Shaving neck causes razor burn/pimples/ingrown hairs. Best solution?

So, I have a beard trimmer for my face, but my neck I prefer to keep clean.

At present, I use disposable razors during a hot shower, shaving every 2-3 days. My neck generally breaks out 1-2 days after shaving, mostly pimples which leave red bumps, with occasional ingrown hairs.

Just wondering what the best way to combat this is. Ditching the disposable razors? Moisturiser? After shave? Just give up on having a close shave on my neck and using my beard trimmer on 0.5mm?
 
Best thing I ever did was get an electric razor. It's not a close shave as the normal blade, but for the past year I've never had those bumps that you're getting because of my change in shaving.
 
Shave every day would be my advice. I only get what you are describing if I don't shave for a couple days and my shirt collar rubs on my stubble.
 
I used to have the same problem, but then I bought a safety razor and now use something equivalent to Shea butter or a refined vegetable oil instead of shaving cream. I'll use soap in a pinch, but it is not preferred. Also shaving with the grain improved everything combined with the new razor and ditching shaving cream.

This or switch to this, keep in mind I suffer the same problems.

What kind? Like a $20 one from the supermarket or an expensive one from a specialty shaving store?

A little stubble is definitely preferable to a red neck.
 
If the op black or has curly hair then your best bet is to get an electric shaver and use Tend Skin aftershave.

yeah I've wanted to try these for a while now but haven't exactly had a need to other than to satisfy my curiosity.

I've tried the two top models from Braun (traditional) and Philips (rotary). The Philips didn't work at all for me. But the Braun Series 9 that I currently use is great. Virtually no skin irritation and a clean result. Not as good as a wet shave, but close.
 
Don't shave against the grain for one.
Make sure you use proper moisturizers after shaving.
Don't put so much force on the razor that you're basically biting down on the skin too, just enough to shave the hair. If you can't cut the hair with your current razor without putting a bunch of pressure on it then change razor since it's probably dull and pulling hairs more than actually cutting them.

Otherwise just get an electric.

I personally use a safety razor and FEATHERS as someone mentioned above.
Real nice, but I enjoy using the safety razor and it takes a try or two in order to do it proper.
 
I used to have the same problem until GAF recommended getting an Electric Razor a few months ago.

Since then, my neck has not had any ingrown problems or razor bump/pimples at all.

Delightful. The only aspect that may take some adjustment is needing to shave withing shorter intervals.

Before I shave I put conditioner on my face to make my skin softer and it's an extra lubricant. Makes using a blade much easier.

I hear the bevel system is overpriced but since it is now being sold in Target I might take the plunge this summer. I like the thought of having a "system" that tells me what to do at the start and end of shaving. And it being focused on black skin and hair is helpful.
 
Here are some things you can do.

1. Map the grain of your neck. Then only shave with-the-grain for 1 pass. If that leaves no irritation after a few times shaving, add an across-the-grain pass for a closer shave.

2. Reduce the number of blades per pass. Ideally just go get a safety razor so you only have 1 blade per pass. If safety razors aren't for you, go down to one of the 2 blade cartridge razors.

3. You should need almost no pressure if you are using a sharp blade. The weight of the razor is often enough.

4. Shave right after bath/shower. Use a good shaving soap or cream. Brands that can be found in the local drugstore or supermarket that are good are Cremo (recommended above) or maybe even Nivea sensitive skin.

Keep in mind certain hair and follicle characteristics may make it impossible to shave without some type of irritation. Black men often have a really difficult time for example.
 
Safety Razor with shaving soap out of a mug. I don't think I can ever go back. Once you get the hang of it nothing compares, and it has the benefit of being crazy cheap.
 
I've been wet shaving with classic, double edged safety razors for nearly eight years, and still got razor bumps on my neck until I started splashing cold water on my neck instead of warm/hot. Cold water apparently helps make the hair stand up. Use cold water and try to consciously shave a bit more gently and slowly than you do on your face. Should do the trick.

EDIT: I also only shave every other day. You should consider this if your hair is at all kinky/curly. If you're using a safety razor, you'll be left with a baby butt smooth face the day of your shave.
 
What i've learned is that you should use a scrub on your face and neck before shaving. I read somewhere the reason you're getting red bumps is because of dead skin cells clogging the pores. Or something like that.
I use a scrub before shaving, safety razor and then an after shave balm without alcohol.
Haven't had a problem since i started doing that.
 
I grow hair on my face/neck really fast, I normally shave everyday after a shower because of this and I deal with razor burn and bumps on my neck. I can't go a day without Tend Skin. I've tried witch hazel and other products but they never work.

I've been using Harry's products for awhile now without any problems. I use to shave with a safety razor but due to various reasons I stopped. I might go back for days I don't need to rush out the door.
 
Disposables are terrible. I switched to shave soap and a safety razor and never get any bumps. I shave against the grain too. It really depends on the hair type and person but it sounds like anything other than disposable razors will help your problem.
 
For me it only happens on razors with lots of blades, disposables with 1 or 2 blades are cheaper and do a better job anyways. I've been wanting to switch to a safety razor for a while now, maybe when I have some extra cash again.
 
Okay there is a very simple solution to this issue -- and many of the above may be correct as well -- but since I started using this method, I have never had ANY irritation on my face whatsoever. And the key?

Shave in the shower and use your basic hair conditioner as you would shaving cream with a good safety razor (Mach3 variants if you can spare the $ with fresh cartridges preferably). Make sure you've washed your face and soften your skin for about 5min before you do. Let me know your results, but as far as I'm concerned stuff like Barbasol, Gilette shaving gels are total scams.
 
Spend some money on some decent hair clippers. Your skin is irritated by razors. Mine is too. I've cut my own hair for the last 15 years and I never break out with clippers.

Yes, the same ones used for your head.
 
Make sure you are shaving with the grain on your neck. On my face the grain is down, but on my neck the grain is up and at a slight angle. When I shaved down on my neck it would always cause irritation but once I started shaving with the grain 95% of the issues cleared up.

Glad others have tried this! Been preaching it every thread. If money is an issue there are homemade recipes as well.

This followed by a bit of moisturizer ahas kept my formally heavily rashed/in grown hair neck and face basically completely free of them for years now.

Safety razors help a good bit but tendskin keeps me razor burn free even on the rare times I had to use crappy razors on vacation or something. So I put much higher stock in tendskins effectiveness then just changing to safety razors. Though the later is still recommended for numerous reasons like cost and quality of shave.
 
Abandon having a close shave with those disposable razors. I had the same problem and had to resort to using an electric shaver. Having a smooth face isn't worth the itchy bumps days later.
