Sega sells Visual Concepts

T2 bought out Indie Built for $18.5M, Venom for $1.8M, and VC (including Kush) for $24M. They spent only $44.3M on studio acquisitions to enter the $1B sports market. T2 is a master of bargain hunting.

Ironically, T2 should thank EA for undermining Sega's bargaining power in the acquisition process.

SEGA to Distribute Take-Two Consumer Software in Asian Markets

TOKYO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 24, 2005--SEGA Corporation and Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc., today announced an agreement which allows SEGA to distribute select Take-Two published software titles in the Asian region including Japan.

Effective immediately, SEGA will become the distributor of select Take-Two games in the Asian region, including Japan. In addition, SEGA and Take-Two have agreed to work together to bring sports titles developed by Visual Concepts to amusement machines produced and distributed by SEGA Amusements. SEGA will strengthen their consumer and amusement businesses by continuing to collaborate with Take-Two.

"SEGA's previous relationship with Take-Two has helped us increase the profitability of consumer operations in North America," said Hisao Oguchi, President and COO, SEGA Corporation. "This agreement with Take-Two represents a global initiative that will boost the revenue of our global amusement business and consumer business in the Asia region, including Japan."

"Take-Two's collaboration with SEGA to enter the lucrative sports market has proven extremely successful," said Paul Eibeler, President of Take-Two Interactive Software. "We look forward to further extending our relationship with SEGA as they bring Visual Concepts' critically-acclaimed sports games to arcades worldwide and also distribute select Take-Two titles in the Asia region."

This announcement immediately follows Take-Two's acquisition of all common stock and related assets of Visual Concepts, formerly SEGA's wholly-owned development subsidiary in the US and the developer of the ESPN Videogames series. The companies first aligned in May 2004, when Take-Two assumed exclusive worldwide distribution and co-publishing rights for the ESPN Videogames series.

We should see some fantastic sports games from T2. The M$ guys had some very good ideas...

T2's determination to acquire VC in spite of EA's aggressive revenge might reflect T2's confidence in signing more exclusive licenses with sports leagues. Stay tuned for more exclusivity-deal announcements from T2.

If VC were able to perform "the coup" on the football platform last year with their comparitively meager resources while spread out over several sports, I'd wager they can turn out some really great stuff when fully funded by Take Two and focused on less sports.

So I guess Sega's plans to become the world's largest publisher of entertainment software are no more...

Their fall was terrible, but it can still get worse:

1. Sonic, PSO, and other somewhat high profile names phase out.
and
2. They drag Sammy down with them.

I don't think it will come to that. However, Sammy doesn't seem like a good partner for Sega and that's really Sammy's own fault.

Wow. That 24 million figure really slaps you in the face when you realize EA paid 850 million for the ESPN license.

Sega is beyond dumb now. There are no words for their stupidity. Whenever a company makes a bad decision from now on we should all call it a "sega".
No, I'm going to go against the grain and say this was a surprisingly smart move by Sega. Visual Concepts are very talented at creating sports titles, but with the ESPN license gone there's even less chance of them turning a large profit. Best ship em off for someone else to worry about and focus on making money elsewhere.

Wow... I bet Capcom's pissed after all they did to promote GTA in Japan. :/

Don't give a shit about sports games or sega, but goddamnit Take Two, way to stab Capcom in the back, mothefuckers.

the press release said Sega will distribute certain Take Two products. No mention of GTA. Capcom probably keep GTA distribution in Japan.

What a sad state of affairs Sega has fallen into. Remeber the old days when the created such excellent titles?? :(

Still, dropping VC is probably a good thing. Without the NFL/NFLPA license, not to mention ESPN, the football game is going to be a lackluster seller, even if it is superior to Madden. Perhaps they can build some other franchises to become a solid money maker for Take Two, but it's going to be an up-hill battle for awhile.

I agree. Capcom has done a good job distributing GTA in Japan.

Sega makes too much money in the Arcade sector (where is the one area Sega knows what they are doing), and the Sammy pachinko crap (I assume). I really don't see how things can get any worst, this seems like the low point to me. How is Sonic and the others going to phase out? Even with a D rated game, Sonic is going to stay dependable for business. As for the other franchises, there's next gen hardware soon to come out, as I find it no coincidence that Sega is at their most quiet on the eve of these new system announcements/unveilings. All I'm saying is that it's way too early to pronounce Sega death before we know what they working on for the future. It's just as possible that we'll see a renewed, enthusastic Sega, instead of the lethargic and retarded Sega most here expect them to always be.

IAWTP

Sega needed Visual Concepts when they had thier own system, but now that they are 3rd party they don't. Before the Take Two Deal was Sega's sports game setting the world on fire? I am talking about after the the Dreamcast. I remember people saying that it wasn't selling much. So, I think this is a good move for Sega.

I'm lucky I don't care about sports games, cuz this is all too confusing. It's like a soap opera here!

Has Visual Concepts made any non sports games that are any interesting?
