Sega takes Capcom’s crown as Metacritic’s highest-rated publisher of 2024

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

Review aggregation website Metacritic has revealed the results of its 15th annual Game Publisher Rankings.

Sega topped the list, which was determined based on the quality of publishers’ releases in 2024.

The Japanese company released a number of critically acclaimed games last year including Metaphor: ReFantazio, Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance and Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth.
Publishers were ranked using a points system, calculated (as in previous years) according to four factors, according to Metacritic.

The most weight was given to the average Metascore for their games, but also taken into account were the percentage of scored titles with good reviews (score of at least 75), the percentage of scored products with bad reviews (49 or lower), and the number of “great” games released (90 or higher).

1) Sega (325.5 points) – 82.9 (last year: 9th)
2) Capcom (323.1 points) – 82.1 (last year: 1st)
3) Aksys Games (318.1 points) – 78.8 (last year: 7th)
4) Sony (314 points) – 80.9 (last year: 13th)
5) Focus Entertainment (309.6 points) – 79.1 (last year: 18th)
6) Gamera Games (303.5 points) – 80.2 (last year: n/a)
6) Square Enix (303.5 points) – 78.5 (last year: 19th)
8) Raw Fury (301.1 points) – 78.5 (last year: 2nd)
9) Microsoft (301 points) – 79.4 (last year: 15th)
10) Annapurna Interactive (298.7 points) – 79.2 (last year: 5th)

Wow, Nintendo at #22. That seems surprising to me. What garbo did they publish to bring their average down so much?

What is Sony doing at number 4 in their worst generation ever?

What's this?

Waiting for Sonic 3 to hit Netflix. The first 2 movies were great. I want to see 3 and 4 now.

Also we watched Dungeons & Dragons : Honor Among Thieves this weekend. Wonderful movie. I want more of that too.

And thats not reflect SEGA doing more quality games than CAPCOM. What next? Microsoft is making the best FPS around because they buy Activision?

SEGA has been shit for a long time. Even the most safe remaster is a hard work for SEGA.

Atlus *is* Sega.

Yeah yeah. ATLUS is doing the lift here, not necessarily SEGA.

Again, for the context of the thread in case everyone here is forgeting.

Because Atlus.
In 2024, yes. Overall, nah. Sega had a better metascore in the last year prior the acquisition.

And as you can see, the Arcade Teams within Division 1 and 2 are killing it:

Segatlus has a 82% Metascore, Shadow is a solid 80%, Infinite Wealth a solid 90%...

Sega West is also delivering (2 Points Museum is a must this year).

Some years Atlus disapoints (Soul Hackers 2), sometimes it's Sega...

And for the usual "It's just Atlus" :

Who paid for the 200 new Atlus employees and will invest, hire, even more ?

Sega 😘
PS:
Atlus without Sega's money and without Utsumi as CEO:

Metacritic released overall scores for games by publisher, and ranked them accordingly:

Mid-size publishers (7-14 unique tiles in 2012 before the purchase)
1 Take-Two Interactive - 83.1%
2 Telltale Games - 83.9%
3 Square Enix - 75.2%
...

6 Atlus Co. - 69.8%

I doubt you bought much of SEGA stuff and also why say Xbox make the best FPSs . No different for how Nintendo fans said Metroid Prime was the best FPS around or SONY fans saying Killzone 2 was the best FPS around despite both studios being bought out.

I don't know what SEGA remasters you are referring too but most of late have been of decent quality just as long as you're not playing a Switch version

Killing it ? They have been releasing the same predictable games as always. But it is good to see that some of their low effort products finally get low scores.
Sorry but horseshit. BG3 was closer to DOS2 than TOTK was to BOTW. You just don't understand how iteration works. You probably don't play the games either, otherwise you wouldn't be so wrong.

Lol. 9 of 10 highest rated publishers on this list are either Japanese publishers or indie publishers (or AA).

Of all the major AAA Western publishers, only Microsoft is here

And this is really indicative, this is really true. Japanese, Chinese, Korean, some Eastern European games (like KCD2 or Stalker 2) are just blasting, they are coming out to be great one after another. One Monster Hunter Wilds comes after another Black Myth: Wukong

And meanwhile, one after another, Western games are turning out to be disgusting garbage. One Avowed comes after another Dragon Age The Veilguard with Lost Records gravy

Nice try. I played both Zelda games though, and completed BOTW. Not TOTK, mainly because it was the same bloated formula of infinite copy-pasted tedious work to do for another 100 hours.

Well it’s nice to see sega at least at number 1 for something. Merging with Atlus was one of their better decisions, also outside of gaming the sonic movies are actually really good they really did a great tribute to the source material just a shame the games they are based on not so great.

Big irony is that I completed both BotW and ToTK (even played through them more than once). Yet I could bring myself to keep playing RDR2 and Witcher 3 because I found them boring at best and frustrating to play at worst.

I would never play games like RDR2 et Witcher 3 for the exact same reasons. Tedious borefest.

It's not only Atlus.

From the west to the east, all Sega studios are consistent in greatness.

Another 84%

Gamers also forget that games like Shadow Generations are in fact 85%/90% metascores:

Shadow Generations is only 80% because all reviewers think it's dragged down by the Sonic Generations part... (Sonic Gen is 2010 past Sega, Shadow Gen is present 2024 Sega)

Why even the Sonic Team can deliver +85% level games now ?

The answer from Shuji Utsumi:

"Our best teams at Sega (arcade team) were only developing for a declining market. I changed that. They work with console teams now "(Division 1=RGG/AM2, Division 2=Sonic Team/Initial D Team etc)

That why ALL Sega studios are better now (Atlus improved with Sega's money for new staff, Sega's infrastructures and new tech of their brand new building, Sonic Team improved with the help of arcade team, so as RGG helped by AM2 and Creative Assembly will probably have a AAA budget for Alien Isolation 2)
