, those CPS2/3 ports in 480p don't really scale well, and when you use noisy prerendered sprites like in GW it seems even worse.

Does Mars Matrix do 240p? I've heard Third Strike does, but can the Dreamcast natively do the CPS resolution, even?

I got Mars matrix for around $80 (jp, complete with spine and registration cards) and it definitely feels worth it to me. Amazing game, up there with Gradius V and Ikaruga in the best STGs of gen 6 for me.

Warning though, the game is ugly AF on anything but my 14" CRT. Don't pick it up expecting a looker.

Honestly, the aesthetics are the biggest detractor for me, and that's why I'm not a huge fan. Terrible visuals, terrible music.

if the DC version doesn't do 240p then MAME is probably the only way to get half-decent visuals out of it, but even then you can only do so much with goober pre-rendered sprites at low resolutions

Speaking of Giga Wing... were the Giga Wing games the same between the US and Japan? I know that Gunbird 2 had some stuff that was cut from the US release, but I dunno if it was the same deal with the other Capcom shmups.

Just picked up a near mint copy of Record of Lodoss War. Game seems pretty cool, although I never see or hear people talking about it. Anyone in here played it?

Easily one of my most played DC games back in the day. Just scratches that Diablo loot-drop itch perfectly for me. It's real easy to build an over powered character & just sit back & grind. Loved it.

I really enjoyed it, but found it dead hard. Good Diablo clone :)

Awesome, that's the type of game I was looking for. Gonna pop this mug in asap...I hope it runs at 480p.

Thanks, comrades!

Played and loved it. Was a huge fan of the anime, so the Parn and Deedlit cameos were pretty cool. Would have liked more of them in the game, but I still really enjoyed it.

When the fuck did that happen?! I was selling 2 for like 50 bucks a pop not too long ago and it took me a while... $100? Oh of course i miss out on the peak selling time. Of course. Fuck me, of course.

What's the solution, never selling your games out of fear the sale price will increase later?
I wouldn't sweat it.

Found some buyers for the extra stuff I don't want from the bundle I bought, so basically I ended up with Skies, Grandia 2 and Power Stone 1 for 90$. Feels good man.

Don't feel too bad, just think back to all the people who either passed on getting Panzer Dragoon saga when it first came out, or the people who sold it immediately to make a quick buck.

Out of interest what are people plugging their Dreamcast VGA into? Old computer monitors? Neither my PVM or HDTV have VGA inputs.

Yes. I used to have amazing 21 inch Sony professional CRT computer monitor, but that eventually kicked the bucket. Now I use a middle of the road old 19" Viewsonic CRT from a yard sale. Have it set up on a secondhand KVM switch with my Xbox 360 over VGA for Tate STGs like Raiden Fighters Aces and Espgaluda II.

I have a Compaq and Envision CRT monitor I use on my Dreamcast. Great picture quality out of both but the Compaq is slightly better.

yeah, wish i hadn't sold Skies years ago, but i still have the LE of Eternal Arcadia & the gamecube version, so i'm good. gotta replay that one someday now that we know the HD version isn't happening =/

It does feel like Dreamcast games are starting to creep up...

Nowhere near Saturn games, obviously, but we'll get there.

saw the capcom ones creeping up first, then weird stuff like illbleed. im assuming the easy-to-burn setup keeps some prices down? who knows

Nah, if that was the case, there'd be no market for like... Most old games.

I think it's more likely because the DC was a relatively accessible console for a long time. Prices were low cuz there were a lot of copies of stuff out there, and the system never disappeared into obscurity in quite the way something like the Saturn did.

true, true

but what all else has gone up? when i rebought most of my stuff a few years back, i dont think i paid more than $20-25 for most things, a few were cheap because of cracked cases but those are swapped out easily enough

hi guys, I need an RCA (male) -> 3.5mm (female or male) cable so I can use my speakers that I posted on the previous page. Not finding anything locally at BestBuy that fits the bill, anyone have recommendations?

I'm being over dramatic, but it's the part where it took me loke 6 months to sell off 2 mint condition copies somewhat recently that really gets me. How did it go from that to being hot shit item of the DC's library that aparently flies for double the prices all of a sudden? Game collectors, I don't get them. :p

Yeah it's impossible to predict so don't overthink it imo

IT only really sux when you are looking to buy. I'm holding off on Illbleed for that reason...

It actually looks great on a smaller CRT. The sprites look much more like actual hand drawn sprite work and less like pre rendered blobs, and they mesh a lot better with the background as well.

Was Illbleed actually any good? I feel like I've asked this before. I remember it looked awesome in the first couple of previews in Dreamcast magazine, but I seem to recall it getting a lukewarm reception upon release.

It's a bit better than Blue Stinger, the team's prior game. It's in that Deadly Premonition school of bad-good and bizarre. Nothing like it.

Mechanically, you're basically a detective in a haunted house, using a radar system to detect what will scare you before it can scare you (and cause damage). You're also managing resources to survive shoddy arena battles.

It's not going to rock your world, and it's functionally fairly rough, but you'll probably be happy you played it if only for the experience.
