never played shadow hearts games before but you guys are making me kinda interested.

is shadow hearts 2's story really, really good? that's the primary drive for rpgs for me. also, what the settings(sh2)?

Based on those scans, i thought they're jumping to a more modern time, but it's only 1929! Still not WWII yet.

I can't remember the timeline for SHI/II, but is this taking place after those games, or in between?

Yea, I'd say the Shadow Hearts series is like the un-orthidox version of the FF series. Despite being a much smaller team with a much lower budget than Square, they pump out games that are pretty close to or on par for the FF series.
