While millions of customers benefited from $20 sports games from Sega and Take-Two this year, the party may not necessarily last indefinitely. Reuters news service reports from the UBS Media Week Conference that Take-Two is looking to kick prices up to the premium level once the next generation of consoles arrives.

"We continue to evaluate pricing," said Executive Vice President Cindi Buckwalter. "When the next-generation hardware comes out, we do expect to introduce the sports products at premium prices."

Whether Take-Two will maintain the budget price points for next year's sports games on PlayStation 2 and Xbox remains an open question.

This year's pricing stunt certainly seems to have been successful, however. Sega and Take-Two made major gains in unit sales with their football, basketball, and hockey titles this year, and they'll reportedly turn a profit once the holiday season concludes as well.

They're idiots if they raise them above $30 this gen. After that they lose a good portion of the folks that bought it over Madden, or bought it as well as Madden.

I can see the logic in full-price titles for the next console cycle, but they need to keep the prices low until then to get more converts.

$20 is really my limit for impulse purchases, after that I have to think about it. I know I'd have never bought ESPN NFL/NBA if they were more than $20. NHL is a different story altogether, though full-price NHL would be nice since they'd have no excuse for all the fucking bugs.

They aren't idiots. It's tough to sell 2,000,000 copies of a game when there aren't 2,000,000 players with consoles. :lol

Are you saying between Xbox and PS2 their isn't 2,000,000 consoles out on the market? Someone has fuzzy math or needs to go back to school. :lol

yea
they better go with 30 for next year. and gradually move up as the years go by.

and on the next gen consoles...possibly 40-45

Alot of the people who buoght espn this year werent just espn fans obviously....they were curious madden fans who love football and were willing to plunker down 20 bucks for another/extra option to go with madden.

peace

this is too soon, I wouldn't raise the price until ESPN either matches or outsells Madden, EA also doesn't sit still like some other companies do, they're gonna go all out to try to crush ESPN next year like they did with GameDay and QBC

Why is $50 considered a "premium price", exactly? Isn't $50 the standard price for most games, with $20-$40 being considered budget?

Wasn't this fully expected when they announced the price drop in the first place? Get people hooked then raise the prices....
