Shining Tears OPM demo

Brandon F

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
Umm...not really that horrible. I mean the hand drawn art and backdrops are very pretty, and the combat kinda works. Gives off this Secret of Mana vibe the way you charge your sword and utilize stick and move tactics.

Partner attacks are somewhat interesting for handling crowd control, and likely goofy fun to bait squads of foes into your massive icicle wall in 2P co-op. Enemy AI is like non-existant though.

Framerate wasn't really atrocious at all. Though movement has this weird frameskip effect going on.

What's with the demo timer though? The thing kicked me back to the OPM menu after like 2 minutes?

I just played it a couple times.. It's fun, looks neat and would probably be a blast in co-op

Yeaaaaaaaahhhhhhh three-minute timed demos are AWESOME. It's like having a store kiosk in my own home!

And yeah, it didn't seem as sluggish as reported, but the demo timed out before I could put it through any serious paces.

yeah the game's running around 30 fps and its pretty consistent, I've even let the screen fill up with monsters but it didsn't run in slow mo like some other people have said it did, it feels like Secret of Mana/Gauntlet and I know I won't be able to resist not buying this ^_^

The tavern place was pretty bad, but you move so slowly that it's not a big deal.. PLUS IT'S PRETTY

When I played it, it was basically Shining Soul II, but slightly slower. Not something I'd pay full price for, but interesting

I couldn't figure out the point of that tavern! Everyone and everything was completely static, and you couldn't interact or talk with any of the NPC's. Big WTF!

And yes, the art was real nice.

50 bucks? Jeez.

Perhaps the shock and disappointment of a 2D-looking game running at only 30 fps prompted the framerate complaints.

Yeah, I'm afraid that I strongly believe that pricing 2D games lower than their often heavily hyped and commercially popular 3D counterparts would only help to keep the graphic style afloat.

Then again, I'm negatively conditioned by Capcom's endless sprite rehashing.

I dunno.

$30 for a brand spanking new 2D console game sure would be tasty though. :)

I think it's more that during many battles the game slowsdown to a crawl that prompted framerate complaints.

But considering the lack of repulsion in this thread, maybe they fixed up the engine for the US release? Still wouldn't explain OPM's review saying it was 15fps unless they played a beta or something.

"Charge your sword and utilize stick and move tactics"? I must have been playing a different demo. :P

My character could hit 4-5+ enemies with a single swing, take them down in a single combo string (3 hits?), and they rarely ever got a single hit in. Never had to use the ally commands, the charge moves, items, anything... Don't know why you had to use "stick and move tactics" when running in and mashing O seems to have this whole "Win Button" effect.

I did like the Ally Lock-On (R1) option, but honestly, it didn't seem to help out much (as the AI handled things well enough). The charge attack (R2) seems much like FMA's, ultimately useless as it's hard to aim and takes your attention away from the battle.

And I agree about the enemy AI, they just stand around waiting for you to nudge them into action. I would have liked it better if they gave them a larger field of vision ala Drakengard or Dynasty Warriors, but alas...

I think it just seems shorter as the timer starts after the controller layout screen, and you're forced to sit through the ESRB logo, then skip the SEGA logo, the intro, the title screen, that long loading screen, then run through the tavern, pick an ally, and so on. By the time you're done with all that, you're left with maybe 2-3 minutes of play which is barely enough to clear a battlefield.

Thanks SEGA!

I agree, I got a serious Shining Soul I/II vibe from it, only this wasn't as good. :\

Hit the action button (O) to talk to them. Oddly, though, O isn't the accept button (unlike what the controller layout screen says), but instead X is... It's almost as if they made the demo while they were midway through westernizing the controls.

Yeah, all of the reviews so far have mentioned the slowdown (PSM, EGM, & OPM), so I guess we'll have to wait for the retail release to find out for sure if they fixed it up or not.

Yay!

I received the OPM today.

Shining Tears is clunky Shining Soul hotness. The decision making interface pissed Sea Manky off something fierce. :lol

I'll definitely buy it when it hits the magic $19.99.

It's fun for fans, but definitely won't stack up to the likes of Champions of Norrath or other current hack'n slash games.

Oh and FINNY THE MOTHERLOVIN' FISH?! I'm buying that immediately! Read: When I get money.

There's some mud in your eye God of War hype. Finny the Fish > God of War for "never before done" PR gaming experiences.

I'm a mosquito!

Now I'm a fish!

I need to get the dog game.

I also want a cat stealth game.

I was going to pick it up so I checked the previews over yonder at IGN.

Load times are a different story. In an age when game makers are striving to eliminate load times in their games, Shining Tears manages to take ten seconds to load up a few enemy sprites and static backgrounds. Everything about this game is slowed down by load times, whether it be moving from one section of town to another, or entering a shop.

If this holds true for the final game I'll probably pass. Don't have the patience.
