Shining Force Neo: Does anyone out there care?

I'm glad to see this game get good reviews after the disaster that was Shining Tears. 1up just gave the US version a 9.0 a couple of days ago and it received decent reviews from the Japanese press. Who else out there is going to grab this along with the other 100 games coming out in the next few weeks? I was bored with Champions: Return to Arms and hopefully this will fulfil my ARPG fix.

Sadly, we're getting shafted on the box art, as usual:

I care a great deal but I'm waiting for alot more reviews to come out first. I'm starting to become very cautious of recent SEGA releases.

I haven't heard much about it other than its coming (always loved the series) and frankly I dont even know who the development team is.

Neither boxart is that good honestly. I was waiting on reviews after the abomination that was Shining Tears, glad to hear it sounds at least decent. I plan on picking this up sometime early next year, probably January/February, since the next two months have way too many games and not enough money and time.

The last Shining game I played was ages ago-Shining The Holy Ark. What's this one suppose to be like? Is it a first person dungeon dweller,or different? Do yu lead a party around, does it involve alot of stats to manage or is it simple hands leveling up stuff?

Finanally-did Sega actually have their teams work on this,or was it contracted out to some developer? I'm not even sure who worked on Shining the Holy Ark myself, but I liked it alot.

Isn't this Amusement Vision?

EDIT: Ahh, read the 1up review and found this:

"Developed by Record of Lodoss War veterans, Neverland"

2ND EDIT: Ahh, ok here's the deal, from IGN...

"This is an an original title under Amusement Vision's game producer Youichi Shimosato."

Yeah, why can't sega make a SRPG for god sakes!
Instead they create these lackluster ARPGs that nobody wants

WHY

edit:

Ok, so maybe this one is decent.. but still no excuse for no SRPG

It's fun if you like Diablo and the graphics are pretty with good music and lots of voice acting as well. It's not really my cup of tea, but its nice. Jackfrost liked it as well back when it came out in Japan.

So yeah, if your into the Diablo dungeon-hackers it's good stuff.

Shining Force I and II NEED a DS remake.

Shining Force III would probably take up too much room, what with it's three stories or whatnot.

They should port SFIII to PSP so the used game prices on them plummet like a rock (although for some reason pt.2 is really cheap)

How much does a UMD hold?
I forget.
"1.8 GB" was it?

Meaning 1.4 GB of actual usable space?

Certainly enough space for the 3 Shining Force games that were worthwhile.

Fuck, if Shining Force I-III were ont he PSP, I'd buy a PSP.
Do you hear that, Sony?

Ive been told by friends who played the import all the way through that the game is actually really fun.

I like the genre but am a bit annoyed they used the Shining Force name this way. I'll probably wait a bit before getting it.

Any news on a PAL release, there's nothing on Sega Europes site. We never got Shining Tears, but this does seem to be (slightly) higher profile release. At the very least it should be our reward for buying so much Sonic Heroes.

And there definitely needs to be some portable porting of Shining Force ahead of a next-gen SRPG Shining Force.

I care very much also. The Shining Force series has been my top favorite series of all time. So are there any more reviews out there? 9.0 from 1up is very promising.

wasn't there a shinning force game that came out that really sucked? like 2 or 3 months ago? It was 2d I think....

Shining Tears came out in March. It does suck.

I thought about buying it, but for the first time I listened to the reviews and didn't buy into a beloved series. Wasn't there another Shing series game to not only Tears?

Yeah, I really tried to like Shining Tears -- really -- but the shitty load times, awful scrolling, cumbersome interface, and sloppy combat hit detection ultimately killed it for me. Neo is lightyears beyond it.

There was a cell-phone game called Shining Force Chronicle, but I think it's Japan-only.. Shining Tears is the last Shining game to come out here.

OH WAIT. LOL. I had mistakened the last "Arc the Lad" game for one of the Shining series games :lol . I was worried it was this one, because I had heard people HATED it with a passion. Thats good then, because I don't know what to expect from this game and that usualy ends up beneficial. :D

Ah, the Shining Force SRPGs weren't THAT good. If you need an utterly mediocre and shallow SRPG to fill the void in your little nerd soul, pick up Stella Deus.

You kids and your crazy nostalgia. Gimme a first-rate Diablo clone over a second-rate SRPG any day, and fuck brand management.

Speaking of Stella Deus, why the hell didn't we get this box-art?

What we got is hideous and, even worse, almost indistinguishable from Shining Tears.

That Stella Deus box is pretty sweet, but ours wasn't horrible or anything (although I hated the alternate cover).

Huh? I'm not following.. you like our box, but hate the cover art?

Stella Deus' boxart is reversable.

Default:

Alternate:

Basically, he doesn't find the default to be horrible, but hates the alternate. :P

Follow developers, not properties.

Actually I'd say it's worth following both. Just like with films, it's always interesting to see a new team make an attempt at a streamlined franchise. Sometimes they mess it up, but sometimes they add things that the original team never could have done.

SFN has been confirmed by Sega for a PAL release, but it will probably be another 6 months... Quite lame, but it is coming over from what I understand.

Also, I love the the character art and the likes. Again, they have this wolf-character, although this one seems a little more sophisticater than Volg from Shining Tears hehe. Also, is SFN single-player only? I was happy with Shining Tears having a 2 player option, if SFN has it too, I'd be more than happy. I'd be ecstatic :D

With the game coming out of the hands of Neverland, I expected it to be nothing but class and finesse, and from what I can tell I wasn't wrong about that. ROLW on the DC was great too, hugely underrated though which was too bad. Nice review, and I will import this game.
