Sell Your WoW's Its All Over! MAF's Catacombs Impressions

Its a curse to have to work on a day an anticipated game is to be released. Regardless I spent some time before work driving through christmas hell to grab a couple copies of Dark Age of Camelot: Catacombs from the nearby Electronics Boutique.

First off, lots shipped. EB got freaking 30+ copies. Thats pretty solid for an expansion release. A small group was there waiting for UPS to arrive. I made the most of my time and went christmas card shopping.

Ran home, popped it in. 6 cds! Catacombs takes up 4 cds, thats 4 cds of new content, that rules. Included with this 30 dollar software is the original Dark Age of Camelot and the Shrouded Isle expansion. Trials of Atlantis not included. Anyone wanting the complete experience will wanna grab DAoC Platinum and Catacombs, but just Catacombs is a good place to start. You might find trials somewhere cheap anyway.

First off. Visuals. Overlands are the same. What got the insane visual upgrades are all of the dungeons. Characters also got massive upgrades. Armor got massive visual upgrades, weapons, almost every enemy. Animations were not added to, but better models make it easier to enjoy what IS there.

For the most part the game plays the same, new classes to each side, ya ya. However, the new content added with the Catacomb worlds and the addition of solo or grouped instanced dungeons = awesome. Experienced gained through instances is significant early on and the drops and match ups are ideal. I suspect later instances might not be as rewarding (ala WoW, ive heard reports), but the set classic dungeons have never failed to provide a challenge.

Castellan and I went through an instance just tonight. There's something nice about not having to fight other players for spawn points, because the dungeon is all freaking yours.

Funny enough im not using any of the new classes. I just switched from Hibernia to Midgard for a change of pace. The runemaster is an old class, but new to me ;)

Ill try a vampiir when there are fewer people at it. I still have my valewalker tho. Power of the Scythe! Anyway, screens.

First screen is of my Runemaster on Merlin: I got the cloak from someone who felt sorry at my frustration in trying to find a jerk who sells one. I can cast runes or something! The other two shots are of m valewalker in Hibernia, those who have seen the tombs in the old DAoC can appreciate its new look.

I liked DAoC I just hated the fact everyone was like ... not a beginer anymore, find people to quest with was a bitch, but thats my fault for getting into the game 2 years late.

So MAF, can a deliciously underpowered PC handle Catacombs (1.1Ghz Processor, 256RAM, Radeon 8500)? I'm looking for a new MMORPG, and DAoC is a frontrunner. Will Catacombs run alright, or am I better off getting the Platinum or Gold edition of the game?

PS - What server are you guys on if I hop onboard the DAoC train, anyway?

Everyone I know is on merlin in midgard (me, my roommate, and drinky crow), its the busiest server.

Catacombs runs as good as Platinum did, and I have AA and AF on and everything in options cranked.

well maybe ill pick it up maf (i already have the plat collection, AND DAOC AND TOA seperate *dontask*)

if I do go ill follow your guys lead

I just hate going into "matured" mmorpgs with no one you know and where the beginer zones have like 2 people in them.

Well the way Drinky Crow and I are going we have seperate characters just for grouping, that way we stay around the same level. Then we have our solo/whenever characters.

Everyone on there seems like a n00b; it's packed with low-levels, some old-timers making new characters, but a lotta pure greenhorns figuring out the system.

well I dunno about maf but if all else fails the old print screen and paste it into photoshop always works.

So the pop in the begining areas is good then doug?

Must be this shitty wireless keyboard -- y'know, the one that won't let me hold a directional key down longer than three seconds.

I thought you had to be gay or a girl to play a girl in a MMORPG. Do you enjoy the virtual studs hitting on you MAF?

No, it's only nerds who get into character. Me, I'd rather look at a chick's backside across a hundred hours of third-person gameplay than a dude's, frankly speaking, although I play male/female characters in about equal portion. I don't wanna BE the character, I just wanna upgrade its stats and hit things while looking at the scenery.

Not only that, but intelligent, exploitative players can also have female characters to take advantage of those in-game that believe every female char is a female gamer waiting to be 'hit on'.

My first SWG char was a male weaponsmith that slogged & did the "grind" for about 4 months before raising about 10 Million.

My second was female, on a different server raised 10 Million in 3 weeks, not by slogging or grinding, but just by accepting "gifts" from desperate adolescents. After raising the credits I transferred the moolah to a male char & deleted the female, as "wanna cyber?" messages got tiresome :P

I can attest to the female persuasions in a MMO.

Played a chick chanter in EQ. High Elf to be exact just because I liked the model.. I had tons of shit thrown at me. Note in no way did I ever play effeminate or anything (though I didn't exactly play all dude-like either), yet guys would literally just run past me and open up a trade window.

Being a female character is cool for lots of reasons, the main reasons mentioned already above.

Dont feel like staring at hairy man-ass for hours on end. Just my thing, sorry.

Free stuff is easier to get as a female character. Lonely people will take any chance to do nice things in the OFF chance youre a female. When they find out you arent they take the high road and just accept they did a nice thing. For example today this person gave me 6 gold just out of the blue. Thats cool!

I play it like a glorified IRC, too, right down to the retarded catchphrases. It's still basically a big IRC channel, but it's really pretty and I get to play a 1980's-era RPG in the process!

1st admit it you like being treated like a lady, and 2nd why would you be staring at a hairy man ass for hours? Do you have a fixation on asses?

A.) Asses are mysterious and gravitational.

B.) Being pampered rox cause it saves me time so I can do other things like live.

Wearing women's panties is strictly a comfort thing too right?

Doug plays an MMORPG now? The same thing he once called a glorified IRC?

Actually this is part of the reason he seems to be enjoying time with DAOC it seems, the marriage of IRC and min-maxing, a concept I have become content with as well...in that 'other' MMO

It's kind of embarrassing to admit that I choose female characters myself because I prefer to stare at the ass of some polygonal avatar, but playing dress-up IS more interesting on a chick than an orc. My undead warlock looks ripped right out of SMT complete with leather straps covering her eyes and face. Kinda cool.

How hard is it to understand that chicks are easier on the eyes than dudes? Barring you being Suerte, of course.

Do you pretend you're Gluzbot the Man-Orc when you play?

I think at a certain age/mentality you stop indentifying with HARDCORE EXTREME TUFF ENUFF looks and realize that its all about whats interesting to you. I dont like big hairy guys or animals. Just me. I like women. MAN do I like women. So naturally id rather deal with female characters.

Then you have the guys who like to play with dollies.

I also don't understand the need to play a female character.

I mean you equate it with an IRC channel. Well say you were in an irc channel or even this message board, and your name was Arnoera and you had a blonde female as your avatar. What do you think people would think then?

Your character is a representation (avatar) of you. Shouldn't you at least get the gender right?

What it comes down to is this:

I dont identify with my character. I dont pretend im her. I dont pretend im with her on an adventure. She is a tool for leveling up. An avatar that represents not me, but the time I have put into the game.

And who cares what people think, the instant you play a game a certain way because youre afraid someone might think youre gay is the day you need to start your gaming collection ablaze and attend a Linkin Park concert.

Well say in a game like Tomb Raider, you play a part in a predetermined story so I can understand playing as a chick, but in a MMORPG where you can choose to play any role you wish. It is not like playing Quake 3 and picking a chick player model, picking a chick in a MMORPG has much deeper meaning, especially when you start to act like one to get free stuff.

When you play a game like DAoC or WoW or EQ bit of your personality bleeds through, like it or not.

Yet - You enjoy SUMMONING BEARS! come out of the MONSTER CLOSET! you... druid.

It cracks me up that playing a fighting game with chicks like DoA is OMG OMG MANLY HUR HUR BOOBS SHE KIX HIGH but doing the same thing with an MMORPG means you're secretly wearing mom's panties.

Because as you said, an mmorpg is like a "glorified irc".

So your name and avatar are supposed to be representation of yourself.

That could just mean we have a subconscious desire to stare at tits and ass...

You didn't create the girls of DOA to play as, you do however create the pretty little elf girl or whatever in DAoC. She is a personalized representation of you in the online world, in all of her feminine beauty.
