SF3: Third Strike: Ive Found my Alternate

Finally!

He rocks! More than Q even, but Q still holds a special robot place in my heart.

I use Yang as my alternative to Ken.

...but now it kinda seems like Ken is becoming the alternative to Yang.

Ken is your Ying to your Yang?

<groan>

I use, thanks to Ferrio's recomendation in every Street Fighter 3 Thread......Makoto, and she is lethal. Now Yun is my alternate. Sometimes I use Ibuki, and I unjoy using Dudley, and Remy as well. I cant bring myself to use Ryu, Ken, or Akuma, just feels like I've been using them way too long.

Right now, I've been trying to really get into Ibuki (well, since last night for the 1st time actually). I was a Makoto whore for a long time and then switched to Hugo (who is fun as hell to use btw) but last night I figured I'd learn a pokey, quick character to try to fuck w/ my friend's Yang (who I hate to no end). Still, Makoto is where my heart is at, even though I can't pull off like 1% of her crazy juggle/stun combos. Hugo is up there for me too--finally can buffer his Moonsault Press into a dash at will and can pull it off just plain walking up to people most of the time. That, and his Hammer Frenzy is the killer of all wanna-be meaty attacks. :)

I dig Ibuki most for her chains, her annoyance, and her flash (Hien/Kasumi-Suzaku, jab Tsuji Goe/late Kasumi-Suzaku). She's weak as hell, but it's all good.

On the parrying front, I can finally parry all of Ryu's Shinkuu-Hadoken no problem (hey, it's a start!).

Good to see people are really playing this game...

DRINKY CROW HAS BEEN PLAYING OTHER CHARACTERS BEHIND DUDLEY's BACK!

Tabris: While ive been in AZ its been single player, but when I was in WA, and soon will be, I play against Shouta, Drinky Crow, Kiryogi, played against Blackace, and some others. Im a capable fighter, never gonna care enough to enter tournies tho cause games take a backseat to life these days.

Shit, MAF, that's a fair list of ppl you're playing. Sadly, I just have my best friend and that's it. =( All my other buddies look at anything 2D with a fair amount of disdain. The last time I had a bunch of ppl to play was at a VF gathering in Long Island some years back (though I played mostly Soul Cali and Alpha 3 seeing as how I lugged a TV and my DC all the way from the Bronx--this one kid from Chicago, Harold IIRC, kicked my ass all over the place).

Tomorrow matter of fact, gonna have a SF3 session--prolly 8 hours or so.

Yes praise makoto and her evil throw.

Ken, Ryu, Dudley, Chun-Li, Yang, Hugo and Alex are my best people. Alex is by far my weakest character of them all though. I need lots of work on his throws.

Just got Third Strike, and after a quick playtest of some of the new characters, my decision fell on Yun. Been practising his moves all day long.

I WANT TO BE GOOD DAMNIT

I have completely dropped Yun. Completely. I'm no good at Genei Jin juggles. I also tried to get good with Dudley and Makoto, Makoto I made some improvements but not that great (I can DO the SAII combo but can't really set it up right), and I can't use Dudley worth shit. So my current roster is:

Alex - Still kick ass with him, and I don't think I'm improving much with him though. I think I play the same with him as I did a month ago.

Oro - I have nearly perfected my Tengu juggles and have gotten some 30+ hit combos several times on LIVE. I'm much improved with Oro this past month.

Necro - I FINALLY got good with him. I actually got someone to drop on me in the first round after I did an Electric Snake corner juggle that stunned him and I finished him off quickly. Might've been pissed that I taunted when he was stunned, but it's a 25% damage increase for the next combo.

Dejinn Ryu - I don't pick it unless the guy is A or higher because I figure if you're an A, you should be able to parry it...but oh boy I don't let you parry it. Not the way I throw it.

Minorly:
Hugo - I figured how to do standing 360's so I'm enjoying playing as him. Still not that great with him, and since I'm using a Hip Gear pad (my other controllers broke), I tend to jump instead of do the 360 half the time. Still I'm much better with him.

Remy - Fun to use, I don't even use his super anymore. Just EXs. I'm working on getting rapid fire going, but it's hard. Ever try to charge partition using a pad. Not fun.

LakeEarth, unblock me on MSN. :(
(goes through MSN history to figure out why I blocked you in the first place)
Hmm...not blocked on my end, unless that's not you :S

EDIT - not you, there you are, there you are...

HUMILIATION

Meh, SAII!

I came in this thread to praise makoto, and looks like I already did.... t his thread is OLD.

Use yang, ken, hugo as backup.

boo CvS2 > 3S

anyways I play team shoto, Ryu SA2 (nothing like landing shinsho on people) my alternative is now Makoto since Yun requires too much effort with girly vitality.

I play Remy. He's a lot of fun, cold blue kick and low lov make him a lot more interesting than Guile. I use SA II although I hardly ever actually do SRRF, I mostly just use the meter for EX lovs.

Also Alex, Ryu and the twins. With Yun I actually use SA II more than GJ.

'm working on getting rapid fire going, but it's hard. Ever try to charge partition using a pad. Not fun.

I don't have trouble with it. I just hate the buttons on the Xbox pad.

Yun is my main man, Ken , remy and Yang are my alternates and i'm starting to get good with Mokoto and of all people Necro.

take me on online you punks i'll take you all down.

I use Remy SA2 mostly, with the occasional Ryu SA1.

I refuse to use Denjin Ryu most of the time, it's a PITA to fight against so I know how it feels to be on the receiving end. From time to time, I'll choose it if the connection seems really good.

I have fun using Hugo, but my standing 360's are garbage :(

I played this the other night, I suck total ass at the game, even with the characters from SF2. Who's good to start learning..anything in this game?

I used to have 2nd Impact on DC, but traded it in a long time ago and really liked Dudley.
When I played 3S recently (3 stars, used Dudley, then Chun Li, then Ken, then Ryu), I didn't know how to parry (I think I parried about 4x) or do many combos aside from some 2-in-ones from SF2 (jump kick, low MK/fierce punch, special move), and really didn't do much.

Akuma perfected on my Ken, and I probably used about 12 continues until I beat it (with Ryu). I felt so useless. :/

WTF is Urien's backstory anyway?

His brother was chosen to lead some sort of uber secret sect on the Moon, and Urien was kicked out, and forced into being a stripper and sexual slavery to maintain himself. Tired of turning tricks in the back of a club for pizza money, he sets out in his 'work gear' to try and reclaim his spot from Fabio.

I only go for the easy parry. Jumping in attacks, straight up projectiles, things like that. Most of SF3 from what I can see is still driven by the fundamentals. A good all around game will make you an above average players. And since most of us will never attend a tourney, who cares huh?

I use Chun Li and Q a lot these days.

Elena! :D
She's a lot of fun to use.
Plus, she kicks ass, but she's no where near as good as my Shotokan's.

Though, for some reason when I'm Q, I can tech hit supers...
(Especially easy ones, like Remy's.)

Actually, every single friggin Character in that game kicks ass.

I remember playing the game in Japan early '99,
I knew it was gonna be a classic.

I couldn't even combo for crap or do special moves. And when I was using Ken/Ryu, I played them just as I would in SF2, which translates to piss-poor in 3S. Same with Chun Li. Who's an easy character to learn the ropes? Is Dudley alright for that?

Easy character is ryu or ken. Shoto always are. Their special moves are easy. Most of chun lis moves are pretty damned easy too. Just set it to one star and play away.

1 star? I'm not that bad at gaming!
I dunno if Ken/Ryu are really good for me to go with, like I said I kept trying to use them a la SF2, which wasn't very good.

I dunno scar, when I pick a character, I generally pick the one who has the style of fighting I like the most. That way I WANT to learn the character and work harder at it.

You really should use a character you're somewhat familiar with to learn the game, otherwise it becomes too daunting.

FWIW, I started out using Ken and then progressed to Remy (Guile-like character with faster charge times).
Playing against the CPU doesn't really prepare you for human competition since your mix-up games will not work against the CPU. That being said, are you going to be playing against humans either on XBox LIVE or offline in the arcades/home?

If you're going to be playing against humans, you're eventually going to have to get real comfortable with high/low/throw/etc. mixups.

I'd say your progression should go something like:
1.) Pick a character you're somewhat familiar with
2.) Learn any new special moves, normal moves.
3.) Get comfortable with UOH (mp+mk), throwing (jab+short), special character-specific overhead moves (moves that will hit a ducking character even if they block).
4.) Find out which normal moves easily combo into the Super Arts. And then find out which ones are hit-confirmable (that is, gives you time to react to a successful hit so that you can buffer into the Super Art).
5.) Get comfortable parrying easy stuff, like projectiles.

Finally, you work on your own kind of game plan, adding advanced stuff along the way if you wish or have the motivation to (Kara-throws, advanced juggles, crazier parrying and of course mindgames mindgames mindgames).

Only option I have is playing the computer. Don't know anybody that plays fighters. No arcades within hours (never seen anything other than original SF3), no Xbox.

I'll give Alex a shot, then. Thanks. I just don't think using a part 2 character is going to help learn how to play 3 right off.
